Ryun Ferrell Head coach Ryun Ferrell was named the Central head men’s and women’s tennis coach in 2014. Central’s men team has finished in the top-three of the Iowa Conference twice in Ferrell’s three-year tenure. The Dutch have advanced to the conference tournament semifinals all three times. At the 2016 Iowa Conference individual champion- ships, his athletes won two flighted brackets, giving Central its first titles at the event in 12 years. In Ferrell’s second season (2015), the Central women won five of seven league matches to finish third in the confer- ence standings for the program’s best finish since 2008-09. His 2017 squad matched that season with another third-place finish. Midway through his fourth season with the team, the Dutch women have racked up over 40 dual victories under his leadership. Dutch women’s tennis players have earned a total of 13 all-Iowa Conference honors under his tutelage, while the men’s players have acquired eight honors. Ferrell was the women’s tennis coach at Drake from 1999-2006 and served as the women’s coach at Northern Illinois from 2006-14. Under Ferrell, Drake captured the Missouri Valley crown and an NCAA tourney berth in 2000, and a share of the league title in 2005. He posted an 81-76 dual meet record, including a 51-19 (.728) mark in conference matches. Seven Drake

IV Men’s tennis players earned all-league recognition during his tenure. He also served as a teaching professional at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club as well as the Wakonda Club. At Northern Illinois, Ferrell faced a rebuilding job. His teams posted a 57-104 (.354) record in eight seasons, giving him an overall mark of 138-180 over 15 years. But his squad posted a 14-10 mark in 2012-13, the Huskies’ highest win total in 16 years. A graduate of Baker University (Kan.), where he was a member of two conference championship squads, Ferrell earned a master’s degree at Wichita State University (Kan.). He spent 1995-96 as a volunteer assistant at the University of Kansas before gaining Division III experience in 1996-97 as assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at the College of New Jersey, where he helped the squad take a New Jersey Athletic Conference title. He was also a teaching professional at the Princeton Racquet Club. He was an assistant at Wichita State University from 1997-99 and taught at the Wichita Racquet Club.

Peter Greteman Assistant coach Peter Greteman joined the Central tennis staff as an assistant coach in the summer of 2016. Greteman graduated from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2013 after a four-year career with the Mavericks, serving as a team captain during his senior year. Primarily a doubles player, he achieved a 5-9 doubles record as a junior including a 4-6 mark at the No. 1 spot. Prior to coming to Central, Greteman was an accountant with CFO Systems in Omaha from 2013-16. He previously was a tennis instructor for the City of Omaha at the Hanscom Tennis Center from 2011-13 while in college. 2017 spring season results 10-14 overall, 6-2 conference Date Opponent Location Result Feb. 5 Grinnell Grinnell L, 9-0 Truman State (Mo.) Coach: Ryun Ferrell (fourth year) Assistant: Peter Greteman Outlook More depth, more experience.

It’s the most promising roster in Ryun Ferrell’s four seasons as Central College men’s tennis coach, he said. And while he’s less sure that means an improvement on last year’s third-place Iowa Conference finish, he’s confident the Dutch are itching to give it a shot.

“More than any other year since I’ve been here, we have options, which is exciting,” Ferrell said. “Now we have to figure out who is our best option to play at what spot.”

Which means the immediate challenge is picking a lineup. Five of last year’s top six players are back, and some skilled newcom- ers arrived ready to challenge them.

It starts with veteran leadership and the Dutch have six seniors, including two at the top. Seniors Garret Taylor and Jacob Logan have already served as co-captains for two seasons and survived a challenging year at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Taylor was 6-15 while Logan was 7-17. Ferrell thinks that experience will yield more favorable results and doesn’t anticipate making any changes at those positions.

“I’ve already said that to the team,” Ferrell said. “They struggled last year, but it seems like every team you go up against has a good No. 1 and 2 player, and these two guys always had hard work. They’ve earned their positions. They’re more prepared now.”

