THE ART SCENE STORE ON CAMPUS 3pm to 6.30pm Sunday 7.30am to 6.30pm Mon - Thurs 7.30am to 2.00pm Friday

The art scene profile

The Art Scene was established in 1978 when its founder Mr Henry Malouf (a dedicated hobby artist) decided he could no longer remain retired at the early age of 50. With the help of his wife Evelyn and four children Paul, Julie, Kim and Greg who one by one gave up their careers to work in the business, they now have a thriving custom picture framing and art materials business.

Having been on the opposite side of the counter for some years he knew what he wanted as an artist, namely professional help in selecting the right picture frame to enhance and compliment his artwork and of course as is the case for most “struggling artists”, help in keeping the costs down. Through word of mouth a substantial portion of the professional and semi professional artists in New South Wales heard of this quality picture framer which not only could offer a fresh look to the way pictures were framed but halved framing costs which were a substantial portion of the cost of a painting.

Another innovation by Henry was to make The Art Scene a one stop shop for artists and in 1980 he introduced a full range of artist materials into the store (still in its present site today but expanding each year down the street) so that all the artists shopping needs from frames, paints, brushes and canvases could be done at the one time and in the one place. The Art Scene has substantially grown its mail order business and now sells wide with significant orders being exported to countries such as England, USA and Asia, as well as having three stores in NSW.

Patrick Carroll courting the muse and making a painting Medium: ACRYLIC Beginner - advanced Patrick Carroll subscribes to the philosophy that all great art is essentially an abstraction not an imitation. It is said that subjects find painters, painters do not find their subjects. It has also been said that the task of the painter is to show the viewer the ordinary in an extraordinary fashion. James Joyce once wrote that the ‘joy of the in- dividual is to grow into the person that they were always meant to be.’ So the painter is then challenged to cause the painting to develop and grow. This is done with the creative skill and true input from the heart, mind and soul of the artist - No FORMULAE AND NO SHORTCUTS. You only require a passionate heart, an open mind and a spiritually imbued soul together with some paints, paper and brushes. Confused? Let’s start painting..

“Patrick Carroll is an artist who does not shrink from subjects which present great complexity. In fact the more difficult the image the more energised in his approach and resolution. From the cluttered urban landscape of red roofs and narrow streets to the tangle of the Australian scrub he is able to distill its essence and grandeur and reflect it through confident brushstrokes and dramatic colours.” As quoted by Michael Pursche

DRAWING WITH EVERYTHING YOU CAN LAY YOUR HANDS ON! Medium: DRAWING beginners - advanced

An excitingly different drawing workshop! Using a wide range of drawing materials, students will be guided through class and individual demonstration by a tutor who is passionate about drawing. Join Joe in exploring the possibilities of various drawing media combined with the use of colour. Everything from the wandering, line of the humble biro to the varied, expressive marks produced by reed pens, dip pens, quills and charcoal (even cockatoo feathers!) will be used. Then comes the fun part: adding the sparkle of colour. Again a range of media for adding colour will be explored; watercolour wash, pencils and pastel. Joe as usual will spice up proceedings with tall tales, jokes and even some serious lessons on perspective. Be prepared to learn and have fun at the same time. Throughout the workshop students will be shown how to draw using different mediums through individual and class demonstrations.

Linda Weil PURELY PENCIL Medium: Mixed Drawing and Wash mediums all levels, some experience preferred but not required

Linda’s class is an exciting journey into the world of drawing with pencil and colour pencil. This is not a class in ‘copying’ a photo – but an exploration of drawing using nature as your subject and a pencil as your tool. In this workshop you will learn how to use and refine the techniques needed for rendering tones and textures of feathers, fur, scales or natural ‘found’ objects using only graphite and/or colour pencils. Starting with a new ‘mystery’ drawing, then working with found objects and photos, you will progress through various drawing techniques to create a finished drawing of your favourite animal (wild or domestic).Weather permitting, a morning of ‘urban drawing’ will be planned. With a wide and varied number of subjects to explore you will discover how to get the best from these mediums. An experienced art tutor, Linda will demonstrate all the techniques she uses in an easy to follow step by step approach; supported by one- on-one tuition and a comprehensive workbook you can take away with you. Some reference photos and still life materials are supplied, but students are encouraged to include their own photo references and ‘find’ their own objects. Her classes are quite structured, but allow great freedom for discovery of self-expression and joy through the wonder of the natural world. Be prepared for the unexpected, lots of fun and to take a few risks with your pencils! Linda Weil is a professional artist with over 40 years’ experience specialising in drawing Australian wildlife, botanical and nature studies. She has worked as a professional illustrator for national magazines as well as teaching and exhibiting her drawings in a variety of galleries and exhibitions throughout Australia. Her drawings have been featured in the 2016 and 2017 Australian Geographic Art calendar. Linda teaches regular drawing classes locally in Victoria and workshops interstate. A full resume, list of awards, as well as examples of her work can be viewed at: http://home.exetel.com.au/ lindaweilg sessions and workshops around Australia. http://home.exetel.com.au/lindaweil workshops 8 Drawing MIXED MEDIA Denis Clarke INTERPRETING TREES Medium: mixed media INTERMEDIATE - advanced

