  • The Dissemination and Localization of Anime in China: Case Study on the Chinese Mobile Video Game Onmyoji
The dissemination and localization of anime in China: Case study on the Chinese mobile video game Onmyoji Wuqian Qian The Department of Asian, Middle Eastern and Turkish Studies Master Program in Asian Studies, 120 hp Autumn term 2016 Supervisor: Jaqueline Berndt English title: Professor Abstract In the 2017 Chinese Gaming Industry Report, a new type of video games called 二次 元 game is noted as a growing force in the game industry. Onmyoji is one of those games produced by Netease and highly popular with over 200 million registered players in China alone. 二次元 games are characterized by Japanese-language dubbing and anime style in character design. However, Onmyoji uses also Japanese folklore, which raises two questions: one is why Netease chose to make such a 二次元 game, the other why a Chinese game using Japanese folklore is so popular among Chinese players. The attractiveness of an exotic culture may help to explain the latter, but it does not work for the first. Thus, this thesis implements a media studies perspective in order to substantiate its hypothesis that it is the dissemination of anime in China that has made Onmyoji possible and successful. Unlike critics who regard anime as an imported product from Japan which is different from domestic Chinese animation and impairs its development, this study pays attention to the interrelation between media platforms and viewer (or user) demographics, and it explores the positive influence of Japanese anime on the Chinese creative industry, implying the feasibility of anime or 二次元 products to be created in other countries than Japan.

  • BUILDING YI (M)OTHER TONGUE: VIRTUAL PLATFORMS, LANGUAGE MAINTENANCE and CULTURAL AWARENESS in a CHINESE MINORITY CONTEXT Olivia
First published in Sustaining Indigenous Knowledge: Learning Tools and Community Initiatives for Preserving Endangered Languages and Local Cultural Heritage, edited by Erich Kasten and Tjeerd de Graaf 2013, 219–248. Fürstenberg/Havel: Kulturstiftung Sibirien. — Electronic edition BUILDING YI (M)OTHER TONGUE: VIRTUAL PLATFORMS, LANGUAGE MAINTENANCE 12 AND CULTURAL AWARENESS IN A CHINESE MINORITY CONTEXT Olivia Kraef Introduction In this chapter I discuss current developments regarding language loss and corre- sponding language revival activities among the Yi (Nuosu) of China. The so-called Yi ethnic minority ranks sixth in size among the officially recognized 55 ethnic minori- ties of the People’s Republic of China (MOFCOM 2009). The Yi are an extremely heterogeneous group consisting of different branches or tribes which are distributed in China’s southwestern provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Guangxi. Yi cultural and linguistic heterogeneity, paired with the lack of a unifying, vibrant reli- gious-linguistic culture, such as Tibetan Buddhism or Islam in China, co-determine a process of acculturation and language switch/loss, which has been increasingly evi- dent with the Nuosu subgroup in semi-urban and urban, as well as in semi-rural contexts. The new Constitution of the People’s Republic of China in 1982 granted ethnic minorities far-reaching legal, political and cultural autonomy. It also signified for the Yi an incentive to re-assess issues of language reform and education, whose founda- tion had been laid in the 1950s, and which had come to a forced standstill during the ten turbulent years of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). Nevertheless, the lan- guages of the Yi, like those of other ethnic minorities in China, are in a state of crisis.

From 1980 flat organization is widely applied in western countries, but very slow speed in China. Even the new director of China SASAC ①, Mr. Xiao Yaqing, addressed on March 2016 during the national congress meeting, which China state owned enterprises has much more management levels compare with foreign company or private company, this fact will significantly impact on their competitiveness.