Taylor was a first-team all-conference singles honoree in 2016 and received honorable mention last year as well as the team MVP.

No. 3 singles is less clear. “ From three on down it’s wide open,” Ferrell said.

Senior Tom Palmer gets an early look after finishing last spring at No. 4 with a 9-6 mark. Senior CJ Cliff was 13-12 last year, including an 8-4 record at No. 5 singles while primarily at No. 5. Senior Scott Wilson was 11-9, with a 9-4 mark at No. 6.

But they’ll have to battle junior Colin Jones, sophomore Kris Weeden and junior Jackson Lewton, who all saw action last year as well. And freshmen William Isiminger of North Aurora, Illinois, Ethan St. John of Crystal Lake, Illinois and David Boschma of

Men’s tennis XXXI Olathe, Kansas appear capable of making an instant impact. Isiminger was 4-3 in the abbreviated fall season while St. John was 3-1.

“I’ll always go with veterans in the beginning,” Ferrell said. “They’ve earned that right. But if someone can show me they have the ability to win right away, there’s always potential for those young bucks to play.”

Ferrell is understandably a fan of his seniors.

“They are guys I inherited as freshmen in my first year and really got the program going,” he said. “We wouldn’t have taken third in the conference last year without them. They’re older and smarter now. It’s tough to beat a senior. They know how to win and they know how to lose. Once you have those lessons down, it makes you a tougher player. Veteran leadership is always neces- sary.”

There’s even more uncertainty in doubles, but only about the lineup, not about its strength.

“Doubles are where you really need options and we’ve got that,” Ferrell said. “That’s why I’m excited.”

Senior Jimmy Cunningham and juniors Danny Anderson Josh Phillips will likely contribute in doubles, in addition to the others. Cunningham earned first-team all-conference doubles recognition in 2016.

Central’s 10-14 dual record last spring is a bit deceiving due to Ferrell’s affinity for splitting the squad for multiple non-conference matches. That makes team wins more elusive but provides varsity experience to more players, many playing at higher positions than usual.

“It will help us be one of the deepest teams in the conference,” he said. “The kids play at higher spots than what we do in the league.”

Central was 6-2 in conference play last year but even with a more talented lineup, climbing just one more spot in the standings is a big leap. The Dutch have finished third or fourth 12 times in 13 years but haven’t placed second or higher since 2004. Coe and Luther have emerged as the league’s two-headed monster, with one or the other claiming every title since Central’s most recent crown in 2000. Coe’s won the last six championships and is poised for another, Ferrell said.

“Coe has the best team they’ve had in the past five or six years,” he said.

Ferrell said Luther also has a talent advantage, but said his players need to overcome a psychological hurdle as well.

“We get up 40-love and we still struggle sometimes,” he said. “We’ve got to learn how to seal the deal.”

Meanwhile, Dubuque has an influx of new players and could make a push towards the top, Ferrell warned, and Wartburg remains a rival.

Central, which was 1-0 in the fall, opens its spring schedule January 27 in Des Moines against Grand View University and in Rochester, Minnesota against Bethel University, the first in a string of formidable non-conference foes.

“We’ve got some good talent we’re going up against,” Ferrell said. “It will be good for us. We need to play a lot.”

The Dutch got some extra court time in the preseason, journeying to the college’s study center in Merida, Mexico for the Augusto Lugo Invitational Jan. 9. While scheduled as a cross-cultural opportunity, the event has on-court advantages as well.

“They play the game a different way there,” Ferrell said. “It’s exciting for the kids to see that.”

The tourney was named for a former Central all-America honoree and organized by Patricio Espinosa, who was the Iowa Conference MVP in 1978. Espinosa and Lugo were part of a Dutch dynasty which produced 11 consecutive conference champi- onships from 1977-87. Ferrell values the connection and said it benefits the current players.

“If you understand the program history, you understand how far you can go,” Ferrell said.

It’s a lesson he hopes pays off this spring.
