Throughout the years, I continued to face and overcome numerous other health impairments to survive. I am now facing yet another major obstacle. The kidney function in my good kidney has deteriorated greatly. Soon I will be at the point where my treatment options will be limited to dialysis or a kidney transplant! Dialysis would help my kidney do it’s job, but it is very time consuming and would limit my activities. A transplant would be the best option-but the wait for a kidney from a deceased donor is over 5 years, and there are over 100,000 people on that waiting list! The other option is finding a living donor- someone who is willing to give me one of their kidneys. Since most people can live long, healthy lives with one kidney, this option would be best for me. Kidneys from living donors work faster once transplanted; Kidneys from living donors usually last longer than kidneys from deceased donors; And the wait time is shorter. This question is definitely easier it is on Shavuot that we commemorate to answer. The mission of the HBLA, the revelation of the Torah to Moses to assist Jews in need of temporary financial assistance, comes directly from the Torah that was revealed on Shavuot. In Parsha Mishpatim we are commanded to never charge interest on loans made to our fellow Jews, and for 120 years, the HBLA has faithfully fulfilled this mandate. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been given as loans to the Jewish residents of Western New York and this has been done without ever charging any interest. In order to continue this important work, the HBLA has embarked on a 120 Campaign to raise funds that will increase the loan capacity and make even more dollars available to meet a wide variety of needs in our community. From home and car repairs to adoption, camp, and educational expenses, the reasons for loans are as varied as the people who benefit from them. As you enjoy your cheesecake on Shavuot, remember that there are those among us whose lives have been made so much sweeter thanks to help from the HBLA. THE OPPORTUNITY by Beth Steinberg TO SAVE A LIFE As has already been publicized on these pages and in the wider Buffalo news media, Kadimah Academy, as we have known it for the past sixty years, will be closing its doors at the end of this school year. The new partnership that has been developed with The Park School of Buffalo is exciting and groundbreaking, and those who dedicated themselves to finding a new model to deliver on our mission of educating Jewish youth in Buffalo and Western NY deserve great commendation for their vision, creativity, and commitment. Several of our current students are currently preparing to begin their next school year as “Kadimah Scholars at Park School,” as are others not previously affiliated with us.

While we celebrate the beginning of this partnership, we must also acknowledge that many of our emotions are bittersweet. Our history of sixty years of commitment to an independent brick-and-mortar non- denominational all-day Jewish Day School deserves homage. The word “Kadimah” means “forward” in Modern Hebrew. It was chosen in recognition of the growing popularity of the By Rabbi Sara Rich language in the newly-created Israeli state, and it accurately represented the spirit of “Do you want to save a life?” This is the question Allana the founders’ hopes for the school: Forward- Rosenberg, Nathaniel Davenport, and Michael Dubin pose to looking, forward-thinking, and dynamic.
