Airshow; Optional Photo Pass Sharjah Airport Flying A380! Optional excursions to Sharjah Aviation Museum; Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah Airports

Sunday 17th - Thursday, 21st November

The Dubai Aerospace Exhibition and Airshow (DAX) is held every 2 years, and for the first time it will take place at its new venue: “Dubai World Central” in Jebel Ali. This new airport will eventually grow to be one of the largest and busiest airports in the world, but it currently only operates cargo services; charter flights are expected to move over from Dubai International Airport (DXB) this year. Eventually DXB will be for the sole use of Emirates Airlines.

This large international aviation exhibition and airshow is similar to Farnborough, Paris and Berlin; and each afternoon there is an airshow featuring the latest civil and military aircraft, and famous international aerobatic teams.

You have 3 full days in the with several options: attending DAX for one or more days, enjoying a day air-side at Sharjah International Airport (see next paragraph), logging and photographing aircraft from the hotel’s roof, or time at leisure to explore Dubai as you wish.

At Sharjah International Airport it is possible to purchase a Photography Pass to go air-side at this famous ‘mecca’ for classic types of Russian/Soviet aircraft; operated by rare and exotic carriers based throughout Africa and the 16 countries of the CIS, many are air cargo companies, which very rarely, if ever, venture to the UK. Some only remain in business for a few weeks or months. There is also a maintenance company based at the airport specialising in Russian aircraft and 707s, and so Sharjah’s ramps usually have a very interesting selection of classic aircraft. Think quality, rather than quantity! And there are the scheduled flights of various airlines, including . Please see page 4 for further information about visiting Sharjah. Please note that the cost of the Pass, and transfers to/from Sharjah Airport, are not included in the tour price. Passes must be obtained in advance as there are limited places available. Please annotate your booking form if interested.

Subject to sufficient interest there is the possibility of an optional, full day coach excursion to the airports at Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah (ramp tours are currently possible only at the latter), the Il-76 at Umm Aq, and the excellent Sharjah Aviation Museum. As the security situation can change, your Tour Manager will discuss the options with everyone after your arrival in Dubai.

Due to new regulations we are no longer able to apply for Media Passes for the whole group: all applications must be done personally on-line by going to the website and completing the application form (media accreditation will be ‘open’ from September). You may be required to provide supporting evidence or letter from an editor). A Media Pass gives you access to various exhibitor’s chalets and hospitality suites out on the ramp, some of which have excellent high-level viewing terraces. You also have the facilities of the Media Centre with complimentary drinks, food, internet – and air-conditioning!

The general public are not allowed to attend the DAX; therefore, if you are not applying for media accreditation you will need to purchase a Trade Visitor Pass. This is also done personally and on-line (we can no longer do it for the whole group); if you do not have access to the internet we can assist. Please call Graham on 01487 832922. The price will be announced nearer the time; however, we expect this to be around US$30.00 for all or some days at the show. We will advise you when known.

We fly with Emirates Airlines from Heathrow to Dubai, both flights being operated by A380s! It is also possible to fly with Emirates from Manchester by A380, and from Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow (non A380 services), subject to availability and possible supplement.

Coach transfers are with the hotel’s courtesy vehicle or local charter company – see General Information, page 5.

We stay 3-nights at the Marco Polo Hotel in Dubai with its excellent facilities - very popular with all our previous groups over the years. As well as a 24-hour café there are 5 other excellent restaurants: Indian, Sri Lankan, Chinese, and with live entertainment, an American Tex/Mex and an English pub serving pub- meals. The hotel also has an outside swimming pool. Buffet breakfast is included in the tour price.

Our hotel is a short distance away from DXB, situated alongside the approach path; from the roof it is possible to log and photograph aircraft landing and taking off. Aircraft pass alongside the Marco Polo, not directly overhead like at other hotels located nearer the airport, and allow photographs to be taken side- on, rather than from directly underneath.

We have permission to go on the roof at any time during our stay. It is also possible to spot through the windows of some of the hotel’s rooms.

Airport transfers to/from the hotel on our arrival and departure are included in the tour price, but not to/from the DAX or Sharjah. This allows you the freedom to go to/from the show when you like.

