When Alexey Kuzmin joined the coaching staff of World Champion Anatoly Karpov in the s he started analysing the Zaitsev System, and later continued his investigations as a second of Alexander Morozevich. For this book he has The Zaitsev System: Fresh Ideas and New Weapons for Black in the Ruy Lopez and improved his analysis, and found countless innovations that change the assessments of many lines. One of the drawbacks of the Zaitsev, some feel, is that White, if he wishes, can make a draw by repetition early on. To avoid this possibility, Kuzmin presents a brand-new weapon, which he calls the Saratov Variation, based on an early exchange on d4, that was never played by either Karpov or Morozevich. Kuzmin has written a practical guide for Black with extensive verbal explanations of the strategic ideas for both sides. His lucid style combined with ground-breaking analysis has resulted in a unique chess opening book: a guide that is suited for both The Zaitsev System: Fresh Ideas and New Weapons for Black in the Ruy Lopez players and Grandmasters. Igor Zaitsev himself wrote a special introduction. Alexey Kuzmin is a Russian Grandmaster and a prolific chess author. Wie oben schon kurz angesprochen hat Kuzmin The Zaitsev System: Fresh Ideas and New Weapons for Black in the Ruy Lopez Material aus der Sicht von Schwarz zusammengestellt. Sofia: Chess Stars, In recent years, however, Double e-pawn openings were nearly ubiquitous at the recent World Championship, and a quick study of eight recent leading tournaments revealed a correlation between average participant rating and frequency of 1. Super-GMs appear to prefer solidity with the Black pieces when playing their peers. The Spanish fits this bill rather nicely. Assuming you want to take up There have been a number of 1. We begin with the titles and databases that cover the Open Games. This is a well-researched and practical repertoire guide. Nf3 Nc6 3. The book uses complete games to carry the analysis, and each chapter begins with a theoretical overview. Ebook fans should be aware that it is available from the Everyman website in multiple formats. While Avrukh is justifiably famed as a top-level theoretician, I was surprised at how well he managed to explain positional ideas and move order nuances for class players. The analysis is current and concise, and Avrukh is generous with new ideas. The omission of the Evans and Four Knights does not help in that regard. Ntirlis is currently rated ICCF and trending upward. More specifically, I was underwhelmed by his last book, Playing the Frenchbecause some of the repertoire choices — the Tarrasch line with Qe2 h6 in particular — were, while theoretically sound, very difficult to play. The proposed lines, drawn from the Two Knights complex and Breyer, are certainly sharp and principled, but they are not outlandishly so. Ntirlis has read everything relevant, cites most of it, and distills the typical plans brilliantly. Still, the presence of the engine looms large in the analysis, and correspondence games are mentioned everywhere. This is a very advanced book, but for those looking for a one-stop solution to 1. Victor Bologan has also published a complete repertoire against 1. The priority here is to equalize… The second approach is quite the opposite… [it involves] detailed analyses [sic] of the acceptance of the sacrificed material in those gambits that I consider dubious. Clocking in at well over pages, these two books cover The Zaitsev System: Fresh Ideas and New Weapons for Black in the Ruy Lopez ground. Both the Two Knights and Italian are treated extensively, and almost every White try is answered with two and sometimes three repertoire choices.

He agreed to do so when urged by Viktor Chepizhnoi, the chess director of the “Physical Culture and Sport” publishing house. Chepizhnoi’s arguments were convincing, but the Champion already understood perfectly well that the moment had come: he had already collected and classified practically all the games he had ever played (they came to around two thousand). For roughly a quarter of them, annotations had been written, albeit in a compressed (“Informator”-style) arrangement. For this book Petrosian wanted to annotate roughly 30-40 more games; together with those published earlier, these would constitute the nucleus of the work.

THE CLASSIFIED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CHESS VARIANTS I once read a story about the discovery of a strange tribe somewhere in the Amazon basin. An eminent anthropologist recalls that there was some evidence that a space ship from Mars had landed in the area a millenium or two earlier. ‘Good heavens,’ exclaims the narrator, are you suggesting that this tribe are the descendants of Martians?’ ‘Certainly not,’ snaps the learned man, ‘they are the original Earth-people — it is we who are the Martians.’ Reflect that chess is but an imperfect variant of a game that was itself a variant of a germinal game whose origins lie somewhere in the darkness of time. I really miss the classical games. As a consequence, I have also included rapid games in my Survey, which normally I don’t do. So I was glad to see that Ivan Sokolov had decided to base his Survey on a classical game between two promising youngsters from the period just before the lockdown. It reminded me of the Karpov-Kasparov matches. This also goes for Krishnan Sasikiran’s contribution to Erwin l’Ami’s correspondence column. Just one small correction on his analysis: the move 9...e3 is generally attributed to Igor Zaitsev. However, as I have pointed out in my book The Longest Game, it was first mentioned by John Watson, back in 1979. We welcome Yu Yangyi as a contributor. He has been a top player for years, but we hardly ever saw any of his commentaries. His views are obviously very interesting. Another welcome to Zaur Tekeyev from Russia. He tackles an interesting option in the main line of the Caro-Kann. Of course there were some rapid games from the last months that were worthwhile. The best example is Magnus Carlsen’s victory over Anish Giri in the Semi-Tarrasch.
