Duke University researcher Johannes Kylstra has at- tempted just that by trying to transform man from an air breather to a liquid breather. During the Seventies and early Eighties he experimented with filling the lungs of mice, rats, and dogs with a saline solution satu- rated with oxygen. The animals breathed as long as 43 minutes with no adverse af- tereffects. Encouraged, Kylstra filled one lung of a human subject with a similar so- lution and was gratified to get the same results. The man breathed comfortably for 47 minutes and suffered no aftereffects once his lung was drained. Since then Kylstra has experimented with more promising solutions called fluorocar- bon emulsions, which do a more efficient job of retaining oxygen. Although Kylstra sees the technique as limited to such emergency applications as escape from submarines, aquanaut James Miller thinks
