Do you know that sleep deprivation according to some reports can have the same effect as being under the influence of alcohol? Do you know that insufficient sleep born needlessly each year affects the secretion of leptin, a “satiety” hormone, which is linked to obesity? As the amount of hormone secretion decreases, the chance of weight gain increases. Do you know that research has shown that insufficient sleep impairs the body’s ability to use insulin which can lead to the onset of diabetes? Do you know that according to the National Sleep Foundation sleep deprivation and its effect on work performance may be costing US employers some $ 18 billion each year in lost productivity? Sleep is a necessity, not a luxury. We cannot “cheat” on the amount of sleep we get as sleep deprivation adds up over time, an hour less per night is like a full night without sleep. However, the good news is that most cases of sleeping disorders can be cured with lifestyle changes you can make on your own, without relying on sleep specialists or turning to prescription or over-the-counter sleeping pills. Try the following simple changes to your daytime and pre-bedtime routine: *Avoid stimulants such s caffeine, nicotine and alcohol too close to bedtime. While alcohol is well known to speed the onset of sleep, it disrupts sleep in the second half as the body starts to metabolise the alcohol, causing arousal. *Keep a regular sleep schedule, going to sleep and getting up at he same time every day, including the weekends.
