Dial 1922 to give suggestions for Page 3 of 64 Mann ki Baat www.mygov.in The Prime Minister emphasised that the historic mandate his Government received was for the mission of ending corruption and nepotism. He said we’re moving away from:

●Relation-based governance to System-based governance;

●From discretionary administration to policy-based administration;

●From random interference to technological intervention;

●From favouritism to level playing field;

●From informal economy to formal economy.

The PM said that digital technology helps in pushing for openness and transparency which are key factors in achieving this paradigm shift. He mentioned the relentless work that has gone into boosting the Indian economy to realise its full potential in the last two and a half years. Significant improvements are seen in macro-economic indicators like GDP growth, inflation, fiscal deficit, current account deficit as well as foreign investments. World Bank, IMF and other institutions have projected even better days ahead.

India, the world’s growth engine: During times of global slowdown, India is being seen as the global growth engine. In 2014-15, India contributed 12.5 per cent of global growth. Its contribution to global growth is 68% higher than its share of the world economy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed that creating a conducive climate for business and investment is his top priority. This is reflected in the pipeline of historic initiatives assembled that includes the Goods and Services Tax apart from already implemented reforms like the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, the National Company Law Tribunal, a new arbitration framework, a new IPR regime and new commercial courts.

Under this scheme, in the first year 1.5 crore poor households are being provided with deposit-free LPG connections and this target has been achieved with 4 months to spare. Significantly, the Prime Minister had inaugurated the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) at Ballia, Uttar Pradesh on 1st May, 2016. Even after about 70 years of independence, crores of women are still helplessly inhaling harmful smoke from smoky stoves while cooking. Prime Minister Narendra Modi started this scheme to give those poor women a smoke-free, healthy life. PMUY’s 3-year target is to extend this benefit of deposit-free LPG connection provision to 5 crore households with a total of Rs 8000 crore being set aside for this project. The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas will also be formally initiating work on this scheme in all the 7 North-Eastern states, from this April. The rate of implementation has clocked an amazing rate of 65,000 connections a day and 20 lakh connections a month.

An apt quote goes: You can take an Indian out of India but you cannot take India out of an Indian. This spirit of quintessential Indianness was on full display at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2017. This day is celebrated once in two years, to commemorate the return of the Mahatma as a Pravasi, from South Africa to India. This year, the 14th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas was organized on the 9th of January at Bengaluru. The Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, was the Chief Guest at the event, as part of his seven day visit to the Indian subcontinent. In his address, he said that he was a proud person of Indian origin with roots in and added that his father had a house in Madgaon and it is no coincidence that he is the first person of Indian origin to lead a European country. The convention is also a substantial channel to enable the Central and State governments to establish connect with the Indian diaspora. The celebrations concluded on Monday with President Pranab Mukherjee presenting the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awards.

Low retail inflation indicated an atmosphere of positivity in the affordability of many consumer goods spurring economic activity in India, making India one of the few bright spots of growth amidst a looming global economic slowdown. A 13-month high in IIP also showed a healthy trend in overall economic performance that could positively affect GDP forecasts and economic growth.

December 2016 marked a sharp rise in the number of people enrolling for Aadhaar, following demonetisation last November. The efforts of the Government to digitally empower citizens with knowledge and facilities also contributed to the 53% increase in Aadhaar enrolments. As the nation moves towards a cashless future, citizens are playing their part to strengthen the process and adhere to the fast changing face of Indian economy. In light of demonetisation, digital payments are steadily making their way as a safe and easy payment option. With Aadhaar slowly becoming mandatory for these payments, it is important to note that almost 98% adult population of India now owns Aadhaar cards. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) earlier started the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System, through which one can withdraw money from their bank account by linking it to their Aadhaar account. This is popularly used by banks’ business correspondents in rural areas to disburse and accept cash, using micro ATMs. Efforts are on to modify this system such that payments made through this method can be done without the use of credit or debit card, or even a smartphone.

In consonance with the Government’s stress on the tourism sector since tourism boosts the economic well being of India, there were 11% more tourists who chose India as their preferred holiday destination in 2016 than those in 2015. This growth outperformed the projected estimate of 4.5%. It may have been a contributory factor that 56.6% more tourists have used e-VISA scheme in December 2016, as compared to December 2015. The spike in e-VISA adoption was announced in a statement issued by the Ministry of Tourism on 11th January 2017. The Ministry also cited rise in the number of tourists to 10,79,696 in the calendar year of 2016 as against 4,45,300 in 2015. This high growth may be credited to e-Tourist Visa made accessible to 161 countries as compared to its earlier accessibility that was limited to 113 countries, an official statement by the Ministry of Tourism said. This scheme was also instrumental in getting a major influx of tourists at the most happening airports of India, with New Delhi Airport topping the list with a 36.6% share, followed by Mumbai Airport with 23.1% and Dabolim (Goa) Airport with 13.6%, among others during December 2016.

Madhya Pradesh set up its first bio methanation plant, equipped to release biogas sufficient to light streets or run other similar essentialities. It was inaugurated in Bhopal on 9th January, by the city mayor Alok Sharma. To be fuelled everyday by municipal solid waste, this facility will be fully functional in another fortnight. A demonstration was carried out at the launch to show how this waste-to-energy plant can churn out biogas to power the streetlights of Bittan Market. The biodegradable waste used to run this plant will be sourced mostly from the neighbouring vegetable marketplace and the adjoining colonies. The plant is capacitated to process four to five tonnes of segregated organic municipal solid waste in one day and generate biogas. Established as a component of the Bhopal Smart City project, the scheme is being hinged with the Swachh Bharat initiative. According to BMC’s evaluations, the area houses more than 50 hotels and 500 vegetable sellers, offering a perfect base to gather organic waste. This translates into a total output of 800 megatons of waste from the city every day, out of which 60% is organic or disposable, thus providing a rich source to generate alternate energy.
