PRESIDENT’S PATTER – SEPTEMBER 2020

The highlight for August was the “THE HUGGING Reminder about Odyssey on 24 to 26 October; SILO RUN”. As Ian Cowan put it so eloquently more details later in the magazine. “Loved the whole weekend, no one got hurt, good We have had several new members and as it is a laughs, a lot of caring, good comrades.”. long time since we have gathered information, we There are plenty of photos on Facebook in the have created a JUB Member Profile – refer to link album “2020 Silo Run”. below. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/joodalupulyss https://forms.gle/3ChhcbWhQYsATaA39 esriders/photos/?filter=albums)

Ten pin bowling was well attended and accompanied with the usual boisterousness! Nicky Roper was the star of the night. There are 2 special rides in September: 1. Memorial Ride on 13th to Lake Leschenaultia (BYO or purchase from the café); 2. Visit to Serpentine Aircraft Builders Club on 27th (more details later in the magazine).

On a more serious note, please do NOT consume raffle prize wine at JSA. We are not charged for the use of the room, so I think it is bad manners not to buy their drinks.

Now that Spring has sprung and the weather That’s All Folks more conducive for riding it would be good to have more planned rides on the Ride Calendar. If Stay Upright and Keep (COVID) Safe every member led just one ride a year there would be a different ride leader every week. There are only 6 steps for leading a ride: 1. Choose venue for morning tea; 2. Choose venue for lunch (if applicable); 3. Confirm venues are open and can accommodate JUB; 4. Plan a route (I use Google Maps); 5. At the ride briefing ask for a volunteer for Tail End Charlie (TEC) and reiterate the importance of corner marking and waiting for TEC; 6. Have fun!

Visit to Motor Museum of WA

At the later start of 9am 17 bikes and 19 riders departed Beldon to ride via the market gardens of Wanneroo and a loop in the Swan Valley to the Motor Museum of WA. Two more riders joined us at the Village Café. Having enjoyed refreshments, we made our way to the Museum where Ken and Lionel were patiently waiting for us.

Patric regaled us with a history of the Museum and its contents before we made our own way home. Thank you Patric. Well worth a visit. https://www.facebook.com/MotorMuseumOfWesternAustralia/

Thanks to Jim B for TEC.

“Queen” for a moment!

Alan’s Ride – 30 August

Brunch ride to Fremantle

Six bikes today. However, I had to get Ken to take the ride as my chain became problematic. Tried to rectify before the ride but wasn’t happy so brought the bike home. Need to have a new chain and sprockets fitted.

WEDNESDAY WANDERERS REPORTS

WEDNESDAY RIDE – 12 August 2020 The weather was forecast to be fine after 8.00 but didn’t look promising so wasn’t surprised as I rounded the corner at the back of Puma to see 4 bikes, Brett on his Harley plus Wally, Thai Grant and Mike on their BMW’s then the other Grant on the K1200 BM arrived so with mine it was a BMW day. Mike offered a couple of ride alternatives and I likewise and it was decided we would head to the hills with the Destination being the Byford Bakery, I led and Mike volunteered to be Tec, Brett had to be home by 10 as business was calling so he reluctantly departed, we decided not to corner mark unless we got split and so the 5 BMs set off out Gnangara to Lord, a brief run along Reid then through Midland, Boya, Lesmurdie, Kalamunda, Roleystone,Bedfordale and arriving at Byford about 10.20, perfect timing for Hot Coffee, pies, toasties etc. And plenty of repartee. Thai Grant headed off for parts at Myaree while the rest of us took the Tonkin and were home by midday. The rest of you missed a good day, the only rain was just like a fine mist for a minute in Gnangara Rd Regards Ross

