Brazil-Norway bilateral trade increased 29% in 2010 to USD 1.42 million , while exports of goods from Brazil grew 18%. Among the Nordic countries, the Norwegian market is consolidating itself as the most important destination for Brazilian exports. Brazil continued in 2010 as Norway's main trading partner in Latin America. Total bilateral trade stood at USD 1.42 billion, against USD 1.1 billion in 2009.

New record achieved in trade with Iceland. In regards to the commercial exchange between Brazil and Iceland, a new record of USD 264.6 million was achieved by Brazilian exports in 2010, roughly double of the amount registered in 2009 (USD 132.4 million). The significant growth of Brazilian exports to Iceland in the last three years is due mainly to the supply of alumina to the Icelandic industry.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff took office on 1 January. The first female president of Brazil is 62 years old and an economist. Her work, political and managerial skills became widely renowned under President Lula´s government when she served as the Minister of Mines and Energy and as the Chief of Staff of the President. Ms Rousseff led key actions undertaken by the executive branch within the framework of the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC). She also coordinated the proposal of the new regime for governing the exploration of the pre-salt layer oil deposits. During Brazil’s military regime, when the constitutional rights of Brazilians were suspended, Ms Rousseff took part in resistance movements against the dictatorship.

Minister of Trade and Industry to visit Brazil with large business delegation. The ministerial mission will take place on the 16 to 19 February 2011. The Norwegian minister will meet authorities and the business community in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santos, Belém (where Vale and Hydro hold their largest joint venture: Alunorte) and Brasília. The Norwegian minister will open seminars on maritime transportation and offshore logistics, maritime competence building, tunneling and underground infrastructure and cooperation in technology and innovation. The business programme also features meetings in BNDES, PETROBRAS and the oil company’s Research Center CENPES.

1 Inauguration of the Honorary Consulate in Trondheim. On 31 January the Ambassador of Brazil Sérgio Eduardo Moreira Lima will open the new Honorary Consulate of Brazil in Trondheim. The new consul will be Mr. Marius Maske, well-known business man in the region, director of the Maske Group. During his stay in Trondheim the Ambassador will be received by the Mayor of the city and will visit the local Chamber of Commerce and give a lecture at the University (NTNU).

Norwegian Strategy on Brazil. Following public meetings on cooperation in environmental matters and on trade and investments, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted with the Norwegian Peacebuilding Centre (NOREF) on 18 January a seminar on cooperation in global issues: ´Brazil in a Changing Global Order - An emerging power of the 21st Century´. The event was opened by State Secretary Espen Barth Eide and introduced presentations by Brazilian scholars Paulo Sotero (Wilson Center), Monica Hirst (Di Tella University) and Alcides Costa Vaz (University of Brasília). Debate panelists also included Jan Egeland (Director of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs - NUPI) and Kristian Berg Harpviken (Director of the Peace Research Institute – PRIO), in the presence of the Ambassador of Brazil. Various dimensions of Brazil’s foreign policy were discussed: regional and international cooperation, Brazil’s role in the established multilateral system and in fora such as the G20, the relationship with other emerging powers, and its relationship with Norway.

Brazil at the Maritime Conference in Haugesund. On 9 February, Minister Counsellor Paulo Guimarães will open the panel of the Haugesundkonferanse “Global prospects for the Norwegian maritime industry” with a presentation on the opportunities of business and investment in Brazil, followed by DOF, one of the largest service providers and operators of offshore vessels in the Brazilian oil and gas platform through its subsidiary NORSKAN.

Brazilian port delegation visited Stavanger On November 10th a Brazilian delegation visited the port of Risavika outside Stavanger to learn about Norwegian competence in developing and operating commercial ports. The background for the visit is the planned investments in ports and related infrastructure both for general cargo and offshore support services. The visit was organized by Greater Stavanger with BNCC as support. The delegation comprised officials from federal and state governments, port companies, Petrobras and agents.

Tourism Fair 2010 highlighted new global events in Brazil . The Embassy of Brazil and the Brazilian Tourism Board (EMBRATUR) managed a stand in the Tourism Fair “Reiseliv 2011” with the presence of the manager for promotion of the Nordic countries of EMBRATUR, as well as the Tourism Office of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, the Brazilian airline TAM, TAP airlines and the tour operators, Brasilspesialisten and Dreamtravel. Brazil becomes a must-go destination in the next years as the country will host the Football World Cup in 2014 and the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Farewell luncheon to H.E. Ambassador Sergio Eduardo Moreira Lima. The Brazilian Norwegian Chamber of Commerce invites to a farewell luncheon Monday, February 7th at 12:00 in the Shippingklubben, Haakon VIIs gt.1 to honour the Brazilian Ambassador to Norway H.E. Sergio E. Moreira Lima who will be leaving Norway for a new posting. In connection with the luncheon the Ambassador will give a review of the status of the relationship between Brazil and Norway.
