  • Athletes Being Present Four Years Ago
2008 Irish Olympic Team Briefing Athletics Ireland Team Story so far After a disappointing Athens Olympics for athletics, there has been a changing of the guard with only five of the thirteen qualified athletes being present four years ago. There have been several standout performances in those four years such as Derval O’Rourke’s World indoor Championships Gold and silver in the European Championships in 2006. David Gillick has also won two European Indoor titles at 400m. The Irish Sports Council in conjunction with Athletics Ireland made timely interventions post European Championships which have proved very positive. The Irish Athletics team has improved year on year and had a successful World Championship in 2007 in Japan with eight athletes finishing in the top 16 of their respective events. Paul Hession is in very strong form after a double in the 100m & 200m in the Cork City Sports. Both Robert Heffernan and David Gillick have set new national records this season for the 20km Walk and the 400m respectively. Olive Loughnane is another athlete to watch after a personal best performance at the IAAF Race Walking Challenge finishing in 6 th place. Supporting the team All the athletes who will be representing Ireland in the Bird’s Nest stadium receive both financial and medical support from the Irish Sports Council. Derval O’Rourke is the only contracted athlete with eight athletes receiving World Class level funding. The remaining qualified athletes receive funding at International level. Athletics Ireland provides a High Performance programme funded by the Irish Sports Council and has 80 athletes in total with a support strategy that includes warm weather training camps, medical support and preparation for international competitions.

N NATIONAL SENIOR T&F MORTONCHAMPIONSHIPS STADIUM, SANTRY FRI EVENING 25th of JUNE 2021 SAT 26th & SUN 27th of JUNE 2021 ATHLETICSIRELAND.IE #IlhNatsT&F OFFICIAL PARTNER President’s Message On behalf of Athletics Ireland, I am delighted to welcome our athletes to Morton Stadium for the Irish Life Health 149th National Senior Track and Field Championships this weekend. Following the successful hosting of the 2020 Championships over four days, these Championships continue as the longest running National Senior Championships in the World which is something we all can be immensely proud of. This year we revert to one weekend but over three days commencing on Friday evening to complete the programme within the current Covid19 restrictions. Our Championships take place on the final weekend for qualification for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. It has been wonderful to see the excellent results obtained by our athletes competing both at home and abroad this year in difficult circumstances due to the pandemic. These performances have yielded National Records, Qualifying Standards and improved World Ranking positions. We wish everyone well who are seeking selec- tion as the qualification period closes and indeed to everyone competing this weekend. A large number of entries have been received and we are looking forward to a great Championships. Like 2020, these Championships are being held under the current Covid19 Government guidelines which unfortunately means that not everyone can attend due to the restriction on numbers. On Saturday the Cham- pionships has been selected as a trial event for the return of spectators and it will be great to see spectators albeit a relatively small number.

  • National Senior & U23 T&F Championships
N NATIONAL SENIOR & U23 T&F MORTONCHAMPIONSHIPS STADIUM, SANTRY SAT 22nd & SUN 23rd AUGUST 2020 SAT 29th & SUN 30TH AUGUST 2020 ATHLETICSIRELAND.IE #IlhNatsT&F OFFICIAL PARTNER President’s Message Visit irishlifehealth.ie The Athletic Association of Ireland Irish Life Health National Senior Track and Field Championships incorporat- ing the U23 Championships for 2020 is scheduled over two weekends to cater for our athletes and to comply with government guidelines. It was a crushing blow to hear that the number of people allowed at outdoor events was not increasing, none the less the Competition Chair John Cronin along with the competition team and committee have put a lot of thought into the schedule to deliver these championships. The Athletes have continued to train in the hope and expectation that they would have a championship to look forward too, therefore it was without question one of the goals of the Association to deliver on that expectation. There are 720 plus athletes who have entered the championships, the largest number of entrants for some years. The maximum of 200 people allowed at an outdoor event covering athletes, officials, stadium staff, first aid, etc. presented a big challenge to manage. It is regrettable that we cannot have the media, coaches and spec- tators with us, but as an association athletes are our first priority. Live streaming will be available on both weekends with RTE broad casting on the Sunday, it is an opportunity not to be missed to show our support to our athletes and our sport albeit from a distance. We are encouraged that our main sponsor Irish Life Health pledged their backing for our championships in these uncertain times, Liz Rowen Head of Marketing and Jim Dowdall Managing Director have once again placed their trust in us and we are as always extremely appreciative of their support.

Tailteann Schools Interprovincial Athletics Championships 1963–2020 Updated 6 February 2021 For corrections & additions please email [email protected] and [email protected] The Tailteann Schools Inter-Provincial Athletics Championships are the modern successor of the games which are part of the pre-Christian history of Ireland, predating the ancient Olympic Games, and now provide a keenly fought annual contest for schools’ Intermediate boys and girls (Under 17 on 1st September in the year of competition – a junior athlete may be selected for an event by a province) from Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster. These championships, referred to colloquially as the Tailteann Games, have themselves undergone an evolution to their current format since 1963. According to Lebor Gabála Érenn (The Book of Invasions), the Tailteann Games (Aonach Tailteann) were founded by Lugh Lámhfhada as a mourning ceremony for his mother Queen Tailte. Folklore dates the Games from 1600 BC, although other published sources claim they started as far back as 1829 BC. The ancient Aonach served three purposes – honouring the dead, proclaiming laws and providing sport and cultural festivities. They had a multi-sport format which included athletic events recognised today – running, high jump, long jump. The Games were held up until ca. 1170 AD, when they ceased due to the Norman invasion of Ireland. They were revived in medieval times as the Tailten Fair. In the modern era the first attempt to rekindle the Tailteann Games was mooted by the GAA shortly after its foundation in 188 4 with Michael Davitt championing the idea. The ill-fated American Invasion Tour of 1888 was intended to raise £5,000 for their revival but was a financial disaster – a loan of £450 was required to bring the touring party home.
