A Case Study in Kolar District, Karnataka State, India

Groundwater Monitoring and Management (Proceedings of the Dresden Symposium, March 1987). IAHS Publ. no. 173, 1990. A strategy for drought mitigation using groundwater: a case study in Kolar district, Karnataka State, India C. NAGANNA School of Earth Sciences, Bangalore University, Bangalore 560 056, India Y. LINGARAJU Department of Mines and Geology, Government of Karnataka, Bangalore, India Abstract Karnataka, one of the southern states of India, has an area of 192 204 km2; of this nearly one third is constantly affected by drought. Based on various factors responsible for causing drought conditions, the Kolar district has been identified as one of the chronically drought prone areas. Reviewing different drought mitigation strategies that are in vogue in India, one finds that there is a dominance of irrigation and associated dryland agricultural programmes. These measures involve only the utilization of surface water. Through an analysis of the physiographic and geological conditions in the state, a new strategy is proposed to use the groundwater which is likely to be flowing along the east-west running lineament connecting the western water surplus areas to the water deficit areas of the east. To test this hypothesis a small basin in Kolar district was selected. Refining the lineament map already prepared by ground check within the basin selected, a number of sites were located along these lineaments. The average yield of these wells is 4 to 5 times higher than the average yield of the wells in the basin outside the lineament. Since some of these lineaments cut the water divide and extend up to the water surplus west, it is inferred that there is a flow of water across the water divide from the west and by properly managing the supply of water from these wells situated on the lineament, a permanent solution can be worked out for drought mitigation.

Case of Tomato Marketing in Kolar Mandi of Karnataka State, India

Ceteris Paribus in Agricultural Marketing: Need for Focus on Functional Aspects – Case of Tomato Marketing in Kolar Mandi of Karnataka State, India A. Muniyappa¹; P. Pethandlahalli Shivaraj²; R. Pethandlahalli Shivaraj² 1: COLLEGE OF HORTICULTURE, BENGALURU, UNIVERSITY OF HORTICULTURAL SCIENCES, BAGALKOT, AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, India, 2: COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE, BANGALORE, UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES, BANGALORE, AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, India Corresponding author email: [email protected] Abstract: Despite over 60 years of history, the problems of agricultural marketing in India are either persisting since independence or mutated into newer forms, while newer problems have crept in. Majority of farmers still subscribe to the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) as their most accessible channel to sell their produce. The present study was undertaken in Kolar APMC market of Karnataka state, India and used both primary and secondary data. The present study empirically prove that tomato arrival in market is underreported, which could give false signals to policy makers and thus lead to over production, market inefficiency and welfare loss to farmers, market and state as well. Recording detailed data by quality or grade would make it more useful and relevant. The causes and repercussions of underreporting and some of the functional aspects of market are discussed. Prioritization of market development activities, use of qualified manpower, automation, etc. are some of the issues to be addressed. There is a need to study the repurcussions of simultaneous auction, rate of market fee, modalities of financing by market intermediaries to create win-win situation for all stakeholders. Acknowledegment: Authors acknowledge the final year bachelor degree students of the College of Horticulture, Kolar (2015-16) for providing their assistance in data collection.

There are varying accounts as to how the t:.wn got its name and three _of them are narrated below. According to a legend, Arjuna, son of Kritavirya, also called Kartaviryarjuna to distinguish him from Arjuna of Mahabharata fame, was ruling over a kingdom which included the Kolar a:.rea. This king had a boon conferred on him by sage Dl'.hltatraya, which gave him a thous~md arms and other mighty powers with which he oppressed both human beings and Devatas. Kartaviryarjuna is said to have humbled even Ravana, the mighty king of Lanka, by seizing and tying him up. About this time lived sage Jamadagni (nephew of Vishwamitra), who had married Renuka, daughter of the king Prasenajit. The couple had five sons, the last of whom was Parashurama or Rama with the axe. Sage Jamadagni had in his care Surabhi, the celestial cow of plenty given to him by Indra, which had the miraculous power to ,give all tltat was asked for. Karttwiryarjuna in one of his hunting expeditions chanced to visit the ashrama of Jamadagni and the sage regaled him in such a magnificent manner that his curiosity was roused and he was not satisfied till he learnt the secret about the heavenly animal and its powers. Avarice took l10ld of king Kartavir~ yarjuna and he demanded the cow for himsel:t.

The mango value chain is analysed in-depth to understand the market choices of farmers and the role of market intermediaries and is based on data collected from a primary survey of 131 farmers. The study uses an instrumental variable approach to model the profitability of farmers as a function of market awareness, distance from markets, farming practices, and control variables. It finds that in addition to age and education, distance to markets and farming practices are significant factors influencing the profitability of mango cultivators. Just when the 'work was about to be taken on hand accordingly, the Prime Minister happened to announce in Parliament that a High Power Commission was shortly to be appointed to go into the qUt'stion of reorganisation of States. Since this meant that sooner or later tht're would be a demand for village wise language nata, at least in respect of bilingual areas in the State, I sought the permission of the Deputy Regis trar General to extract the language figures simultaneously with the extraction of figures for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
