2018 MEN’S TENNIS CENTRAL COLLEGE MEDIA GUIDE Founded —1853 Enrollment — 1,400 Affiliation — Reformed Church in America President — Dr. Mark Putnam Membership — Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division III Founded in 1853, Central College of Pella, Iowa, is a private, residential four-year liberal arts college known for its academic rigor and strength in global experiential learning, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), sustainability education, athletics success and tradition, and leadership and service. Central continues to value its long- standing relationship with the Reformed Church in America that began in 1916. The college participates in NCAA Division III athletics and is a member of the Iowa Conference. Central is an active part of the Greater Des Moines region and just two minutes from Lake Red Rock, Iowa’s largest lake. Central is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division III, and the lowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Men compete in baseball, football, basketball, tennis, golf, wrestling, soccer, track and cross country, while women compete in tennis, golf, track, softball, volleyball, cross country, soccer and basketball. Rugby is offered at the club level. The A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex The A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex is located at the corner of Independence Street and West Fifth Street in southwest Pella. The complex includes P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium (1970), H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse (1987), Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium (1977), the baseball and softball fields (1978), Ryerson Golf Practice Range (2005), tennis courts (1992), soc- cer field (2005) and the Ron Schipper Fitness Center (1999). The complex also includes practice and intramural softball diamonds and football fields. Golf meets are held at the Bos Landen Golf Club, two miles southwest of the campus on Highway T-15. Central’s men team has finished in the top-three of the Iowa Conference twice in Ferrell’s three-year tenure. The Dutch have advanced to the conference tournament semifinals all three times. At the 2016 Iowa Conference individual champion- ships, his athletes won two flighted brackets, giving Central its first titles at the event in 12 years. In Ferrell’s second season (2015), the Central women won five of seven league matches to finish third in the confer- ence standings for the program’s best finish since 2008-09. His 2017 squad matched that season with another third-place finish. Midway through his fourth season with the team, the Dutch women have racked up over 40 dual victories under his leadership. Dutch women’s tennis players have earned a total of 13 all-Iowa Conference honors under his tutelage, while the men’s players have acquired eight honors. Ferrell was the women’s tennis coach at Drake from 1999-2006 and served as the women’s coach at Northern Illinois from 2006-14. Under Ferrell, Drake captured the Missouri Valley crown and an NCAA tourney berth in 2000, and a share of the league title in 2005. He posted an 81-76 dual meet record, including a 51-19 (.728) mark in conference matches. Seven Drake IV Men’s tennis players earned all-league recognition during his tenure. He also served as a teaching professional at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club as well as the Wakonda Club. At Northern Illinois, Ferrell faced a rebuilding job. His teams posted a 57-104 (.354) record in eight seasons, giving him an overall mark of 138-180 over 15 years. But his squad posted a 14-10 mark in 2012-13, the Huskies’ highest win total in 16 years. A graduate of Baker University (Kan.), where he was a member of two conference championship squads, Ferrell earned a master’s degree at Wichita State University (Kan.). He spent 1995-96 as a volunteer assistant at the University of Kansas before gaining Division III experience in 1996-97 as assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at the College of New Jersey, where he helped the squad take a New Jersey Athletic Conference title.
