A CYCLEWAY TO KENSINGTON OLYMPIA A protected cycleway for people travelling by bike between Hammersmith and Hounslow is likely to reach consultation soon. The need for the cycleway is not hard to see. Between 2008 and 2011, Hounslow Borough had the second highest proportion of journeys made by bike of all outer boroughs. West London employers such as GSK and Discovery are actively pushing for better provision for people travelling to work by bike. Some employers, such as Heathrow Airport are also under pressure to show that the journeys of their employees are not exacerbating local air pollution issues. Air quality in west London is no better than in central London and cycleways are clearly a way of making travelling by bike a realistic option for those who would otherwise drive and pollute. Artists’ impression of initial designs for a Protected cycle lanes in central London have made travelling by bike attractive for people who would not otherwise have cycleway on Hammersmith gyratory chosen to travel this way. To reduce the number of people trying to get through West London by car, we need continuous protected cycleways here too that benefit from the cycling infrastructure expertise accumulating in Transport for London.

The section of cycleway through Hammersmith gyratory has already gone out to consultation and we are waiting to hear what next steps Transport for London will take. Design work on the rest of the route from is being done by TfL, borough representatives and a range of contractors.

The cycleway route is planned to follow the A315 through Hounslow, and then cross the A205 South Circular south of roundabout. The alignment will then follow Wellesley Road to Chiswick High Road. Wellesley Road is being handled as a Quietway design with filtered permeability to reduce through-motor- traffic speeds and volumes. From Chiswick High Road, the route will go through Hammersmith and Fulham using King Street, Hammersmith Gyratory and Hammersmith Road to the borough boundary at Olympia.

It is important that, if Brentford marina plans result in changes to Watermans Park, opportunities for allocating more space to cycling on the A315 are not missed.

Do you work locally? We’re building contacts with a range of businesses that see the need for cycleways for their employees getting to work. If your employer is backing the cycleway, please email us on [email protected]

REVISED CYCLEWAY PLANS FOR RD: CONSULTATION ENDS 3rd JUNE You may remember that Hounslow Council issued plans for a cycleway between Boston Manor Underground Station and the GSK complex back in 2014. The recent revised plan is for a bidirectional protected cycleway on the western side of Boston Manor Road. It includes plans for separation between the cycleway and bus stops. There are still places where cars can be driven over the cycleway at entrances to and car parking bays planned to be located between the cycleway and the properties opposite Manor Vale. We broadly support the plans, but please send in your concerns too. The consultation ends on 3rd June.
