In November 2017, After School Matters partnered with the University of Chicago’s France Chicago Center to send 15 teens and three instructors to Paris for eight days. The group explored the city and attended an interdisciplinary colloquium on the contributions of Chicagoans—particularly from the West and South Side communities—to our global society.

At the colloquium, teens deepened their understanding of the cultural impact African Americans from Chicago had on NEW TEEN-CENTRIC BUILDING ANNOUNCED ON the world. As part of the conference, the teens performed CHICAGO’S SOUTH SIDE music by Chicago jazz, blues and gospel artists, concluding with their rendition of “Sweet Home Chicago.” In June, After School Matters, Mayor and the Chicago Park District announced plans to develop a brand-new 24,000-square-foot programming space at Gately Park in Chicago’s Pullman community. This new building represents our third dedicated neighborhood space for Chicago teens with Gallery37 downtown and the Lutz Center in Belmont Cragin preceding it.

“The indoor track at Gately Park will create much-needed opportunities for the Pullman and Roseland communities to stay safe, to stay engaged and to stay on track to a brighter future. It will be because of After School Matters, there will be all other types of activities, and mentoring, to make sure that they are getting the academic support as well as the athletic support to achieve their dream.” — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel

This space will be housed within a new, world-class athleticfacility built by the Chicago Park District. After School Matters is enormously grateful to our Board Chair Mellody Hobson and the George “When I arrived in Paris, I felt like it was Lucas Family Foundation for their generous lead gift to make this new After School Matters space the beginning of new opportunities.” possible. This project is crucial to After School Matters’ longer-term growth strategy of replicating our — Quentin S., 17 model of dedicated teen programming spaces, particularly in underserved communities.