Transfers to/from the DAX are very simple, quick and in-expensive, and can be done by taxi or on the excellent Dubai Metro system. The hotel’s coach will do one free transfer each morning to the Union metro station, the nearest to the hotel (it is only a 10-15 minutes walk); from there we take the metro to Ibn Battuta, the nearest stop to the show site; then the free shuttle bus service to the site.

SHARJAH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PHOTOGRAPHY PASSES

At Sharjah International Airport all movements ‘air side’, i.e. between the various ramps, can only be done using an airport coach; it is no longer possible to do it on foot.

On arriving at each ramp you are able to walk as safety permits; for example, on the busy cargo ramp, next to the fire station, you can only walk around the outside or in between aircraft parked on the stands – you cannot walk directly across the ramp to the other side.

On the 3 furthest ramps you can walk as you like. On all our previous visits we were given an air-side coach and driver and this arrangement worked very well – with both the driver and coach permanently with the group there is no more walking miles under the hot desert sun!

When not ‘tramping the ramps’ you can sit outside the airport fire station, ideally located alongside the main taxiway and runway at their mid-point, and the passenger terminal ramp. On the other side of the station is the taxiway to the busy cargo ramp. The Fire Station’s facilities include some shaded seating, a cold water drinking fountain, toilets and air-conditioning inside the building. You are guaranteed a warm welcome from the friendly fire officers and firemen!

Along with your Pass you will receive several ‘freebies’ including a complimentary hi-viz, orange ‘day-glo’ jacket (wearing is mandatory air-side) and cap; and at lunchtime, a sandwich lunchbox.

On our previous tours most enthusiasts elected to spend 1 or 2 days at Sharjah and applied for the mandatory Photographers Pass. Access air-side is from 08:00-18:00. There is a charge for the Pass, and in the past Ian Allan has enjoyed a discounted price of Dhms 800 per person per day (approximately £140.00). Payment must be handed to the Tour Manager following your arrival at the hotel in Dubai, in Dirhams cash.

If you are planning to spend 2 or more days on the ramp, ideally they should be on consecutive days. Like previously, we will submit all the application forms, scanned copy of your passport, photograph etc in advance. We then pick-up our passes on the day from the Pass Office with the minimum of delay.

Please annotate on your booking form the dates you would like to go, and a Photo Pass booking form and details will be sent to you.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Payment for Ian Allan Aviation Tours A deposit of £300.00 per person per tour should accompany your Booking Form, with the balance due 10 weeks prior to the tour’s departure. Please see your Booking Confirmation/Invoice for the exact date. Please note that a reminder of the payment date will not be sent.

Coach Travel Ian Allan Aviation Tours only use coaches chartered from reputable companies, with a driver. Where we have had to cancel a tour, due to the small number of bookings, we have looked at the possibility of renting a 16-18 seater mini-van, with our tour manager driving. However, without exception, the hiring of such a vehicle is illegal if any of the occupants make any payment towards the rental price, fuel and/or other expenses - known as “for hire or reward”. Any such rental, made without these facts being made known to the rental company at the time of booking, also invalidates all insurance covering the vehicle, contents and persons. The DVLA has also confirmed that any “for hire or reward” rental could breach the normal driving classification of a standard U.K. driver’s license. Therefore, we do not undertake any tours using 9-18 seater mini-vans from a rental company; either with our tour manager, or a member of the group, driving.

Passports and Visas Citizens of the UK are required to be in possession of a Full UK/EU Passport, valid for at least 6 months from the date of your return to the UK.

UK citizens do not require a Visa for entry into the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Non-UK citizens should contact the relevant Embassy in their country of residence.

FCO consular advice The FCO's consular service is a major operation. Every hour of every day consular staff around the world are advising and helping British nationals. We suggest you visit their website for up-to-date passport, visa and security information on the destination you intend visiting: www.fco.gov.uk/knowbeforeyougo

Hand baggage - departing from Heathrow, you can take 1 standard-sized bag no bigger than 22” x 15” x 8” (55cm x 38cm x 20cm) including wheels, pockets and handles. Maximum weight is 15lbs (7kgs).

