  • Keep Moving Forward 2019 Season Preview
Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club May 2019 Alumni Newsletter Volume 13 Issue 1 Keep Moving Forward 2019 Season Preview Last year was a fun and exciting season for the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers captured their second National League Central Division pennant by rallying to win the last eight regular season games, including a rare Game No. 163 over the Cubs, giving the organization the best record in the league at 96-67 and the No. 1 slot in the postseason. After sweeping the Rockies in the National League Division Series, the Brewers took the Dodgers to the brink in the NL Championship Series, falling one game shy of returning to the World Series for the first time since 1982. “From an organizational perspective, I was incredibly proud of how our organization presented itself throughout last season, and particularly on a national stage last October,” Brewers President – Baseball Operations and General Man- ager David Stearns said this spring. “I’m proud of how our players presented themselves and proud of how our fan base engaged with the team. We put ourselves on the national stage and we made everyone proud to be associated with the Brewers.” Now is the time to move forward. The Brewers are ready to turn the page and write a new chapter. There’s a big target on the Brewers’ back in 2019, particularly in one of the toughest divisions in all of baseball. But Stearns and company are prepared to do it all over again. “We know there is anticipation and we know there are expectations,” Stearns explained.

Milwaukee Brewers News Clips Thursday, February 11, 2016 MLB.com Post-GM life, Melvin keeping busy http://m.brewers.mlb.com/news/article/164186704/post-gm-life-doug-melvin-keeping-busy Post-GM life, Melvin keeping busy By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com | February 10, 2016 MILWAUKEE -- Doug Melvin has an idea to solve the designated hitter debate: Instead of taking the bat completely out of pitchers' hands, allow National League teams to designate a player on each bench to pinch-hit twice in a game. That would reduce the likelihood of a high-priced starting pitcher getting hurt swinging a bat and also help managers deal with benches squeezed by expanding bullpens, all while preserving some of the strategy unique to NL play. "That's my hybrid idea," Melvin said. "Offensive numbers for pitchers are worse than ever, and there's nothing more depressing than when you've got a rally going and all of a sudden, the pitcher comes up with the bases loaded, two outs and no chance. "I think the strategy of it could be pretty fun." It's the sort of out-of-the box idea that has long fascinated Melvin, a 63-year-old baseball lifer who finally has the time to mull such matters now that his cell phone stopped buzzing. Thursday marks six months since Melvin announced that he was stepping aside as general manager of the Brewers, a post he held for 13 seasons. Before that he spent seven seasons as GM of the Rangers. That adds up to 20 years in baseball's most nonstop job.

The additions of Murphy and Johnson had been previously reported. But Tunnell's return represented something of a surprise, since he was among the five Brewers coaches whose contracts were not renewed after the season. "We felt as though the pitching coach needed to be involved in the hiring of the bullpen coach, that there needed to be a strong relationship there," general manager David Stearns said. "Once we hired [Johnson], we went through the process along with a couple of other candidates, and we all felt very comfortable with Lee." In 2015, Milwaukee's bullpen led the National League in strikeouts (548) and ranked fifth in ERA (3.40) and fifth in opponents' batting average (.238). Tunnell will pair with Johnson, 44, who spent the past three seasons as the Cubs' Minor League pitching coordinator after 11 years as pitching coach at Vanderbilt University, where he helped six players develop into first-round Draft picks -- including David Price, the No.

That question seems to be dividing fans and executives alike as the Brewers brainstorm their options at these Winter Meetings. The same factors that make Lucroy the Brewers' most valuable remaining trade chip also form the basis for an argument he should stay. He ranked fourth in National League MVP balloting in 2014, before a dramatic dip in production during an injury-plagued 2015. He has one of the game's club-friendliest contracts, calling for a modest $4 million salary next season with a $5.25 million option for 2017.
