We received a large donation of supplies from Staples. Please join us at Arlington Moose Lodge #1315, 5710 Scoville Street, Falls Church on 7 Aug from 11 AM – 2 PM. Our goal is to assemble 2,300 school supply kits for distribution to Fairfax County Public Schools students. Community volunteers are invited as this service opportunity is appropriate for middle/high school students and adults of all ages! After, stick around for a Bull Roast Lunch hosted by our long-time partner Moose Lodge. Please go to Sign Up Genius for opportunities to serve. (POC: Kate)

Save the Date: 9 Oct 2021, Bob’s Celebration of Life Susan informs us that Bob was a nature lover and he most enjoyed evening walks in the woods behind their house and around Royal Lake. He would come home from each walk to give the family a “Fish and Wildlife Report” to let them know that he had spotted a heron, hawk, baby ducks, baby geese, fox, toad, turtle, or beaver, for example. Given Bob’s love of our parkland a memorial fund has been set up in his memory through the Fairfax County Park Authority Foundation that is designated to benefit the Royal Lake Park. The family would be honored by contributions of any size made to this fund in memory of Bob. Please see the E-mail Susan sent on how you can contribute. Also, a celebration of life for Bob is planned for Saturday, 9 Oct in the afternoon. This will be an out-of-doors event with tent. Susan is planning the event as our “Have Fun” celebration of life in honor of the phrase that Bob always shared when Elizabeth, Elaine or Susan would leave the house. They are working with the Fairfax County Park Authority to hold the event next to Royal Lake. Please save the date. Additional details will be shared as planning progresses. (POC: Susan)

As we were shopping, I noticed someone wearing a Washington All-Star Game shirt. Turned out to be Juanita. It was good to see her. In the photo, I don’t know if she was happy to see me or was guarding her groceries.

Last Week’s Guests We were treated to a brief talk about the Managua, Nicaragua Rotary Club by visiting Rotarian Marcia Miranda. Why not invite someone to an upcoming meeting? It’s a great way to meet potential members and get involved. Bring them to Goodwin House for an in person experience or forward them the Zoom link.

Editor’s Prerogative: Nationals Update First, let’s answer last week’s trivia question. I had a photo of the moon over Nats Park on 20 Jul 2021. I asked How are the moon and the 20th of July related? The answer is man first foot on the moon on 20 Jul 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed during the Apollo 11 mission. It’s too bad our newer members never met Pierce Bates who worked at NASA. He had some stories about those men. A special thanks to Pam for providing the correct answer. I am saddened no one else even made a guess. Let’s try an easier question this week: Who is the Editor of the BXRC Warbler? I would like to see everyone provide an answer. Now as for the Nationals, this week has been one everyone would like to forget. First, the Nationals were swept in a three-game series to the last place . With that bad taste in their mouths, they went to Philadelphia to take on Bryce Harper (boo!) and the Phillies. I was out at an event Monday night. I put the radio on and heard the Nationals were winning. I went into the event and when I returned to my car about an hour later, I find out the Nationals lost in the bottom of the ninth, just like they did on Sunday. The Nats seemed to be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Tuesday saw the Nats bounce back. In the first inning, as soon as Trea Turner scored, he immediately came out of the game. Later, we found out he tested positive for COVID. Then on Wednesday, just before the game with the Phillies was scheduled to begin, it was postponed because 12 members of the Nationals, including four players tested positive for COVID. "Thus far, nobody has gotten very sick, which is a good thing. I do believe the vaccinations have helped that in a big way," Dave Martinez said Wednesday night. "Once again, I encourage people to get vaccinated. Like I said, it does help -- I'm seeing it firsthand. The guys that are getting sick, it's basically kind of a small head cold, but they're doing fine." The teams are expected to play a double header on Wednesday. Max Scherzer won game one. Also, I found out that former National Sammy Solis was named to the Olympic baseball team representing Mexico, where he is now pitching. Unfortunately, COVID also derailed Sammy’s Olympic dreams. Speaking to his father (who many of you know is a Rotarian that started an orphanage in South Africa that we have supported), he said Sammy was bummed but happy he was vaccinated as it could have been worse (again, another reason everyone should get the vaccine). All this news comes as the trading deadline is Friday. As I write this Thursday morning, the Nationals are 8 games out of first place and 11 games behind in the Wild Card race. They are also 8 games under .500 this season. With these statistics, news is swirling that the Nationals may be open to trading some of their star players. Max Scherzer is highly coveted by other several teams this season and he has said he would be willing to accept a trade to a contender. Other teams are asking for Trea Turner. I heard someone say that to owners baseball is nothing more than a business. They are thinking if I have a player someone else wants, what is the other team willing to trade. An example of a trade that paid dividends (big time) for a team was on 12 Aug 1987. The dealt pitcher Doyle Alexander to the for minor league pitcher . In the short-term, Alexander was a stud. In 11 starts for the Tigers, Alexander went 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA. His pitching helped the Tigers win the AL East in 1987 but the Tigers lost the ALCS to eventual World Series Champion Minnesota Twins. On the other hand, Smoltz was just a year out of high school and was sent to minor league Richmond for more seasoning while Alexander helped the Tigers to the division crown. In 1988, Smoltz debuted with the Braves and twenty seasons later, he has more than 200 wins, 150 saves, a Cy Young Award, and eight All-Star appearances. In 2015, Smoltz was named to the Hall of Fame. That was a trade that (eventually) helped both teams. I’m sure Braves fans said, “Why are we losing Doyle for a high school kid?” Nats fans may say the same thing about Max. I hope Max doesn’t leave but none of us can predict the future. If we could, my job would be a lot easier.
