NEW IDEAS FOR CRAFT GROUP ACTIVITIES

 Felting

What is it? Handmade felt is a non-woven fabric. it consists of tangled wool fibres that are matted together in all directions to form a dense fabric.

How is it made? Felt is made by hand laying loose wool fibres in overlapping layers. the wool is then covered with a net and wet down with warm soapy water. the wool is at first gently rubbed then rolled. This enables the wool fibres to get to know each other. Over a period of time the wool is repeatedly rubbed and rolled which facilitates the wool fibres to mat together and shrink. eventually this process produces a dense mat of fibres called felt.

How durable is it? The process produces a felt which is not only durable but maintains its shape, is washable, dirt resistant, water repellent, insulates against both cold and heat and is 100% biodegradable, when properly cared for treasured felt pieces can give you many years of wear and pleasure.

 Candle wicking or applique is a form of that traditionally uses an unbleached cotton thread on a piece of unbleached muslin. It gets its name from the nature of the soft spun cot- ton thread, which was braided then used to form the wick for candles. Motifs are created us- ing a variety of traditional embroidery stitches as well as a tufted stitch. Subject matter is usu- ally taken from nature - flowers, insects, pine trees, and so on, Other traditional motifs resem- ble Dutch or Colonial American designs. Modern designs include colored floss embroidery with the traditional white on white stitching.

Candlewicking uses the colonial knot and other embroidery stitches to create a design. Tradi- tional Candlewicking is done on unbleached muslin with ecru-colored thread or floss. Loom- woven or machine-made candlewicks of the early 19th century are white bedcovers with de- signs created during the process by raising loops over a small twig or tool.

 Silk ribbon embroidery

Silk ribbon embroidery is a romantic, old art that uses ribbon, embroidery thread and perle cot- ton to work beautiful floral motifs and decorative stitch patterns by hand on garments and ac- cessories.

The antique quality of this form or embroidery can be used to embellish crazy quilted bags, and purses, as well as contemporary garments. Silk ribbon embroidery is easy and fun to do, even a novice embroider can create elegant floral arrangements and beautiful patterns with some simple stiches.

Just five basic stitches, used alone or in various combinations, can create a large array of flo- ral motifs and stitch patterns. The ribbon stitch is for ribbon only, but the lazy daisy, , French knot and stem stitch can be made with ribbon or thread.

These workshops are planned for the Bendoc Resource Centre. All materials provided for a small fee. Come and join in and learn new fun craft ideas. Contact the Centre on 02 6458 1402 for further details.
