I’m not sure that I will do a letter each issue, but I will for this one to introduce you to the Buzz and myself. 03 Inside Buzz/Concert The Buzz contains arts and entertainment information relevant to fellow Cal State Fullerton students. This semes- Calendar ter, I hope to focus on a lot of what’s happening at CSUF, such as any band performances, theatre shows, art shows, etc. I’m also going to stick with having movie and album reviews along with some other media-friendly words as well. 04 Snakes on a Plane Review For this issue, I chose to go big with Snakes on a Plane. Probably not the greatest movie of the summer, but hey, the hype that it received from the Internet and the creative advertising methods they used made it worthwhile. So if you 06 Preview Reviews/New DVD hate it, let me know. If you like it, you can also let me know. Getting feedback from readers would be great. Now that you know a little about what the Buzz is going to be about this semester, I’ll tell you a bit about 07 Panic Channel CD Review/ myself. This is my last semester at CSUF as I’m graduating this December. I’ll be getting my degree in journalism in hopes of having a career at a magazine. I would like it to be a well-known magazine, of course, but who knows what ASI Working Hard for will happen. I love going to shows, although I haven’t been in a long time. I love music so much and have an iPod CSUF filled with many different genres. I watch a lot of TV with the help of my TIVO and most of it is reality, but I have been watching more scripted shows more recently like Lost, 24 and Desperate Housewives. Of course, my favorite has to 08 Bootlegging Ripping the be The OC, although I think it will probably go downhill big this season. I love movies, mostly comedy and horror but Film pretty much everything else as well. AUG. 21, 2006 AUG. I’m going to try to bring a wide range of everything entertainment to the Buzz this semester and I hope you all enjoy it. THE KARLOVY VARY FESTIVAL TO HONOR ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR BARRY LEVINSON At this year’s Karlovy Vary festival, screenwriter-producer-director Barry Levinson, who won an Academy Award for Rain Man, will accept the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema. The Karlovy Vary festival continues its tradition of recognizing the most important personalities of world cinema, the likes of which include directors William Friedkin, Jerry Schatzberg, and Ken Loach, and screenwriter Paul Laverty. In his writing and directing capacity, Academy Award winner and five-time nominee Barry Levinson deftly combines personal stories with an often satirical look at society, and his movies have fundamentally influenced numerous young filmmakers. Barry Levinson established himself as a writer of successful television shows. With his onetime wife, Valerie Curtin, he then wrote the movie script for Norman Jewison’s courtroom drama …and justice for all (1979), which brought them an Oscar nomination. He debuted as a director with the comedy-drama Diner (1982), receiving his second Oscar nomination for the script. Ivan Král, a Czech musician based in the US, co- wrote the film music. Subsequent titles confirmed his reputation with critics and audiences: The Natural (1984) with Robert Redford, Tin Men (1987) with Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito, and Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) with Robin Williams. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the legendary picture Rain Man (1988), awarded four Oscars (e.g. Best Director for Barry Levinson) and numerous other honors, including the Golden Bear at the Berlinale and the David di Donatello for Best Foreign Film.

Reel Impact: Movies and TV Õat Changed History - "Õe China Syndrome" Screenwriters and lmmakers often impact society in ways never expected. Frank Deese explores the "The China Syndrome" - the lm that launched Hollywood's social activism - and the eect the lm had on the world's view of nuclear power plants. FRANK DEESE · SEP 24, 2020 Click to tweet this article to your friends and followers! As screenwriters, our work has the capability to reach millions, if not billions - and sometimes what we do actually shifts public opinion, shapes the decision-making of powerful leaders, perpetuates destructive myths, or unexpectedly enlightens the culture. It isn’t always “just entertainment.” Sometimes it’s history. Leo Szilard was irritated. Reading the newspaper in a London hotel on September 12, 1933, the great Hungarian physicist came across an article about a science conference he had not been invited to. Even more irritating was a section about Lord Ernest Rutherford – who famously fathered the “solar system” model of the atom – and his speech where he self-assuredly pronounced: “Anyone who expects a source of power from the transformation of these atoms is talking moonshine.” Stewing over the upper-class British arrogance, Szilard set o on a walk and set his mind to how Rutherford could be proven wrong – how energy might usefully be extracted from the atom. As he crossed the street at Southampton Row near the British Museum, he imagined that if a neutron particle were red at a heavy atomic nucleus, it would render the nucleus unstable, split it apart, release a lot of energy along with more neutrons shooting out to split more atomic nuclei releasing more and more energy and..

