Dear friends in Christ,

A few weeks ago, it was announced that I would be leaving St. Andrew’s and moving to St. Anthony’s in Florence to succeed as pastor as Fr. Robert Morey is retiring. Last week, we announced that this decision had changed, and that I will remain here at St. Andrew’s and be made pastor. I want to thank everyone for all your heartfelt expressions of gratitude and encouragement offered to me during the time we thought I would be leaving. The priest is first and foremost guided by the command of Christ to go out into the world and preach the Good News, in season and out, whether the message is well received or otherwise, whether his efforts are appreciated or not. That is always the touchstone by which a priest’s ministry is known to be authentic: does he act in the person of Christ to share the saving Gospel of Christ? Answering this question is always how a priest knows whether he is doing his job or not. Still, it is a great encouragement when the people of express their appreciation of a priest’s efforts, and of course it is one of the fruits that we should expect from the ministry of faithful priests, that faithful people are loving and grateful. And so, I thank everyone who reached out to let me know that they have found my ministry and presence here to be of spiritual benefit for themselves, their families, and our parish as a whole.

The life of a parish should of course be characterized by a sense of peace and continuity. We are a community grounded in the Eternal Word, which is to say we are grounded in eternal truth, in things that do not and cannot change. And so, with this rock as our foundation, we should be a people of peace, trusting that God is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. But of course, we are also a human society living in a fallen world characterized by change and uncertainty. One of the ways this change and uncertainty manifests is the coming and going of pastors and priests. While we always know that it is Christ the High Priest who acts through the ministry of every priest, nevertheless, the transition from one pastor to another can be a challenging time. For this reason, pastors often remain in the same parish for many years at a time, and there are a number of pastors in our diocese who have been in place for twenty years or more. This can help to cultivate in the people a deep sense of peace and continuity regarding the spiritual life of their parish. Think of the great comfort it can be to a family to have the same priest baptize, confirm, and then witness the marriage of all their children! This helps show forth the Church as a true Body in Christ, a true and enduring family, which does not sunder or disperse for any cause.

But there is a great challenge to providing this kind of pastoral continuity: the shortage of priests. There are well-over one hundred parishes and missions here in the Diocese of Charleston, not to mention the many positions within the chancery, as well as our hospitals and prisons that need the ministry of priests. When there are sufficient priests, upon the retirement or passing of a pastor, there will be a number of younger priests ready to move into the position. With an insufficient number of priests, filling this position becomes more difficult, and sometimes may require the transfer of a pastor (or several) from one parish to another.

Simply put, if we want pastoral continuity in our parishes, we need a sufficient number of priests. So, let us pray for all our seminarians, and for all the young men who are now being called to serve God in the Sacred Priesthood, that they will be responsive to that call, persevering in faith and obedience, and humble in their service.
