10 years have passed since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and subsequent collapse of the Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Although Aizu Wakamatsu did not experience the same level of damage as other areas, the city’s agriculture, tourism, and commerce industries all suffered from the harmful rumors that spread about radioactive contamination. Tourists stopped visiting the region, and our farmers struggled to sell their products. However, even as our residents were faced with difficult questions about what the future would hold, they joined together with support from around the nation to overcome these harmful rumors. In this special report, we look back on the disaster through photos taken at the time.
