? We wouldn’t suggest you to take any other public transportation, since you would need to take 3 different means of transport. However, for the days that follow, one of the options is to take either the S. Sebastião metro stop, either the Sete Rios metro stop; and afterwards, getting the 58 bus, stopping at Rua de (Escola), the 3rd stop.

? The rooms of the residence have no towels or shower gel.

Rectory; the Senate room

International Sociological Association • Research Committee 51 on Sociocybernetics 5 / 16 NATIONAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE 5th International Conference of Sociocybernetics, SOCIAL KNOWLEDGE FOR THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD Lisbon, Portugal, July 26-31, 2004 ? From the Airport to the Rectory it takes 15 minutes by taxi.

? The Rectory building won the Valmor Architecture Prize in 2002. The project was conceived by two Portuguese architects: Manuel Aires Mateus and Francisco Aires Mateus.

? The building has 6 floors. The Senate Room, on the ground floor, was designed to seat from 70 to 90 people. This room is equipped with overhead projection, and offers the possibility for PowerPoint projection (beamer and computer), as well as one drawing board.

Weather in Portugal

Mostly sunny. Temperatures: by day - 27ºC (80ºF) to 30ºC (86ºF); by night - 15ºC (59ºF) to 23ºC (73ºF).

Meals

? Breakfasts at the residence (not included in the price of the room) are served there and are offered by the Organisation. Coffee breaks at the rectory are also free of charge. ? We have organised a catering service which includes the lunch that will be served in a special room at the university residence nearby the conference hall.

There are some restaurants close to the Campus, but it is not easy to find places for all the participants between 13.00 and 14.30, and it will be also difficult to get the meals there for all people within this period of time.

So, we suggest that the lunch to be served in the residence is the best solution, in order to guarantee the foreseen timings. We need, however, as soon as possible (before Wednesday, 21) the confirmation of the number of the participants who want to reserve their lunches from Monday, 26, to Friday, 30. Due to organising requisites we need to have all reservations made previously. The conference participants’ price is now 10 euros, since the organising committee has found more financial support to cover the costs.

International Sociological Association • Research Committee 51 on Sociocybernetics 6 / 16 NATIONAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE 5th International Conference of Sociocybernetics, SOCIAL KNOWLEDGE FOR THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD Lisbon, Portugal, July 26-31, 2004 This price includes: starters, main dish, dessert (fruit and cake), red and white Portuguese wines, water, juices and coffee.

Please confirm very urgently your reservation, in order that we can make all the necessary arrangements.

The ticket-meals for the five days will be available at the conference reception.

? The participants who are interested in reservations for dinner, from Monday to Friday, in a restaurant nearby, with a complete menu (including wines) for the special price of 12 Euros, should also confirm whether it is their wish to make this reservation. This price is only assured if we have 20 inscriptions ore more. For Monday, we need the confirmation before Friday, 30; for the following days, the reservations may be made one day in advance. Payment due directly to the restaurant.

Social program

25th July: Conference Dinner - Fado in Bairro Alto

Photo taken from http://www.paginasamarelas.pt/

Fado being a major tourist attraction as well as a cultural specificity, we suggest for the Sunday evening dinner / reception, a Fado restaurant located in the heart of Lisbon: ‘Adega Machado’. Lying in the ancient Lisbon quarter calle d Bairro Alto, the oldest Fado House in Lisboa (since 1937) offers some of the best specialities of Portuguese cooking.

(Cultural curiosity: Although its origins remain a mystery, it is known that Fado originated in sailor’s bars in Lisboa towards the end of the 18th century. The grief of those who watched their loved ones depart heading overseas could have been the starting point for this sentimental song genre. Its name comes from the Latin ‘fatum’, meaning fate. From the last quarter of the 19th century it was adopted by the aristocrats to express their romantic feelings using the words of great Portuguese poets and writers, and became linked to the word ‘saudade’ – a longing for home and familiar places.)

Open from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m, this restaurant seats 172 patrons.

Conference participants who are willing to go on this excursion will be driven by a rented bus from the rectory to the departure place.

The ‘Atanvá’ restaurant was designed with the main goal of showing the excellence of Portuguese meat. From traditional veal, to ‘porco preto’ (black pork), ‘mirandesa’ and ‘arouquesa’ meat, all of them have a controlled origin, and are cooked with the purpose of offering these dishes’ natural taste. As for starters and desserts, they are the result of the fine combinations of traditional original cookery. The cheese from Azeitão and the special wine also contribute to the wide variety and quality of this restaurant’s concept.

Open from 7:45 p.m. until 11:00 p.m., ‘Atanvá’ seats 160 patrons, and is very easily reachable.

Museu Naciionall do Azullejo

This museum is located in the former convent of Madre de Deus, founded in 1509 by Queen Leonor, widow of King João II and sister of King Manuel I. The building possesses noteworthy architectural spaces integrated in the visit route of the museum. The very old base of the collection covers a period between the 15th and beginning of the 19th centuries. It has been subsequently enriched with new pieces that allow the setting up of a route between archaic painted ceramic tiles (azulejos) from the second half of the 15th century and contemporary tile production.

During the months of June and July, on Wednesdays and Fridays, the museum closes at 8.00 p.m.

Museu Naciionall dos Coches

This museum was created by Queen Amélia de Orléans e Bragança, wife of King Carlos I, and is located in the building of the Royal Riding School of the Palace of Belém, later adapted to this use. Possessor of an unique collection of vehicles for ceremony and for travel from the 17th to 19th centuries, mostly from the Crown Assets or from the property of the Royal Family, the Museu Nacional dos Coches allows the visitor to understand the technical and artistic evolution of animal-pulled transport used by the European courts until the appearance of the automobile. In addition to the harnesses belonging to the vehicles, the collection also contains a significant collection of cavalry harness as well as uniforms for ceremonial and service uniforms for the coaches, a nucleus of armoury and 18th-century processional accessories.

International Sociological Association • Research Committee 51 on Sociocybernetics 12 / 16 NATIONAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE 5th International Conference of Sociocybernetics, SOCIAL KNOWLEDGE FOR THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD Lisbon, Portugal, July 26-31, 2004 Completing the collection are oil portraits of the monarchs of the Bragança dynasty, former owners of the coaches exhibited and a no less important collection of graphic works (prints, drawings, photographs) related to the collection or the history of the Museum. Vila Viçosa Collection: Open to the public since May 19, 1984, this annex of the Museu Nacional dos Coches is located in the former carriage barn and stables of the Paço Ducal of Vila Viçosa. It shelters a group of 73 vehicles from the 18th to 20th centuries.
