Ap- parently, they’ve got this thing out called “edible cookie dough,” which is a surprise to me, ‘cause I’ve been eating cookie dough for at least 30 years now without any noticeable side effects. So then I started doing some online research, and the fi rst thing that came up was this warning from the CDC telling consumers not to eat raw cookie dough, ‘cause apparently it’s got raw fl our and uncooked egg juice in it that could kill you deader than the Falcons’ playoff chances. Basically, those people down there in Atlanta are just now get- ting around to letting us know that eating clumps and clumps of Toll- house batter might give us E.coli or salmonella poisoning. Which, again, is kinda’ shocking to me, because I’ve been eating unpro- tected cookie dough since I was a kindergartner and never expe- rienced any of the horrifi c symp- toms the CDC keeps yammering on and on about. And it’s not like we were buying the high-end Pillsbury stuff when I was a kid to begin with. We used to buy that super clumpy Bi-Lo cookie dough, the kind that was so hyper-processed that we literal- ly had to roll the stuff in confec- tioners sugar just to get any taste out of it whatsoever. So I can only imagine what kind of stuff they let sneak through quality control on that particular product — really, listeria is one of my lesser con- cerns, now that I think back on it. So when I was reading all of these CDC warnings, my fi rst thought was, “Oh, here we go again, with the nanny state try- ing to dictate every little sliver of our lives again, tryin’ to tell me I ain’t got the right to put chunks of cookie dough in my off-brand Raisin Bran while watching car- toons at 3 o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday.” Which, for the re- cord, is something I don’t person- ally do — that much. But then, I started thinking about my own health record. As a conservative estimate, I’m guess- ing I’ve had to have eaten at least a ton of uncooked cookie dough in my lifetime so far, which means I’ve had at least a couple of thou- sand pounds of the goop passing through my bloodstream. Yet de- spite that insanely high volume of cookie dough buying a time- share in my digestive tract for the last three decades, I can’t recall a SINGLE time I’ve gotten sick from uncooked dough. Which, logically, means I’m either a.) the single luckiest person in history, mathematically-speaking, or b.) completely immune to any and all cookie dough-borne pathogens. Or maybe it’s c.) — that all of this anti-raw cookie dough propa- ganda is nothing more than a bun- cha’ hyped up hullaballoo meant to scare people out of enjoying their God-given rights as Ameri- can consumers. You know, maybe the real problem here, on the microbio- logical-level, ain’t that consent- ing adults sometimes eat a tube of cookie dough every week as a recreational activity (which, again, I must state is not some- thing I engage in … all the time.) Instead, maybe it’s the fact that people nowadays live in such bac- teria-free environments that even the namby-pamby bacillus wrig- gling around in the Betty Crocker mix can become life-threatening. In fact, we’re hopped up on so many antibiotics and antihista- mines and anti-depressants that we’re losing herd immunity and the microbes are starting to out- smart our super drugs and become resistant to everything we throw at them. Which, to this lifelong, un- repentant, uncooked cookie dough-eater, sounds WAY more dangerous than popping a couple of unbaked Otis Spunkmeyers down your esophagus from time- to-time, don’t it? ISCIPLINE Serving as an inspiration to people half her age, DeeDee Cox captured a world powerlifting title in her sixth month of competition. In September, the 46-year-old Adairsville resi- dent won the Masters Division 45-49 at the World Powerlifting Championship. “It is a shame for a woman to grow old without ever seeing the strength and beauty of which her body is capable,” Cox said. & “Powerlifting is defi nitely very challenging. It takes a lot of discipline and dedication. “Most people I come across fi nd it very surprising, yet fasci- nating, that I am a woman with the strength to push the weight I do in the gym. I get a lot of the ‘wow’ factor. All of the men at EDICATION my gym are very supportive of my goals and ambitions. It is my passion.” Presented by the Southern Powerlifting Federation, the World Powerlifting Championship was held in Atlanta Sept. 20. Initially “shocked” at her accomplishment, Cox shared she was Adairsville woman captures “ecstatic and on cloud nine” as she took in the moment. “I am honored for the recognition, especially, for my person- al records I hit at competition,” she said. “It is not often that world powerlifting title women my age compete in this sport, much less hit the numbers I achieved. “The teamwork between all the women there was so inspir- ing. It was so exciting to see every woman cheering on each other. We were yelling encouraging words, clapping for each other, wiping each other’s tears, and hugging each other over all D wins and personal achievements. Most of us were strangers to each other, however we were there to support each other.” As Cox noted, she set some personal records at the world championship, winning her division with a 319.7-pound squat, 170-pound bench press and 325.2-pound deadlift. During her April contest at the SPF Grit House Classic in Cleveland, Ten- nessee, her lifts included 300 pounds on squat, 175 bench and 310 deadlift. Competing in the 198-plus weight class Masters Division in both events, Cox had three attempts in each category — squat, bench and deadlift — with her maximum weights tallied for an overall score. “DeeDee has worked her butt off and it