Wheelie Bags with built-in wheels and retractable handles will be permitted as cabin baggage only if the total dimensions (length, width and height) add up to less than 45” (114cms). Larger, overnight models of this type of bag will not be permitted in the cabin.

Restrictions remain in place for the carriage of liquids, gels, and creams in hand baggage for all passengers departing from and transferring through all EU airports. Some other airports around the world operate their own restrictions. Customers are advised to check before they travel.

Limited quantities of liquids (individual containers must not exceed 3.5 fl oz or 100ml), are allowed as hand baggage but must be carried separately through security in a clear plastic, zip-top or re-sealable bag that does not exceed 8ins x 8ins (20cm x 20cm), or quart size. Baggage Weight Restrictions – UK Airports Since 1st June 2004, any single piece of checked baggage weighing more than 70lbs (32kgs) has not been accepted at check-in by any airline operating from London’s Heathrow Airport. The BAA may introduce this limit at their other airports in the UK (and so might non-BAA airports), in an attempt to reduce manual handling injuries amongst airport staff. Please bear this in mind when packing your suitcase.

Health Requirements Currently there are no known mandatory health requirements for visiting the UAE. However, you should consult your local doctor or medical centre for the latest information.

A copy of the policy must be forwarded to Ian Allan Aviation Tours.

Individual insurance policies are arranged through CoverMore Insurance Services Limited; the premiums for which will vary according to your circumstances. Full details are available on request.

These policies also include cover for non-scheduled flights, i.e. pleasure flights, where the aircraft is licensed and insured to undertake such flights, and where a payment is made.

Wheelchair Assistance at Airports Anyone requiring wheelchair assistance at airports must have this service requested and confirmed in advance. Airlines and/or airports can no longer provide this service without prior confirmation, therefore, please annotate your booking form accordingly.

Meals Meals are not included in the price of our tours unless they are included within the room rate as we realise that not everyone wants three meals a day. Furthermore, hotel meals can be expensive and in general, we have found it is better to allow each person to decide for themselves. On this tour, buffet breakfast at the hotel is included.

Flexible Itinerary We are very happy for enthusiasts to take time away from the printed itinerary to pursue their own interests during multi-day stays in the same place, so long as they inform the Tour Manager. It will be the individual’s responsibility to ensure that they re-join the group in the hotel at the stated time on the day of departure, and no responsibility can be accepted by Ian Allan Aviation Tours for any missed departure nor the consequences of any action where independent arrangements are made.

Overseas Enthusiasts For enthusiasts residing outside of the UK who would prefer to join the tour in Dubai instead of flying with the main group, we will be pleased to offer a “Land Only” price. Please contact us for a price. NO FLIGHTS are included in a “Land Only” arrangement. Please also note that “Land Only” prices include neither arrival nor departure airport transfers although should your arrival/departure coincide with that of the group, a seat will be offered when available for an appropriate supplement.

Flight Timings All flight departure and arrival times are correct at the time of preparing this itinerary; however, airlines can change these times with little or no prior warning. In practice such changes are only a few minutes either way and your final itinerary will show the actual times. Such changes are beyond the control of Ian Allan Aviation Tours.

Connecting Flight/Rail/Coach Services from UK Regional Airports Each Ian Allan Aviation tour can only operate once it has received a minimum number of bookings, therefore, we strongly recommend you do not make any non-refundable connecting flight, rail or coach reservations until you have spoken with us.

Also, airlines occasionally change the arrival/departure times of their flights. Such timings are re- confirmed by the airline to us nearer to departure.

For details of the latest offers call Ian Allan on 01932 255625.

Airport Hotel and/or Car Parking We can offer special rates for the above at most UK airports. Please ask for details.

Meet & Greet Car Parking: drive from your home or overnight hotel, directly to the designated Pick Up/Drop Off lanes immediately outside Terminal 3 and your car will be collected by a driver and taken to an off-airport, secure, car park. On your return the driver and your car will be waiting for you in the Pick Up/Drop Off lane. Simple and very convenient. Recommended by our Tour Managers – please call for details.
