Board Room Communications

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Three Kings Day, Have a great whatever you celebrate and if you don’t celebrate anything just make it a good Monday morning. I hope that you receive something Coca-Cola related this holiday season. I remember the shock on some attendees faces when on my Wedding Day there was a slightly dented Coca-Cola toy taxi sitting on my gift table. (OK they were more shocked by the 4’ x 3’ velvet Elvis picture, but THAT’S another story) For me the Coke Taxi was MUCH more appreciated than the 3 toasters we got. I’ve posted a long message elsewhere in this newsletter. It’s an important read concerning future conventions and a MUST READ if you are joining us in Iowa which is looking like it will be one to remember for sure! Happy Collecting, Bill

It has been a busy fall in the VP district with Korea, Italy and Spain Chapters all hosting events. From all of the pictures posted from the events it looks like everyone had a wonderful time. One attendee at the Korea event posted “More than all the Coke items, the friendships made are price- less.” I think anyone who has been to a Chapter or National event would echo those sentiments. As 2017 draws to a close Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Seasons Greetings to all and best wishes to everyone for a happy and healthy 2018 filled with many more collecting stories. Elizabeth

In this Season of Giving many chapters have Christmas parties planned. If you are not already doing so, why not incorporate a donation to a local charity. Have a silent auction with all winning bids being donated or ask for donations for the Food Shelf or Toys for Tots. It’s a simple gesture that will make a big impact to those less fortunate than yourself. Also, if you have not received my latest update, please ask your Chapter Presi- dent to send it to you. Merry Christmas, Ann

In October we had the new Board’s first meeting in Bettendorf, the site of next year’s convention. I believe we accomplished a lot and I must say that I believe we have an excellent Board, and I look forward to working with everyone for the next two years! Remember to register early for Springtime in Atlanta and Smokeyfest in Pi- geon Forge, TN. If you need more information on either let me know. The Holidays are approaching fast and I know that means a lot of our mem- bers will be traveling to visit with family and friends, I would just like to take this opportunity to wish everyone safe travels and a Happy Holiday Season!

Until next time! Happy Collecting! Garry

The Coca-Cola Collectors News 4 December 2017 HISTORY farm was in ruins and Asa did his share of reclaim- ing the land and getting the farm working once again. At the same time Asa attended public school and supplemented his education with pharmaceuti- cal studies. At the age of twenty-one he went to Atlanta, GA and began work in a drug store and re- mained until November of 1873. It was at this time that his father died and he returned home to take charge of the family farm. When it was possible to leave the farm, he re- turned to Atlanta and in 1878 made his first start in business. Also in January of the same year, he mar- ried Lucy Elizabeth Howard, and they would have a total of five children: Charles, Asa Jr, Lucy, Wal- ter, and Wil- liam. (Lucy passed away on February 22, 1919 and Asa married Mary Ragin Asa Griggs Candler Little on June 1923.) By: Sharon Shanholtzer

Asa Griggs Candler was born on December 30, 1851 in Villa Rica, Georgia and was eighth of eleven children born to Samuel C. Candler and Martha Bernetta (Beall) Candler.

It was in April of 1888 that Asa first became con- nected with the manufacturing of Coca-Cola. He had begun buying portions of the Company in April when Walker, Candler & Company purchased the one third share held by John Pemberton for $550. Hartsfield suggested Candler’s former race track, and two years later, Candler negotiated a five-year, rent-free lease. The first hanger was built in 1926 by Doug Davis, and within months several other buildings were constructed. The track was kept open until 1911 by host- ing air races, motorcycle shows, and other events. The track was eventually shuttered, the grandstands were removed and the place was abandoned. Candler’s interest turned to other avenues and he was elected the 41st Mayor of Atlanta in 1916. During his administra- tion which ran to 1919, he balanced the city’s budget and helped in reconstruction of the city after much of Atlanta had been destroyed in the Great Fire of 1917. In 1919 he gave most of his stock in The Coca-Cola Company to his children. They later sold it to a group of investors led by . Asa Candler’s life had a huge influence on the city of Atlanta. From marketing and promotion, to car racing, the Atlanta Airport, and all the donations and business dealings he was involved with over his lifetime, he certainly left a mark in the pages of Atlanta’s history books. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a medium sized bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda until combined, set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugars at medium speed until smooth. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until incorporated. Add the Coca-Cola, 1 tablespoon at a time, until fully incorporated. Then add the flour mixture and mix at low speed until a smooth dough forms. Stir in the chocolate chips until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough. Use a tablespoon to scoop out the dough and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing the cookies about 3 inches apart from each other. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 14-16 minutes or until the cookies are very lightly golden around the edges. Remove from the oven and allow to cool until they’re warm enough to handle, then remove them from the baking sheet and serve.
