The features (pits and gullies) cutting the natural drift were associated with Late 15th to 17th century activity in the backplots of the features fronting Cheylesmore Lane. There were likely to have been refuse pits and property boundaries, emphasised by the high quantity of domestic was retrieved from Archaeological Investigations Project 2004 Field Evaluations West Midlands the features. A stone surface or path post-dated the pits and gullies. It may have been part of a yard surface within the backplots, but equally may have formed the post-medieval boundary shown on the 18th century maps. [Au(abr)]

A possible boundary ditch that contained pottery dated to the early 19th century was identified in the southernmost trench. In the northernmost trench, located between the buildings fronting the Moorfield, an oval brick structure within a large area of modern disturbance was identified. This structure was approximately 1.3m in diameter and constructed from purple engineering bricks. It was interpreted as either a well associated with the allotment plots, or an escape hatch for an air-raid shelter. No other archaeological features or deposits were encountered during the work. An agreed sample of 3% was examined by trial trenching. Archaeological deposits included a ditch with pottery dating to the late Iron Age period in Trench 2 and large ditches with Roman Severn Valley ware in Trench 5. A single sherd of Roman pottery was also recovered from a possible feature at the southern end of Trench 3. Although structural remain such as walls or post holes were not present the amount of late Iron Age pottery recovered from the ditch in Trench 2 suggests that occupation was most probably present in the immediate area. Substantial stone drains were present in Trenches 1 and 2 , the stratigraphy and construction of these also suggest a possibly early date though this was not certain. [Au(abr)]

A further post hole to the south was smaller and of a different form and may not have been associated with the larger post pit, though this cannot be ruled out. Two substantial rubbish pits were also present, one containing later medieval pottery including a sherd of Brill Boarstall ware, usually dated to the late 13th to 14th centuries. There was no sign of any medieval back plot industry and there was no surviving stratigraphy. [Au(abr)] SMR primary record number:36789

Two trenches were excavated. Medieval features and deposits survived on the site. It seemed likely that the first phase of activity was the excavation of a pit in trench one. A post hole excavated in trench 1 was probably backfilled by the late 13th century or early 14th century. In trench 2, the area seemed to have been terraced during the post-medieval period and only a small area of later medieval soil lying directly on top of the natural remained. During the 18th century a wall was built. This was probably the return of a garden wall situated to the west of the study area. [Au(abr)] SMR primary record number:5741

One trench was excavated at the Moat House, Lognor, Shropshire. A gully of probable medieval date was excavated. A series of undated stake holes to the west of the gully could be associated with it. Post holes in the west end of the trench were possibly medieval and were probably part of a structure with the posts removed in the 18th century. Soil horizons excavated in the east end of the trench probably represent garden soils. Several 19th century features were sealed by a 19th century cobbled yard. In the eastern part of the site, under the soil of late 17th century gardens, deposits containing 14th century industrial material on top of made-up ground built up during the 13th and early 14th centuries were identified. Archaeological evaluation at Old Farm Road, Mancetter, on the edge of the area occupied by the Roman fortress, was able to demonstrate that the proposed development site lies on the line of the Roman defences in the north-west corner of the fortress. A sequence of two parallel ditches of 'military type', dating from the 1st century AD was found preserved beneath the floor slabs of 20th century houses. An oven type feature located outside the outer of the two ditches represents the first evidence of Roman activity outside the western boundary of the fortress.