This new workshop from Denis revolves around capturing the structure, rhythm, texture and feel of tree forms and relaying these elements into lively spacial compositions in mixed media on quality paper. Initial exercises will include working from plant forms in the class in order to revise drawing principals and free mixed media techniques. As we progress we will work from specially chosen A4 photos of trees supplied by the teacher.[You may also like to bring your own reference photos or indeed work drawings]. You will be encouraged to observe the tree closely in order to interpret its dramatic potential for inspiring mark making. You will then create a main composition, series or triptych exploring abstract values such as , transparency, overlapping, colour, texture, negative space and movement. Demonstrations will be given in the use of charcoal, inks, pastel, wax resist, water colour etc to examine physical use of media. Expect to have fun learning how to free up with layering media, experimenting with accident and keeping an eye on underlying linear structure. Weather permitting some outdoor research will be encouraged from interesting trees. Denis Clarke is an established artist who has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally. His work is characterised by expressive use of colour, movement and intense drawing from everyday subjects. He lectures in drawing at several art schools and universities including the National Art School, Sydney. He is known for his innovative approach in linking observational drawing to creative and experimental methods with drawing and painting media. He is represented in public collections including The Art Gallery of NSW, Lloyds of London and has been the recipient of major awards including The NSW Travelling Art Scholarship and The Cite International des Arts Studio Paris. He is currently represented by The Stanley Street Gallery, Sydney. Lesley O’Shea DRAWN TO FACES Medium: DRAWING & MIXED MEDIA INTERMEDIATE - advanced

Play with a range of drawing and painting media to create portraits filled with expressive colour and movement. Starting with photos and other reference material, students will be shown how to develop a completed drawing which will tell a story about the subject of the portrait. Several smaller sketches will be done as a process of “thinking on paper”, to develop the study drawing. Working over broad washes of colour and on toned paper, students will use ink, pastel and charcoal to create portraits from photos. This course emphasizes the freedom of building on “happy” mistakes and reworking to create an interesting figurative work that engages the eye with textures, layers and ghosts of previous images. The course will cover some basic drawing and colour principles and is designed for the beginner who wants to have fun with col- our and texture and for the more experienced painter who wants to explore the freedom of enjoying making “mistakes”. Students will be working from their own photos or those provided by the tutor

Paul Margocsy The Wind Beneath My Wings Medium: Water BASED MEDIA intermediate - advanced

In this workshop I will endeavour to show you a totally new approach and technique to painting the wonders of wildlife. With the use of water based mediums I will show you how to not only paint feathers and fur but to paint attitude, character and a photo realistic approach to your subject. This will enable you to position your subject and paint the surrounding habitat and give it a photo realistic look. Your work will eventually resemble what you see when you look through a camera lens and you will achieve depth of field and a clarity of subject. Composition is the main attribute to any painting and I will give you guidelines how to achieve this. It’s a fun course and in the five days you will be amazed at what you will produce with this new process. This course is not daunting and from numerous workshops the students have been thrilled and uplifted with this new approach to wildlife art. The backgrounds and the props of wildlife art are important when you are painting realism and the airbrush technique used in the backgrounds will enhance your work. This course is enthralling, exciting and totally fulfilling……I will show you that painting nature can be fun. Paul was born in August in 1945 in . As a child he loved to draw but had no formal art training. After much research into ornithology and self-taught efforts he eventually won first prize in the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia. Paul was included in a book launch in 1990 featuring 70 of the best living traditional artists in Australia. Four years later he had his first book published on his art. Australia Post commissioned him in 1991 to do a water bird series of stamps and he was subsequently commissioned by the U.N. to do an endangered species series. Paul has had solo exhibition in London, Japan, 6 shows in America and 2 at Raffles Hotel in . He became the first Australian wildlife artist to exhibit in Hong Kong. His second book has just been released and his passion for painting is never ending.

