,*& :H*J^t « ttw/^ 'T THE ROAD NOT TAKEN by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-- I took the one less traveled by And that has made all the difference. rz*

Crossroads represent decisions we must face every day of our lives. Which one we will take presents a problem we must learn to solve. We have faced many problems in high school and have followed many differ ent roads. For many seniors this is the termination of their formal educa tion, and the trail stretches ahead.

We look backward and see the twisting road that brought us here. We look forward to a limitless future waiting for us around the next curve.

Gratefully we remember those who first tread M-F's hallways--they established her traditions and blazed the trail for us. Humbly we pick up our packs and walk purposefully onward. There is much that still must be done, and the road is beckoning.

FOREWORD DEDICATION

Mike Clark, Marion Franklin sophomore, died January 17, 1967.

His zest, enthusiasm, and eagerness to participate were qualities that won him the respect of his classmates.

To him, the 1967 Diabolis staff proudly and respectfully dedi cates this book. ADMINISTRATION

Our principal, Mr. Lower, has often been heard to say, "Our students can compete with any students. On competitive city-wide test, we score favorably; in interscholastic athletics, we win more than we lose; in music and dra matics, our plays and operettas are superior.

His pride in the school is emphasized in each word and phrase. Under his positive leadership, our school has progressed and improved this year as it has in all of the years he has served as our principal.

The door to the office of Miss Jane Reamer, our vice-president, is always open, She will ingly helps students and teachers in all phases of the total school program.

II iiRiir UHfiflK NON-PROFESSIONAL PERSONNEL f ' ' Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Schoonover, and Mrs. Lilley capably handled the office chores. Their duties ranged from preparing intri cate reports to repairing broken staplers. They not only assisted administrators and teachers, but were of help to students whenever called upon.

i

Mr. Harper, and Mr. Rymer were the men responsible for keeping our building I' , clean. Mr. Harper's sense of humor and Ernie Rymer's ready jokes were a constant boost to the morale of teachers and stu dents.

Mrs. Bagent's kitchen crew once again provided the students each day with tasty, nourishing lunch. The bake-goods provided as extras were real favorites.

SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS

The senior class officers are nominated in homerooms. After a vigorous campaign by the nominees, they are voted on by their entire class. The students having the majority of the votes then become the officers. Michael Huntley, our president, leads the class in all activities. He is assisted in his work by the vice-president, Gary Johnson; sec retary, Susan Thomas, treasurer, Charles Halsey; and chaplain, Mary VanHoose. This year they are planning a Senior Assembly, a Senior Party, MICHAEL ROBIN HUNTLEY a Senior Prom, and many other activities. "Clem" It promises much for all of our seniors. ti M t GETTYSBURG TRIP - A JUNIOR TRADITION

In April, 1964, Mr. Holderle took thirty-five students by bus to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to view the Civil War Battlefield where a government American drama unveiled. Since that time 220 Marion-Franklin students have made the trek across half of two states to view the historic shrine. Each year the number of juniors desiring to go increases. The Gettysburg Trip has become a Marion-Franklin tradition. Five and ten year reunions of the students who have made the trip has been planned. Mr. Holderle's trips have received tele vision coverage. SOPHOMORES

STUDENT COUNCIL

The Student Council sponsored Shoe Fund netted a gross donation from the Students of Marion-Frank lin High School of $420.76. That total represented the highest contribution given by any school in the Columbus system. This leadership demonstrated by the Council under the capable guidance of Pat Dani son is indicative of their influence this year. The Student Court, an organization that handled minor student infractions, was another successful project of Student Council. Ellen Sells, vice-president; Eddie Reeves, treas urer; Pam Spotts, secretary; and Jackie Small; chaplain were the officers who assisted Pat in mak ing the Student Council a success.

76 BOY'S AND GIRLS STATE

Three students from Marion-Franklin attended Boy's State and Girl's State last June. Dana Zart man and Gary Johnson attended Boy's State at Ohio University in Athens. Girl's State was held at Capi tal University here in Columbus where Carol Edger attended. Gary, a member of the Federalist party, was elected to a civil service commission. Dana as a member of the Nationalist party was elected to city council. Carol, elected County Coroner, ran on the Federalist ticket. The purpose of Girl's and Boy's State as related by these students, is, to give the youth of Ohio some experience and knowledge on how government operates.

The Girl's Athletic Association was active in many fields this year. Besides participating in sports, they sponsored a collection of baskets for needy families in the school community. These baskets contained can goods brought in by the student body.

One of the sports G.A.A. com peted in again this year was volleyball. The girls had to try out for the team and attend practices.

Y-TEENS The Y-Teens was a very active club this year. Along with other Y-Teens from other schools they planned the International Fair which was held at the YWCA on March 4. Another joint activity of the Y-Teens was a city-wide dance held at Vets Memorial.

« "\

The annual Backwoodsman's Ball, sponsored by the Y-Teens, was held March 10. This year's theme was Barefoot Ball. The dance was, as usual, one of the biggest events of the year. Per haps the reason for this is that it is a girl-ask-boy affair. The kids came dressed as hillbillies and there was the traditional square- dancing. Lt-B. 83 The bookstore is an invaluable aid to the students and teachers. Paper, Pencils, pens,, workbooks, and other school supplies can be purchased here. The bookstore assistants are Debbie Bagent, Nina Lee, Sheila Garten, and Sharon Bishop.

