Step 1 Visit Paypal.com, click on the “Sign Up” button and select “Business Account.” A business account must have a unique e-mail address separate from your personal PayPal account. You will confirm your organization’s charitable status later in Step 5.

Step 2 Select your account type from the three available options (Payments Pro, Payments Standard, or Express Checkout). The Diocese currently uses a Payments Standard account, which has no monthly plan fee.

Step 3 Provide an e-mail address and password for your Business account. Follow the prompts to input information about your organization. Note: In addition to your organization’s EIN number, you may be required to input a SSN for the primary contact on the account per the US Patriot Act. You will then need to select how you’d like to process online payments/and or donations.

Step 4 Once you’ve provided all the required information to setup your account, look for an e-mail from PayPal that will ask you to confirm your e-mail address. You will also need to link a bank account. You can do this in two ways:

1. Provide your organization’s bank account and routing numbers. No login credentials for your online banking are required, so this option may be preferable for safeguarding your online bank account. Once you provide your account numbers, PayPal will make two small test deposits and withdrawals to your account to verify that the bank account is valid and active. Expect the tests deposits/withdrawals to be made within the next few days. You will simply need to confirm the deposit amounts to verify your bank account. 2. Provide PayPal with your organization’s online banking login credentials.

Step 5 Verify your charitable status as a 501(c)(3) organization by providing: 1) A document from the IRS with your organization’s full name and EIN number, 2) A copy of your organization’s bank statement or a voided check, and 3) A group tax exemption letter for the Episcopal Church that is available from the Diocesan Office. E-mail [email protected] to request a PDF copy of this group tax exemption letter. Once these documents are uploaded to PayPal, they are reviewed, and you will receive an email as soon as PayPal has verified your charity's status. Helpful Resources & Tips

The fixed portion of the fee (e.g. $0.30 for charitable organizations) is not refundable. o Partial Refund – PayPal credits a percentage of the variable transaction fee. o Refund to a donor who paid with American Express – No fixed fee is charged if the donor pays with AMEX, and the entire transaction fee is not refundable. • Note: A PayPal Business account that is a confirmed 501(c)(3) charitable organization is different from the PayPal Giving Fund. There is a greater lag with the PayPal Giving Fund from a donation being made to the money being deposited into your organization’s account. The Diocese is not currently enrolled in the PayPal Giving Fund.
