GUNS

Republican Delegates are making it easier to possess concealed weapons and eliminating important training requirements.

Concealed Handguns; protective orders (HB1852) This bill eliminates the application and training requirements associated with concealed handgun permits for individuals that are issued a protective order. The bill perpetuates the dangerous fiction that the victims of domestic violence will be safer by arming themselves. It injects firearms into a volatile domestic violence situation, making that situation less safe, not more. Bill Co-Patron: . Passed by Republicans. VETOED by Governor. VETO Override by Republicans.

Victims of Domestic Violence; firearms safety or training course (HB1853) This bill requires the courts to provide petitioners of certain protective orders with a list of firearms safety or training courses. This promotes introducing a firearm into a volatile situation of domestic violence, which is more likely to result in tragedy than prevent it. Passed by Republicans. VETOED by Governor. VETO Override by Republicans.

Concealed Handgun Permits for persons on active military duty (HB1582) Allows any member of the armed services or VA National Guard who has completed basic training to carry a concealed handgun without a permit so long as he/she has a military ID. Drops age for concealed carry from 21 to 18 for military members. Reflects an incomplete understanding of weapons qualification practices in the military and inappropriately expands the number of people allowed to carry guns without a permit. Passed by Republicans. VETOED by Governor. VETO Override by Republicans.
