I am a 10-year Captiva homeowner. We, as probably did 90 percent of the property owners, chose Captiva because of its unique, rustic surroundings. We want to preserve the beauty, the green and the quiet. These features are attractions that make all our island pro- perty valuable. Destroying them by unneeded and unwanted com- mercial projects does not make good common sense. The motivation may be profit, but eliminating the features that make the property valuable is a self- defeating contradiction. There is limited access. We already have major bridge and traffic problems. We also have an adequate number of shops, stores and vendors who would suffer from overbuilding stores and congestion from office (?) or motel traffic. A residential haven such as Captiva Island is an ir- replaceable asset that Lee County and the state would be wise to sustain. It would increase the tax value for the county and asset value for property owners to rezone all available land and property "residential." Tuesday, July 11,1989 Recreation 5B Just rolling along Former logroller Baer pursues different career as recreation director

By Rick Fowler Islander staff writer

Prior to the arrival of Jean Baer in April of 1988 it is doubtful that anyone had ever logrolled in island waters. Baer is the director of recreation at South Seas Plan- tation. She grew up in Eau Claire, Wis. and graduated with a degree in recreation from the University of Wisconsin at Lacrosse. While in high school she work- ed for the local parks and recreation department where she was first introduced to the sport of logroll- ing. While in college she began teaching logrolling for the YWCA. Logrolling began as a practical matter at logging sites around the world as a means to contend with log- jams. Logjams are tangles of jogs which prevent the logs from moving through waterways on their way to milling sites. Loggers would walk, or roll, on the logs while using long poles to push logs and break up the jam. The task is an extremely dangerous one. If the log- gers should fall, they could be crushed by the move- ment of the logs or become trapped below the surface by the mass of logs. Clearly a unique sense of balance is an essential requirement for the job. The sport of logrolling emerged from its practical application. Loggers would, for recreation, test their skills against each other. Contests included seeing who could stay up on a moving log the longest, and who could stay on the log while knocking another log- ger off. Eventually regional, national and even world competitions developed in the new sport. The World Lumberjack Championships have been held annually for the past 30 years in Hayward, Wis. Each July, loggers from places as far away as New Zealand and Australia converge on Hayward. In 1984, Baer competed in the Wide World of Spocts televised women's division competition. After capturing a third place finish Baer, decided to "hang-up her spikes," at Baer shows her logrolling technique ..
