Site Description and Proposal 1.1 The application site is located to the south east of Yarnton and south west of Kidlington. It is situated and accessed to the north of the A44, adjacent to the western side of the Oxford Canal. The access runs through the existing industrial buildings located at The Gables and the site is to the north of these buildings. 1.2 The site has a total area of 2.59 hectares and consists of low lying, relatively flat, agricultural land. There are a number of trees and hedgerows that identify the boundary of the site. 1.3 The site is within the Oxford Green Belt, it is adjacent to a classified road and the public tow path, it is within the flood plain, contains BAP Priority Habitats, is part of a proposed Local Wildlife Site and is within 2km of SSSI’s. 1.4 The application consists of the elements set out above in the ‘proposal’. It is not intended that, other than the manager’s moorings, these moorings be used for residential purposes. Oxoniensia 78 txt 4+index_Oxoniensia 17/11/2013 12:05 Page 213 ROMANO-BRITISH VILLA AT COMBE 213 NOTES Archaeological Work in Oxford, 2012 In 2012 the Heritage and Specialist Services Team completed the Oxford Archaeological Plan (OAP). The resulting resource assessment, research agenda and characterisation reports are available on the council website, along with a six-year Archaeological Action Plan for the city. The year also saw a number of substantial city centre projects resulting from the expansion of college facilities, and some notable new information resulting from small-scale commercial and domestic development. Provisional summaries for selected sites are provided below. SELECTED PROJECTS 19 St Andrew’s Lane, Headington In January JMHS carried out an archaeological evaluation prior to the construction of a small extension at 19 St Andrew’s Lane. The evaluation recorded a post-medieval well and a series of cess pits filled with dump deposits containing animal bone, late-medieval and early post- medieval pottery and brick. At least six post holes from an unidentified structure possibly post- dating the pits were recorded. Nos. 6–7 High Street (Jack Wills, formerly Ryman’s Stationers) In February three test pits were excavated in the basement of Nos. 6–7 High Street by OA. A number of medieval pits containing domestic and butchery waste were recorded, along with a stone drain or wall foundation. The backfill of one feature contained a fired clay annular discoidal loom weight of likely early to middle Anglo-Saxon date (c.400–850). In June a lift pit was excavated in the basement revealing in section the edge of a possible wood-lined pit, potentially a ‘cellar pit’.

The provision of entertainment in the form of Indoor and outdoor films, live and recorded music plus also the provision of late night refreshments and alcohol till 3.00am This is unacceptable. The site is only some 300 meters from Park Close which is a sheltered housing complex where old and vulnerable people live. These residents will be greatly disturbed by loud music and possibly frightened by loud and drunk people at 3.00am Also the vehicle noise could be a big problem to these residents in the early hours of the morning. These activities are obviously designed to draw in large crowds of people. The lane to reach these premises is very narrow and not suitable for heavy traffic. Has The Manor adequate parking facilities? Has anyone stopped to consider these retired residents and the impact it will have on the rest of the village. I therefore object on behalf of my mother, who is 100 years old and registered blind. Excavations at Callow H ill, Glympton and Stonesfield, Oxon. By NICHOLAS THOMAS INTRODUCTION HE excavations described in this report were carried out by the Oxford University Archaeological Society in order to throw new light on the problemsT posed by the group of Roman villas that lies in the area defined by the north Oxfordshire Grim's Dyke. It was agreed that this could best be done by investigating the ditch which enclosed one of these villas-Callow Hill, 3! miles NW of Woodstock ( ational Grid: 42/40919s)-and the prominent earthworks immediately to the east of it. These earthworks appeared to have much in common with Grim's Dyke itself, which runs through Blenheim Park about one mile farther towards Woodstock. It was hoped that it would be possible to deduce some relationship, either chrono logical or political, between the villa at Callow Hill-and hence, to some extent, between the other villas hereabouts-and Grim's Dyke. The work was carried out during the first three weeks of September, 1950, under my direction, assisted by Mr. Alan Hunter.' No previous research had been undertaken at Callow Hill. The site has long been known because of the amount of Romano-British building debris and potsherds which lie about on the surface. Kirtlington Quarry: its history and geology and the search for early mammals Eric F Freeman Abstract: Kirtlington Quarry, a well-known former exposure of Middle Jurassic rocks north of Oxford, was worked for cement production from 1907 until 1929. Important but largely unpublished research undertaken there at the time by Charles J. Bayzand, a museum assistant and geological lecturer, is placed in the context of better known work by M. Odling and W.J. Arkell, his contemporaries at Oxford University. When integrated with the quarry’s industrial archaeology and growth, as reconstructed from old maps and cement production records, Bayzand’s work suggests that a sediment rich in mammal and other microvertebrate fossils, the Kirtlington Mammal Bed, was once extensively exposed, but went unrecognised, and had been largely quarried away prior to its eventual discovery in 1974. Augmented by more recent work, the old research by Bayzand, Odling and Arkell allows the palaeoecology of the Mammal Bed to be modelled, including coastal dune-fields and mammal remains from the faecal debris of theropod dinosaurs. Since the days of Robert Plot (1640–1696), and his were found at the junction between two of the classic Natural History of Oxford-Shire, the area to the north Middle Jurassic rock units named by William Smith, of Oxford (Fig. 1), with its former profusion of quarries the Forest Marble and the Great Oolite. The bones were in highly fossiliferous Jurassic strata, and its proximity acquired by the Oxford University Museum, which had to the learned folk of Oxford University, has played an been opened in 1857, with William Smith’s nephew, important part in the development of geology.