WEDNESDAY RIDE - 19 August 2020 Fifteen parishioners of the Worshipful Company of Wednesday Riders charted a course for Café@Park in Gin Gin, having decided to take a biological break near Orion Cafe (Yanchep Lagoon). Half of the crew opted to stop for coffee, so the rest chatted outside. The fine weather and beach views made this a less- than-onerous task. Mobile again, Mike P led us through Military and GG Brook to the café in Gin Gin. Parked up, riding gear stowed and up to the counter to order, we found that there was only one member of staff and that service would be quite slow. Not to worry, we’ll go to Bindoon Bakehaus. Marshall the troops, explain the changed plan, and set off for Bindoon, but not before making a crucial error. TEC was sent on ahead of the rest of us, unbeknownst to the majority. Amazingly, we only lost one rider (Paul on his Indian), and he had the insight to sense a problem and find us at the café. There was plenty of room at the Bakehaus for us to assemble a long table that we could perch around and yatter across, so that’s what we did. Given the delays, we opted for a direct route home, down the GN Hwy and onto Tonkin. Lovely day, almost a false spring. Thanks all, especially Mike P and our TEC Dave S (Pom).

WEDNESDAY RIDE – 26 August 2020 Medical Emergency Interrupts the Ride Avocados Café and Bar in Kelmscott was our destination on this mild and sunny day. There were twenty of us, so we thought it prudent to phone ahead and advise of our intended patronage. To this purpose, Karen left a message on their answering machine. Our route was to be through the back of Mundaring, the dam road, then Pickering Brook etc. The ride was longish, so a pee break was planned at the Weir Lookout. Arriving at the lookout, it was evident that we had lost a few of our number. It transpired that the delay was caused by someone’s wife having called him, whilst he was riding, to seek her Medicare number. Stage two of the ride was by far the nicer. Lots of sweeping roads through forest and fruit-producing farmland led us, eventually, to Avocados. It was just as well that we’d rung ahead, because the staff were very busy and service was efficient but slow. Having been informed that we’d rung ahead, the manageress revealed that she’d been too busy to listen to her voice-mail. I always enjoy this place. It’s got such a nice ambience, with sufficient space to spread out without being like a canteen. Homeward journey was Brookton, Albany, Tonkin and as-you-like-it. Good to have Norm Dann riding with us again. Thanks to Dennis B for being our TEC.

THE ISLE OF MAN TT RACES – DUNLOP AGAIN https://www.iomttraces.com/racing/history/dunlop-again

Michael Dunlop takes over the mantle of King of the Mountain as the Dunlop Dynasty rises once more at the TT

In 2014, , riding a factory supported BMW, was the name on everyone's lips and the racer didn't disappoint, taking three wins for BMW in the Superbike, Superstock and Senior races, a fitting tribute to the 75th anniversary celebrations of 's Senior TT victory for the Bavarian manufacturer.

Kiwi extended the lap record to an incredible 132.298mph during the opening Superbike race. The meeting was also notable for the TT debut of one , who became the event’s fastest ever newcomer with a lap of 129.104mph, a prelude to his later success, while John McGuinness won his first electric bike title with a new lap record of 117.366mph.

2015 saw McGuinness add to his titles with another victory in the TT Zero race and another new lap record on the Japanese Mugen Shinden bike, but he really saved his best for the last race of the meeting. With people seemingly having written him off, the Morecambe Missile dominated the Senior TT, clinching his 23rd race win and posting a new lap record of 132.701mph in the process.

Aside from the wins for McGuinness, the meeting was dominated by the comeback king Ian Hutchinson who took the Superstock and two Supersport race wins, his first victories since his five in a week and subsequent Silverstone accident in 2010. Anstey also recorded his first Superbike victory on the Mountain Course in the opening race of the week while Ivan Lintin claimed his debut win in the Lightweight TT.

The 2016 meeting was all about two riders – Michael Dunlop and Ian Hutchinson. Dunlop won the Superbike race and became the first rider to lap in under 17 minutes with a lap of 133.369mph on the first lap of the Superbike race whilst he increased the lap record to 133.962mph on his way to winning the Senior TT. Hutchinson took another hat-trick as he once more stood on the top step in the Superstock and both Supersport Races.

It was a similar story in the 2017 TT with Hutchinson winning the opening Superbike race and Dunlop winning the Senior. This time Hutchinson also won the Superstock race and Dunlop the only Supersport race – the second race cancelled due to bad weather.
