1 /9 1.2 Japan's Abe heads for New York for first talks with Trump (8.48/9) The brash billionaire is set to receive Abe at his Trump Tower headquarters on Thursday evening, in an encounter that will be closely watched for hints on long-standing security pacts that he has called into question.

"I'm honoured to meet with President- elect Trump ahead of other world leaders," Abe told reporters. "I'd like to discuss with President Trump our dreams for the future. "

Trump's blithe comment during the campaign that the US might be "better off" with nuclear-armed Asian allies has thrown into question the US security umbrella over Japan and South Korea.

His later disavowal of the remarks has done little to restore confidence in Washington as the lone superpower ready to face down a rising China and a capricious North Korea.

Trump has also talked about yanking thousands of troops from the region unless Tokyo and Seoul pay more of their hosting costs, despite the opportunity that would present to China and its ambitions for regional supremacy.

"The Japan-US alliance is the cornerstone of Japan's diplomacy and security," Abe said before departing. "The alliance works only when there is trust. "

"I'd like to build trust with Mr Trump and work together hand in hand for the peace and prosperity of the world. "

Dozens of leaders including China's Xi Jinping and Russia's Vladimir Putin have spoken with Trump by phone since his shock November 8 election victory.

The New York Times said offices of foreign leaders were blindly dialling in to Trump Tower as they scrambled to get the future president on the phone, prompting a denial and an insistence the transition is proceeding smoothly.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was only the second to get through, in a call set up by sports legend Greg Norman who is golfing buddies with Trump, it emerged Thursday.

The unconventional candidate has also stoked concerns in Europe -- where the NATO alliance underwrites regional security -- by warmly embracing Russian President Vladimir Putin. And he has also vowed to block the vast Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade deal, which has been championed by Abe and US President Barack Obama.

"I hope to share the importance of the Trans-Pacific Partnership," Abe said before departing for the US ahead of the APEC summit of 21 Pacific Rim economies in Peru, where leaders will defend the tenets of free trade.

The 12-nation TPP has been a key component of Obama's "pivot to Asia" and envisaged as a counterweight to China's expanding economic influence.

Abe told parliament this week that a collapse of the pact could shift momentum toward a rival trade deal promoted by China.

Despite the faultlines, the Trump camp made positive noises ahead of the meeting with Abe.

It "shows Mr Trump's commitment to the relationship" with Japan, Republican Devin Nunes, a member of the presidential transition team, told reporters after talks with an Abe aide in Washington to prepare for the meeting.

Nunes called Japan "one of our most important, longest allies", Kyodo News reported.

2 /9 2.6 Timelapse video shows how Japan managed to fix mega sinkhole in a WEEK (1.08/9) Extraordinary timelapse video has revealed how Japan managed to fix a huge sinkhole in a week with a work ethic that has shamed construction workers around the world. The footage shows how dozens of construction workers laboured through the night with diggers, cranes and cement mixers to fix the 30m wide chasm which opened up in Fukuoka, in the south west of the country. Remarkably the 15m deep hole was filled and the road reopened in a week in an astonishing lesson in efficiency. Pictures taken at various intervals during the repair work show workers at the scene night and day, while a huge crane was also brought in along with a seemingly endless stream of cement mixers. Gradually the hole is filled up before the road surface is relaid and the road reopened. Many people have expressed their amazement at the fast repair work. Construction teams in Fukuoka worked around the clock, dumping huge amounts of wet cement and sand into the huge hole and fixing electricity, gas and water lines. It is thought the road collapsed because subway construction exposed support columns of nearby buildings. The city's mayor, Soichiro Takashima, said in a statement: 'We're very sorry for causing great trouble.' Miraculously, no one was hurt when the road collapsed in Fukuoka, which is the biggest city on the southernmost main island of Kyushu. Many on social media expressed amazement at the quick recovery. 'I'm surprised the road reopened in a week!' one Twitter user said. 'Impressive. That was fast,' said another. The street reopened at 5am on Tuesday. The massive cave-in appeared in the city's bustling Hakata district, a major business and entertainment centre, with muddy underground water flowing into the hole. 'I saw a stop light fall. It was really scary,' one man told Fuji TV after it happened. The sinkhole is believed to be about 40 feet wide and 25-30 feet deep.

