Visual artist Tova Snyder conducted a visual arts residency at the center last summer. Writer David Surface was so moved by the paintings that he incorporated them into his poetry workshop, an approach known as Ekphrasis writing – challenging the participants to use the most abstract paintings as inspiration for their poems. 2014 jazz fest

White Plains Jazz Fest Returns with a Six-Day Festival of Music

by Gerald Lane After the success of last year’s Jazz Fest, this year’s festivities, presented by ArtsWestchester, the City of White Plains and White Plains BID, have been expanded to include more venues and performances. Now twice as long, the six-day festival, taking place from September 2 through 7, celebrates the finest Latin, smooth, and free-form styles of jazz from across the genre as performed by some of New York’s most skilled instrumentalists. Jazz lovers can enjoy the mellow, poetic stylings of The Duende Project at the White Plains Library, and a tribute to the music of Miles Davis at the White Plains Performing Arts Center. Classically trained vocalist Alysa Haas will bring her cabaret show to ArtsWestchester on September 4, followed by the tenor sax-led Gerry Malkin Jazz Collective on the next night. Venues for Jazz Fest events are all located in White Plains and include Elements restau- rant, White Plains Public Library, Grace Church, White Plains Performing Arts Center, and ArtsWestchester, as well as various outdoor sites. The events are either free or affordably priced, so music lovers from across the county can enjoy all that Jazz Fest has to offer. The massive celebration will go out with a bang, culminating in the Mamaroneck Avenue street festival on September 7 that will welcome back Lynette Washington & Dennis Bell Jazz NY and two-time Grammy Award-winning percussionist and bandleader Bobby Sanabria (performing this year with his nonet Ascensión). Artists new to Jazz Fest include the Hervé Alexandre Quintet, Curtis Winchester and Friends, and Mark Morganelli Jazz Forum Brazil Project with Monika Oliveira and Eddie Monteiro. Besides the catchy tunes, Ray Blue local eateries will offer a variety of foods to complement the music. This outdoor event will be an exciting last hurrah for a summer filled with art and "Music in the Air" (see page A6 for listings). For more info, visit: artsw.org/jazzfest.

A World All Her Own: Mandy Greer’s Ecstatic Moment

A variety of genres, including sculpture, photography and video coexist in the fantastical world created by Mandy Greer at the Hudson River Museum (HRM). Mandy Greer: The Ecstatic Moment, will remain on view through September 14. Greer repurposes ordi- nary discarded items to tell her story in an extraordinary way – by drawing from the influence of mythology and fairy tales. Glittering chandeliers, costumed figures and an overabundance of crocheted and sewn fabrics enrapture museum visitors. With a strong blend of personal life, environment and myth, Greer also incorporates community into her work. She organizes crocheting workshops for the public, then weaves participants’ stitches into her larger creations. Inspired by The Ecstatic Moment, HRM will host several “Fiber Friends” knitting/ crocheting workshops during the exhibi- tion. For more info, visit www.hrm.org.

A Canopy of Butterflies at Hammond Museum

The inspiration for the Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden’s new exhibition happens to be the very grounds on which the museum resides. Inhabited, a site-specific installation by Wennie Huang, is composed of arrangements of red pipe cleaners and cut paper inspired by elements of the Hammond’s gardens. Red pipe cleaners – their lace- like silhouettes inspired by trees – are installed along interior walls of the gallery. They wrap along the walls like a vine, while hundreds of individually hand-cut paper butterflies create an illusion of a canopy in place of leaves. Just like the lush florals and greenery of a garden, the installation will evolve gradually over the summer months. Inspiration is garnered from Hueng’s life as well. The intertwined pipe cleaners evoke memories of favorite childhood crafts and their color refers to the red velvet covers of her mother's treasured family photo albums from Taiwan. Inhabited remains on view through September 6. For more info, visit: www.hammondmuseum.org.
