In the article “The Horrors of Street Advertisements,” one writer lamented that “no one can avoid it.… It defaces the streets, and in time must debase the natural sense of colour, and destroy the natural pleasure in design.” For this observer, advertising was “grandiose in its ugliness,” and the advertiser’s only concern was with “bigness, bigness, bigness,” “crudity of colour” and “offensiveness of attitude.”[1] Another commentator added to this criticism with more specific complaints, describing the deficiencies in color, drawing, composition, and the subjects of advertisements in turn. Using adjectives such as garish, hideous, reckless, execrable and horrible, he concluded that advertisers did not aim to appeal to the intellect, but only aimed to attract the public’s attention. -

Mundella Papers Scope

Dates: 1861-1932 (also Leader Family correspondence 1848-1890) Level: Fonds Extent: 23 boxes Name of creator: Anthony John Mundella Administrative / biographical history: The content of the papers is mainly political, and consists largely of the correspondence of Mundella, a prominent Liberal M.P. of the later 19th century who attained Cabinet rank. Also included in the collection are letters, not involving Mundella, of the family of Robert Leader, acquired by Mundella’s daughter Maria Theresa who intended to write a biography of her father, and transcriptions by Maria Theresa of correspondence between Mundella and Robert Leader, John Daniel Leader and another Sheffield Liberal M.P., Henry Joseph Wilson. The collection does not include any of the business archives of Hine and Mundella. Anthony John Mundella (1825-1897) was born in Leicester of an Italian father and an English mother. After education at a National School he entered the hosiery trade, ultimately becoming a partner in the firm of Hine and Mundella of Nottingham. He became active in the political life of Nottingham, and after giving a series of public lectures in Sheffield was invited to contest the seat in the General Election of 1868. Mundella was Liberal M.P. for Sheffield from 1868 to 1885, and for the Brightside division of the Borough from November 1885 to his death in 1897. -

Read the text. 1 Living history Chatsworth House has been home to the same family since 1549. In that time the house has welcomed kings and queens, prime ministers and politicians, and more recently bands and film crews. The 12th Duke of Devonshire, Peregrine Cavendish, and his wife Amanda have lived at Chatsworth since 2006. The Duke inherited the house on the death of his father in 2004. He says: ‘My family has lived here for over 450 years. The estate has been passed down the Cavendish family for 15 generations, and I now have the pleasure and responsibility to look after it for the next generation.’ Visitors often see him walking through the house and garden when it is open to the public. Many people say it is the most beautiful house in England. It has nearly 300 rooms (with 17 staircases and 26 baths) and is set in 35,000 acres of land. It needs 500 staff to run. The art collection includes paintings by Raphael, van Dyck, and Rembrandt. The whole estate is worth about £500 million. It costs approximately £5m a year to run Chatsworth, so the house has been open to the paying public since 1949, and in 2010 there were around 600,000 visitors. -
Graves of Artists and Architects Buried There
Graves of architects and artists in the Chiswick Churchyard and Old Burial Ground A noteworthy feature of the burial ground associated with St Nicholas, Chiswick, is the remarkable number of graves of artists and architects buried there. This article records the graves of an important eighteenth-century architect and garden designer, a respected bricklayer and site manager, two well-regarded Victorian sculptors, and no fewer than six painters and printmakers. In comparison, I know of only one literary figure who was buried there: the maverick Italian poet and patriot, Ugo Foscolo (1778–1827). But perhaps he does not count, since his bones were exhumed in 1871 and returned to Italy for re-burial in Sta Croce, Florence. The churchyard harbours the tomb of only one theatrical figure, Charles Holland (1733–1769), but – as far as I am aware – of not one single composer. Two possible reasons for this bias in favour of the visual arts may be connected with two leading figures in the British eighteenth-century art world who were associated with St Nicholas, Chiswick. Lord Burlington (1694–1753) and William Hogarth (1697–1764) were close contemporaries, although they seldom if ever saw eye to eye. Lord Burlington was the architect of his ground- breaking Chiswick Villa, and he was also a celebrated aesthete and connoisseur. During highly profitable visits to Italy in the second decade, he amassed an important collection of Italian Renaissance and Baroque paintings. Chiswick Villa was designed in part specifically to display this collection, which enhanced Burlington’s status in the British art scene. His semi-permanent residence at Chiswick in the last 20 or so years of his life, and the inheritance of his estate by the Dukes of Devonshire from 1764, perhaps attracted other artists to the area, seeking aristocratic and royal patronage. -

The Edition Open Access (EOA) platform was founded to bring together publi- cation initiatives seeking to disseminate the results of scholarly work in a format that combines traditional publications with the digital medium. It currently hosts the open-access publications of the “Max Planck Research Library for the History and Development of Knowledge” (MPRL) and “Edition Open Sources” (EOS). EOA is open to host other open access initiatives similar in conception and spirit, in accordance with the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the sciences and humanities, which was launched by the Max Planck Society in 2003. By combining the advantages of traditional publications and the digital medium, the platform offers a new way of publishing research and of studying historical topics or current issues in relation to primary materials that are otherwise not easily available. The volumes are available both as printed books and as online open access publications. They are directed at scholars and students of various disciplines, and at a broader public interested in how science shapes our world. John Gibson and the Anglo-Italian Sculpture Market in Rome
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Loughborough University Institutional Repository John Gibson and the Anglo-Italian Sculpture Market in Rome: Letters, Sketches and Marble Alison Yarrington Tate Papers no.29 John Gibson established a hugely successful sculpture studio in Rome, and despite strong reasons to return to London, such as the cholera outbreaks in Rome in the 1830s, he remained steadfast in his allegiance to the city. His status and success in this intensely competitive environment was promoted through a sympathetic engagement with a wide variety of friends, fellow sculptors and patrons. This paper explores this method of engagement, notably through Gibson’s works for and correspondence with the 6th Duke of Devonshire. There is no place in Europe like Rome for the number of artists of different nations, there is no place where there is so much ambition of who shall produce the finest works – this concentration for fame keeps up the art and good taste. Here art is not a money making trade. You should make an effort to come here and we would go to the Vatican together.1 When John Gibson penned this letter to his friend and former fellow pupil John Barber Crouchley in early May 1837, his primary place of residence and the centre of his sculptural practice was firmly established in Rome, with his career on a firm upward trajectory towards success and recognition. By contrast, Crouchley, who had been prevented by his father from travelling abroad with Gibson when he left Liverpool in 1817, saw his ambitions as a sculptor subsequently fade. -

Main Activities • You will be assisting with the ‘day to day’ maintenance work in the gardens; primarily edging, weeding, planting, pruning, harvesting crops, leaf and grass collecting, and bulb planting. Desirable Qualities • A passion for horticulture and gardening. • Enjoy working in an outdoor situation and being part of a team. • To be reasonably physically fit (the role involves walking around, horticultural work and lifting regularly). • Have a basic knowledge of ornamental plants. Additional terms and information • We are looking for volunteers to help on a Wednesday and Friday from 10.30am to 3.30pm, with a half hour break for lunch.