shows,” said Cox’s coach, Albert Jones. “Her strength continues to climb, and she is a very driven person so that helps. “DeeDee is very calm and anxious at the same time. There is no fear from her once she gets under the bar, weights just move her. Once she is competing, she enters a much more comfort- able state of mind. The competition is fun for her.” For Jones, who trains Cox at his Adairsville gym, helping her reach new powerlifting milestones is a rewarding experience. “Watching her make attempts at weight that she has not tried and succeeded with, completing those attempts are some of the most proud moments I’ve gotten to enjoy with her,” he said. “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone you train achieve their goals and are able to experience that with them. “It’s inspiring. She and many others here make this one of the best lifestyle changes ever to happen to me.” Opening Reps and Sets in April 2018, Jones also has tasted success in the powerlifting arena, although several back injuries have impacted his ability to continually compete. Some of his accomplishments include SPF World Sub Master Champion 2019, State of Georgia Sub Master title holder at 198 pounds and Bill Kazmaier’s 2001 State open bench press competition champion. “It wasn’t until I was able to open a gym and study the body full time that I was actually able to grasp the concept as a whole,” Jones said. “Trial and error from personal experiences have helped to understand that everyone is different in mind and body. This helped me to train DeeDee and see where she needed adjustments. “We do video break downs of her form while not in person or one on one and analyze each set so that we can come back and break them down together. It’s a science in understanding the body and how it moves. All of us are built different, so it’s imperative to understand the study of kinesiology, mobility, body and joint structure. These are all important to training as a powerlifter and in general to diagnose injury and prevent them.” A mother of two adult children, Cox is the operations coordi- nator at United Site Services’ Adairsville branch. In 2010, her fi tness journey began as she joined Ladies Fitness in Carters- ville. “I went for a physical and was told I was in danger of becom- ing a diabetic if I did not change the way I was eating,” she said. “It was then that I decided, along with changing my nutrition RANDY PARKER/THE DAILY TRIBUNE NEWS that I would exercise to get in shape. About 45 minutes later, we emerged through a pergola into the school parking lot. Along the way I saw a karst sinkhole from its observation platform, a one-room schoolhouse along with its symbolic outhouse, a pioneer cabin, a well, an orchard fi lled with persimmon and paw paw trees and blueberry bushes (all natives), a bog from its observation platform, a hillside deck, and an am- phitheater with its view through the trees of the school building. EVHS PETS OF THE WEEK About 25 trees are marked with identifi cation signs too — an ar- boretum. Earlier in the day adjacent to the school, I saw raised planting beds with the remnants of vegetables that made it through the fl ash drought as well as some lavender and dianthus that tend to thrive in drier climate. Nearby at the end of the building, a butter- fl y garden served to attract pollinators. I realized after seeing all this that the Kingston Elementary School Living Classroom could be classifi ed as a demonstration garden. It possessed all the characteristics needed to educate its users on a range of subject areas to include gardening. I decided to volunteer on the next clean-up day. On a cold Saturday morning a few weeks later, three student volunteers from Cass High School followed me down the trail to the orchard. Located between the Pioneer Cabin and an outdoor classroom comprised of two banks of benches that might seat about 70 students, we planned to clear away weeds and install cag- es around the persimmon and paw paw trees and blueberry bushes to stop deer and rabbits and maybe other critters from chewing them into oblivion. I learned my team was comprised of a 9th grade student – Ashton, and two 11th grade students — Phoebe and Caleb. First things fi rst, we surveyed the site to see what needed to be done. We walked the rows of native plants to see which ones survived the recent drought and animal damage. We measured the distance between two fence posts placed alongside the plants to mark their locations. Then we unrolled wire to get a rough mea- surement to make a cylindrical cage. While two young people installed the fi rst cage with zip ties, another cut the next 90-inch length of wire. Each of these student volunteers took turns. Be- cause we moved around getting all the little parts of the job done, we didn’t really notice the cold. In a matter of a few hours we cleared away weeds from around the plants, manufactured 10 wire cages, and installed them around those plants that survived the hot summer and hotter fall. We also installed cages around two fi g trees that were discovered in the weeds. We didn’t get all the weeds cleared away but maybe we will on another workday. At times either in the media or ‘in and around’ as a matter of conversation, I heard people lamenting the state of the current generation with a litany of descriptive words – none positive – ac- companied with head bobbing to affi rm their statement. A few times, I almost found myself on the brink of agreeing. Then I re- membered: I was part of the long-hair generation about 50 years ago who weren’t going to amount to anything. Although we aren’t perfect, I believe we turned out all right. And no doubt this generation will be all right too.