  • American International Pictures Retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Modern Art 50th Anniversary •JO NO. 47 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL PICTURES RETROSPECTIVE AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART The Department of Film of The Museum of Modern Art will present a retrospective exhibition of films from American International Pictures beginning July 26 and running through August 28, 1979. The 38 film retrospective, which coincides with the studio's 25th anniversary, was selected from the company's total production of more than 500 films, by Adrienne Mancia, Curator, and Larry Kardish, Associate Curator, of the Museum's Department of Film. The films, many in new 35mm prints, will be screened in the Museum's Roy and Niuta Titus Auditorium and, concurrent with the retro spective, a special installation of related film stills and posters will be on view in the adjacent Auditorium Gallery. "It's extraordinary to see how many filmmakers, writers and actors — now often referred to as 'the New Hollywood'—took their first creative steps at American International," commented Adrienne Mancia. "AIP was a good training ground; you had to work quickly and economically. Low budgets can force you to find fresh resources. There is a vitality and energy to these feisty films that capture a certain very American quality. I think these films are rich in information about our popular culture and we are delighted to have an opportunity to screen them." (more) II West 53 Street, New York, NY. 10019, 212-956-6100 Coble: Modernart NO. 47 Page 2 Represented in the retrospective are Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Woody Allen, Jack Nicholson, Annette Funicello, Peter Fonda, Richard Dreyfuss, Roger Corman, Ralph Bakshi, Brian De Palma, John Milius, Larry Cohen, Michael Schultz, Dennis Hopper, Michelle Phillips, Robert De Niro, Bruce Dern, Michael Landon, Charles Bronson, Mike Curb, Richard Rush, Tom Laughlin, Cher, Richard Pryor, and Christopher Jones.

Journal of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music doi:10.5429/2079-3871(2010)v1i1.9en Live Recollections: Uses of the Past in U.S. Concert Life Steve Waksman [email protected] Smith College Abstract As an institution, the concert has long been one of the central mechanisms through which a sense of musical history is constructed and conveyed to a contemporary listening audience. Examining concert programs and critical reviews, this paper will briefly survey U.S. concert life at three distinct moments: in the 1840s, when a conflict arose between virtuoso performance and an emerging classical canon; in the 1910s through 1930s, when early jazz concerts referenced the past to highlight the music’s progress over time; and in the late twentieth century, when rock festivals sought to reclaim a sense of liveness in an increasingly mediatized cultural landscape. keywords: concerts, canons, jazz, rock, virtuosity, history. 1 During the nineteenth century, a conflict arose regarding whether concert repertories should dwell more on the presentation of works from the past, or should concentrate on works of a more contemporary character. The notion that works of the past rather than the present should be the focus of concert life gained hold only gradually over the course of the nineteenth century; as it did, concerts in Europe and the U.S. assumed a more curatorial function, acting almost as a living museum of musical artifacts. While this emphasis on the musical past took hold most sharply in the sphere of “high” or classical music, it has become increasingly common in the popular sphere as well, although whether it fulfills the same function in each realm of musical life remains an open question.

feature inside track What’s the best way to make a classic rock album? For producer Eric Inside Track Valentine and guitarist Slash, there was only Secrets Of The Mix Engineers: one answer: use classic recording techniques and Eric Valentine vintage gear. Paul Tingen hen I first met Slash to talk about his solo album,” recalls “W Eric Valentine, “I immediately told him that the only way I wanted to do it was to approach it like a classic rock record: get great musicians, rehearse the songs properly, and record them on tape machines. There’s one particular vintage tape machine that I wanted to use for drums and bass, to get that classic ’60s rock sound, and I then wanted to use a more modern tape machine that can punch in and out for overdubs. My idea was to make it really simple, with a great drum sound and one guitar in one speaker and another guitar in the other speaker, so you can really hear performances. I didn’t want to hear just a wall of guitar sounds, I wanted to be able to hear Slash playing guitar. He seemed really excited about that.” Saul ‘Slash’ Hudson was excited enough to entrust Valentine with the engineering, mixing and production of his first genuine solo album. Simply named Slash, it hit same time being thoroughly modern. With listening to analogue. To my ears, digital number three in the US charts and made the Scully and Studer tape machines, an EMI stuff has an uncomfortable, buzzy high end top spot in many other nations.

  • Guitar World #11, Novembre 97
GUITAR WORLD #11, NOVEMBRE 97 SHOCK EXCHANGE par Alan Di Perna Jane's Addiction is back - if only temporarily - and they got Flea with 'em. Guitarist Dave Navarro and the righteous bass man rap about the good old days and their bad old ways. Dave Navarro and Flea are sitting together on the famous "sideways" rocking chair from the cover of Jane's Addiction's 1988 album, Nothing's Shocking. They're huddled together like two schoolboys on a bus, giggling, exchanging whispered jokes, setting up a force field of friendship to insulate them from the prying eye of the photographer's lens, the glaring floodlights and the coldly appraising gazes of assorted makeup artists, dressers, handlers and assistants. Navarro hates photo shoots. But Flea seems to welcome an opportunity to dress up like his newest heroes, Sixties black power militants the Black Panthers. He's even brought along a Panther uniform (black leather jacket, black turtleneck, black beret, wraparound shades) for Dave. When the world first saw the "sideways" rocking chair, it was, of course, holding a sculpture of Siamese twins, naked, female, created by Jane's Addiction leader Perry Farrell who set the figures' heads alight for the controversial Nothing's Shocking cover photo. Prepare to be shocked once more, because Farrell has now reconvened Jane's Addiction. The return of the band that instigated the alternative rock Nineties will be marked by a CD containing one brand new song and a slew of previously unreleased material, demos and live recordings from the first incarnation of Jane's Addiction.