The treasurer's office is the center of all financial activities at Marion-Franklin. Mrs. Lewis and her assistants Linda Swain, Mary VanHoose, and Barbara Bullock write receipts, type up checks, and go to the bank. The purpose of the Future Business Leaders of America is to make these stu dents familiar with the business world. Under the guidance of Mrs. Petit the members visited business firms.

86 The Projector Club is a most important group. This organiza tion, under the supervision of Mr. Fritz, is in charge of all the noon movies shown here at school. The members both charge admis sion and set up the movies. The boys are.instructed on the proper way to operate a projector of any type. They often assist teachers in showing films or film strips in classrooms. The club is indeed an import ant asset to Marion-Franklin.

87 •a This school year proved to be highly successful for the Art Club. Doug Gardine received a third place award in a state-wide poster contest promoting conservation in Ohio, a project under the auspices of Governor Rhodes. Art Club members receiving local recognition through the community newspaper for some of their outstanding work were Mike Liscano, club president, Velam Ludaway, Doug Gardine, Rick French, Tyrone Rakes, Walter Rakes and Albert Sherrill. Marion Franklin artists achieved recognition from the Southside YMCA for which their work was displayed throughout the community. This group consisted of Doug Gardine, Mike Walden, Albert Sherrill, Velma Ludaway, Mike Bond, and Mike Liscano. A sculpture by Velma Ludaway and a painting by Mike Liscano were exhibited at Battelle Memorial Institute. Designing paper mache jewelry, visiting art galleries such as the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, the Fine Arts Gallery at Ohio State University, and the Cleveland Institute of Art were trips undertaken by this active club. Representatives from the Columbus School of Art and Design and the Cleveland Institute of Art were guest speakers who gave the members an opportunity to gain a perspective of the offerings of an art school to the promising artists.

89 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS

The Varsity Cheerleaders this year were Kathy Deibert, captain; Carolyn Todd, Vickie Bennett, Karen Graves, and Nancy Gilson. These girls cheered the Red Devils on through both victory and defeat. Many times they stayed after school painting signs, making hoops, and planning pep assemblies. Through these pep assemblies they introduced new cheers to encourage support from students.

The Future Teachers of America is an organiza tion at Marion-Franklin for those students interested in teaching as a career. This year as its main pro ject, the club has undertaken the creation of a coat-of-arms which will become a permanent part of Marion-Franklin tradition. Among the activities the members perform while at school are assisting teachers in grading papers, and teaching classes in different elementary schools. This year, the members participated in a pro gram to learn more about the teaching profession. In April, they observed and taught classes for two weeks. This was the final project for the year. The highlight of the Hi-Y every year is the City Hi-Y Day. This function serves as a further step in experiencing the boys in student government. The club, in union with other Hi-Y's, also presented a bill to the Ohio Legis lature. This year for the first time the club participated in a basketball league made up of the Hi-Y's from the south-end schools. Hi-Y ended their season with a 4-1 record.

The 1967 Hi-Y officers are Ken Bennett, treasurer; Ray Mourning, chaplain; Gary Johnson, president; Pat Danison, vice-president; and Charles Halsey, secretary. The high-stepping Marionettes added variety and spirit to our half-time entertainment. Under the direction of Mr. Robert Reither they never failed to perform during half-time shows. Marion Franklin is indeed privileged to have a group such as this.

Marion-Franklin had a very active Spanish Club this year. Under the leader ship of their advisor, Mrs. Jackson, the members of the club learned more about Spanish traditions and culture. The club sponsored a piriata party and a candy sale as two of their projects. Mike Warner, vice-president; Joellen Rorie, secretary; Susie Bell, treasurer; Debbie Richards, program chairman; and Mimi Michel, student advisor, assisted president Marilyn Wilson in making the Spanish Club a success.

102 The Camera Club is a small but im portant club. These boys under the super vision of Mr. Lowery often assist teachers by taking pictures for them. The presi dent, Mike Custer, took many of the pic tures for the yearbook. The members know how to photograph correctly and to develop and print pictures the proper way.

"The 1966-67 Wrestling team showed much improvement", said Coach Dick Mileff. In its third year at Marion, wrestling appears to be grow ing rapidly in popularity. Red Devil matmen boast a 3-2-1 record in dual meets, the best since the sport started at Marion. Charles Forrest lead wrestlers with a 8-1 record in the 103 pound weight class. Three year lettermen Q M were Jim Humphrey, Bill Hopson, and Robert Parker.

TENNIS TEAM LOOKS FOR IMPROVEMENT

With one season under their belt, the outlook for the 1967 Tennis team appears to be brighter than it was prior to the opening of the season one year ago. Coach Wil fred Hupp with four returning lettermen is confident of a winning season. Last year, Marion's racketmen tailed to cope a victory although several of their performers did win individual matches. Mr. Hupp stated that the number of sophomores out for the team was indictive of increased interest in the sport. He also was pleased with the sophomore turnout because he feels that more wins will certainly ensue in the not too distant future. The four returning lettermen from last season are Ken Bennett, Jim Humphrey, Alan Dixon, and Harold Lloyd. On last years team, Ken Bennett was the number two player in singles competition. Humphrey and Dixon combined to form the number two team in doubles play. Harold Lloyd also received valuable experience last year play ing in the number three singles slot.
