Where Goes the Alliance after Trump The Hon Kim Beazley AC FAIIA former Australian Ambassador to the United States Thursday 21 July, 2016: 6pm for 6.20pm – 7.30pm at Dyason House, 124 Jolimont Road, East Melbourne

With an unpredictable and unconventional primary season for both the Democratic and Republican parties continuing, Australia’s former ambassador to the US, the Hon Kim Beazley AC FAIIA, will offer his insights on who may succeed Barack Obama come November. AIIA Victoria’s event coincides with the 2016 Republican National Convention (18-21 July), which in its lead-up is facing protest and efforts among a number of Republican delegates to change the convention rules in order to include a 'conscience clause' which would allow delegates bound to Donald Trump to vote against him. This year’s presidential contest between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is expected to be the “most harshly fought” in years. Mr Beazley will draw on his wide experience to shed light on how the vagaries of the US Electoral College system have allowed Donald Trump to become the presumptive Republican nominee against all expectations. What may be the long-term consequences of Mr Trump’s run? And what does the election mean for the global political order and liberal democracy in the 21st century? AIIA Victoria is delighted to welcome Kim Beazley to discuss his views on the upcoming US election, tensions within the Republican Party, and wider implications for US foreign policy. The Hon Kim Beazley AC FAIIA was Australian Ambassador to the United States from 2010 until January 2016, and is a former leader of the . Mr Beazley is now the national president of the Australian Institute of International Affairs, a senior fellow at the USAsia Centre and has previously served as Minister for Defence as well as Deputy Prime Minister of Australia.
