ACT Government AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY PUBLIC PLACE NAMES ACT 1989 INSTRUMENT NO. 267 OF 2000 Pursuant to section 4 of the Public Place Names Act 1989,1 determine the names of the public places that are Territory Land as specified in the attached Schedule and as indicated on the attached map. Dated the 21st day of July 2000. LINCOLN JAMES HA WKINS Delegate of the Minister Authorised by the ACT Parliamentary Counsel-also accessible at www.legislation.act.gov.au SCHEDULE STREET NOMENCLATURE Division of Gordon: Sportsmen and sportswomen NAME ORIGIN SIGNIFICANCE Clem Hill Street Clement Hill Test cricketer; career spanned 1896 to 1911-12; Formerly part Staunton (1877-1945) Australian Captain, 1910-11, against South Africa Street and also led Australia against England, 1911-12 Sawicki Place Elizabeth Sawicki Successful as a tournament bridge player, including Formerly (1950-1997) the 1997 Victorian Open Pairs. Selected in the Sawicki Street Australian Team for the 1997 Maccabiah Games in Israel, but died from medical complications following the bridge collapse during the Opening Ceremony. Staunton Place Robert Staunton Helped Australia gain recognition in world basketball. Formerly (1935-1990) Executive Director of the Australian Basketball Staunton Street Association for 20 years; made a Life Member of many clubs and sporting associations, including the Australian Basketball Federation and NSW Basketball Association. Van Praag Place Lionel Van Praag An Australian motor cyclist who won the official Formerly (1908 - 1987) World Speedway Championship in its inaugural year, Van Praag Circuit 1936. Reached the final in 1937, 1938 and 1939. An RAAF pilot in WW2 and was awarded the George Medal for heroic action when shot down in 1941. Resumed motor cycle racing after the war but retired in 1950. Sturrock Place Alexander (Jock) Represented Australia in yachting at four Olympics, New Name Stuart Sturrock winning bronze in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. (1915-1997) Became the inaugural Australian Yachtsman of the Year and also Australian of the Year in 1993.