He was referring to what Russia refers to as the Kuril islands and Japan calls the Northern Territories. Putin will also hold his first talks with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to discuss the possibility of supplying Russian liquefied natural gas and hydrocarbons to Manila, said Ushakov. Both meetings will take place at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Peru. 4 /9 1.0 Megyn Kelly shut down a Trump supporter who said Japanese internment camps were precedent for a Muslim registry

(1.02/9) Megyn Kelly admonished a supporter of Donald Trump who invoked Japanese internment camps as precedent for a proposed registry of Muslims.

On Fox News's "The Kelly File" program on Wednesday night, Carl Higbie, a former Navy SEAL and spokesman and co-chair of Great America PAC for Donald Trump , argued in favor of the registry, which he compared to World War II-era Japanese internment camps.

Policy advisers to President-elect Donald Trump are reportedly considering creating a registry of immigrants who come to the United States from Muslim countries, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who reportedly is a "key member of Trump's transition team," told Reuters on Tuesday.

"We did it during World War II with Japanese, which you know, call it what you will, may be wrong," Higbie said, eliciting a sharp response from Kelly.

"You know better than to suggest that," Kelly said. "That's the kind of stuff that gets people scared, Carl. "

"I'm just saying there is precedent for it," Higbie replied.

"You can't be citing Japanese internment camps for anything the President-elect is going to do," Kelly fired back in a raised voice.

During World War II, more than 100,000 people of Japanese ancestry were relocated and incarcerated following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Many of them were American citizens.

Trump has expressed support for a Muslim registry during his campaign for president.

9 /9 2.1 Wales hand debut to 'the new Shane Williams' as Keelan Giles gets the nod to face Japan Keelan Giles – dubbed the new Shane Williams – is set to make his Wales debut against Japan this Saturday. The 18-year-old Ospreys wing is a pocket rocket, standing at only 5ft 8in and weighing just under 12 stone. But he is lightning quick, and will become the 75th teenager to represent Wales if he comes off the bench at the Principality Stadium on Saturday. Earlier in the week Leigh Halfpenny recalled seeing a young Giles play at their local club 10 years ago. ‘He is a boy,’ said the Wales and British and Irish Lions star. ‘I remember seeing him play one Sunday morning with the club’s mini side, under-eights I think, and you could see there was something special about him even then. ‘He has so much gas and is a huge talent.’ Giles was called up to the Wales tour to New Zealand in the summer, after a number of injuries, before he had even represented the Ospreys, but did not win his first cap. Now, though, he is set for his debut. Stand-in coach Rob Howley has made 10 changes from the team that narrowly beat Argentina. Jamie Roberts returns to inside centre, after being dropped for the first time in seven years last week, as he links up with Jonathan Davies for the 46th time in midfield. Leigh Halfpenny moves to the right wing as Liam Williams plays full-back. Gareth Anscombe starts at fly-half, with Sam Warburton re-installed as captain as he moves to open-side flanker. Nicky Smith, Scott Baldwin and Samson Lee make up a new front-row after they all started on the bench against Argentina last weekend. ‘We have made a number of changes but have named a very experienced side,’ said Head Coach Rob Howley. ‘Continuity and momentum is important, hence keeping the likes of Alun Wyn, Jon Davies and Sam (Warburton) in the side, but it is also an opportunity for players, who were disappointed against Australia, to start and for players who have been pushing on selection. ‘We have made a change with Liam (Williams) moving to full-back and Leigh (Halfpenny) onto the wing. ‘Leigh has done well at full-back but we are giving an opportunity to Liam, it’s his favourable position, Leigh has played on the wing before they have trained well there and we want to have a look at what this option gives us. ‘Japan are a much changed side from the Rugby World Cup but Jamie (Joseph) is developing his team and their recent performances echo the dangers of the RWC with their ability to move the ball wide early and they are a great counter attacking team. ‘It’s important we look at our game and are clinical in what we want to do this weekend.’
