A temple symbolizes the body of god. Hence, when we visit a temple we are actually merging with god. Our rishis and ancestors followed this traditional path to be one with god, and this was passed on to future generations. One should not neglect and ignore the opportunity to be part of building the temple which is the main source of Hindu spirituality.

Our ancestors have built many temples in . This temple will open the doors for the current generation, whose roots are firmly established in Canada, for spiritual enlight- enment as well as for attaining utmost comfort and peace in life.

I urge everyone to utilize the opportunity given to us by the temple governing body, by sponsoring every part and particle of the temple building, offering donations and loans, sponsoring poojas, etc.

BEGINNINGS OF A DREAM TEMPLE OFFICIALS

Mid-1990s: A few devotees began discussions on build- ing a temple in Canada similar to the one in Gu- Chief Priest and Thanthri ruvayur. Searched for a suitable parcel of land for three Brahmasree Kariannur Divakaran Nambudiri years. Land within the city limits of Brampton was expen- sive. Securing funds remained elusive. Priest Sree Erayoor Manoj Nambudiri On 16th July 1999 five devotees [Dr. Karunakaran Kutty, Bhaskaran Menon, Gopinathan Menon, Trichur Viswa- Board of Directors nathan, and Ram Vattompadam] registered a corpora- President tion. In August 1999, they bought a 10.2-acre parcel of Dr P Karunakaran Kutty land at the N. E. corner of Torbram and Countryside in Brampton. They offered a partnership in this venture to Vice President anyone interested; 24 like-minded devotees signed up as Gopinathan Menon share holders. Collectively they agreed to donate up to 2 acres of land free of cost for the construction of - Director vayur Temple as the pre-requisite for becoming a share Bhaskaran Menon holder. This land was zoned agricultural but designated for future use as “residential/commercial”, which could Executive Director include institutions including place of worship if so rec- Radhakrishnan Padiyath ommended during secondary planning. Asst. Executive Director Secondary planning had to be in place for the entire area T A Viswanathan before it could be developed and was expected to take two to three years. This did not materialise and development Directors was stalled due to lack of sufficient infrastructure. Ramanujam Vattompadam V P Divakaran GURUVAYURAPPAN TEMPLE OF BRAMPTON [GTB] was registered on 5th June 2002 with Charitable Manager status [Charity Registration No: 860244110RR0001] and Appukuttan Nair (Ph: 647 628 1520) permission to raise four million dollars to build the tem- ple. There was very little momentum for the next three Asst. Manager years. T. Sasi Gokuldas

TEMPORARY LOCATION

2006: A temporary location for starting the temple, a house, was donated by two devotees and we received preliminary blessings from the City of Caledon. Unfor- tunately, due to environmental and political factors and the Green Belt Legislation that soon ensued, the City of Caledon could not grant us the required permission to designate this building as a temple. We were allowed to use it as the residence of our priest and conduct poojas and other activities without attracting undue attention. The operations were kept at a low key and there were no highly visible signs. Prathishta at Caledon location