WORKSHOPS 14 Watercolour Malcolm Beattie

WATERCOLOUR LOGIC MEDIUM: WATERCOLOUR INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED

Malcolm has a logical, no nonsense method of painting beautiful and vibrant watercolours full of mood, movement and light. Learn about washes, glazes, simplification, tonal balance and the value of painting with a limited palette. He has no secrets – he will share with you everything he knows, including his approach to choosing subject matter, composition and design, perspective and drawing for watercolour. Subject matter will be wide-ranging and varied – city streetscapes to rural landscapes, boats and water reflections, figures in the landscapes, skies, etc. He will also spend a day doing pen and wash – an exciting preamble to watercolour painting as well as a stimulating technique in its’ own right. Malcolm will demonstrate continuously and set tasks for participants. Critique, guidance and appraisal will be ongoing during the workshop.

Malcolm Beattie brings a modern, contemporary edge to his paintings, finding inspiration in the commonplace rather than the exotic - from inner city streetscapes to tranquil seascapes and beaches, ru- ral landscapes and everywhere in between. He thrives on the everyday hustle and bustle of the city streets, the beautiful treed avenues, the cast shadows from the tall buildings, colourful markets and the cafes which provide him with an endless source of inspiration and challenge. Malcolm’s work is represented in corporate and private collections both in Australia and overseas and is available through a number of Melbourne and regional galleries. He undertakes regular workshops and demonstrations for Art Societies throughout Australia and overseas, runs a school from his Melbourne studio.

Learn how to paint quick and expressive watercolours with fewer brush strokes. Working with large size brushes (sizes 12 or 16) adding shape against shape stroke by stroke and almost never going over same area twice and in the process, leaving large areas of paper untouched. Our aim will be to create atmosphere rather than strictly copy the subject matter by using a limited palette, oversimplifying shapes and avoiding adding too many details .To broaden our skills, we will learn how to paint people and animals. Starting with a very basic pencil sketch and later throughout the course, no pencil at all, painting directly with brush . This approach is fun, rather quick and gives painting that fresh and spontaneous look.

Tony Belobrajdic was born in Croatia in 1958. He stud- ied Architecture and Engineering in Croatia, moved to New York in 1987 where he was painting and group-ex- hibiting in water based mediums. Since 1988 he is living and working as a freelance Artist and Illustrator in Sydney Australia. Self taught artist spe- cialising in Watercolours but also working in other mediums. Tony travels and paints overseas regularly and teaches Watercolour classes and conducts Workshops for beginner to advanced level at several Sydney art Schools. In past few years he was awarded several first prizes for Watercolours. Watercolor is a magical and often challenging medium. Once mastered, it will reward you with the pleasure of creating striking works of art or infinite variety. During this week, I will set out to clear up widespread misconceptions about painting with watercolours. These common confusions hold watercolour artists back from achieving their full potential. The course will be full of practical advice and techniques. My aim is to simplify watercolour painting to assist you in your personal ad- venture with this wonderful medium. A wide range of topics including brush and water control, timing, perspective, figures, tones and colour mixing will be covered. Daily step-by-step demonstrations will allow us to cover and paint a number of subjects over the course of the week. Water, buildings, street scenes, figures, and Venice will all be tackled. It should be a lot of fun!

Joe has received over 90 awards for his work. Including the 2009 John Copes Watercolour Prize. He paints in a fluid and spontaneous manner. This allows him to capture the mood and atmosphere of his subject with a style that encourages the viewer to involve themselves with his work. He covers a wide range of subjects believing any concept can lead to an exciting work of art. He is always looking for an interesting viewpoint which he can bring to his audience allowing them to connect more closely to the world around them. He has published a highly successful book titled, “Mastering Watercolors – a practical guide.” Web - www.paintingwithwatercolors.com Alvaro Castagnet

IMPRESSIONIST APPROACH TO Watercolours MEDIUM: WATERCOLOUR Class is FULL BEGINNEr TO ADVANCED

Every day we will be conducting critique of the painting in progress. I walk among the students’ work, giving them friendly advice on how I think they could improve their work, to help them make the most of every painting opportunity. On the last day, it will be the final critique session, where every student will show the best painting they have produced, and will go home not only feeling great with their achievement, but realizing how much they have learned after having so much fun, and with a clear under- standing of the strength and weakness of their paintings.
