Liz Jump I can’t really believe that we are arrived at September. Autumn is upon us; Keats’ Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. It is without question my favourite season of the year. e heat of summer is gone, and the cold of winter not yet here. e changing colours of the foliage seem to bring a different view each time we step out, and the fruit trees hang heavy with fruit ripe for picking and ready to be eaten, or turned into puddings and jars of delicious jams and chutneys. I can never get through the season without hearing in my head the song my children used to sing at school, with the glorious lines e apples are ripe and the plums are red/the broad beans are sleeping in their blankety bed! I love the image of nature slowing down ready to hibernate and gather its energy ready for the call to rise again in Spring. I think we have much to learn from nature at this time. Humanity has a tendency to rush onwards, trying to fill each minute with not just Kipling’s 60 seconds worth of distance, but as many more as are possible. Where nature offers us shorter days and shows us how to rest and recuperate from the long days of summer, we find it hard to slow down and oen feel guilty for slowing our pace a little at times. But the seasons, we are told, were created by God, just as the Sabbath was. Space to rest clearly being shown to be just as important as time to be busy. In the Bible we oen see Jesus withdrawing from the busyness of life to regather his thoughts, his energy, and to spend time with God. His work of sharing the word of God, healing the sick, meeting with those in need was vital, but even he couldn’t do it without rest. In the recent strange times we have lived through, many said that one blessing they found in it all was the discovery that it was alright to be quiet, to rest, to let busyness stop for a time. And while that can’t happen all day, everyday – there are essentials of life that must happen – perhaps we can try to look at the natural world around us slowing down and take a leaf out of its book. To take time to refresh and recuperate. To slow down so that we can spend time with those we love, to deepen our relationships with each other and with God. To rest ourselves so that our energy is renewed for whatever work we are called to do. And as the nights draw in and temperatures drop, maybe it won’t just be the broad beans that enjoy their time in a blankety bed! Love and prayers Liz Our churches have a had a rather long enforced rest over the last few months, and we are enjoying beginning to bring them out of hibernation. We have some of our buildings open for private prayer now – Wroxham on Sundays and Wednesdays between 10am and 4pm; Hoveton St John at the same times on Tuesdays and Saturdays; Belaugh on a Wednesday 10- 4 and Tunstead has Saturdays between 11am and 4pm. Hoveton St Peter will open soon. We are now able to hold worship on a Sunday, following all COVID safe guidelines, and in September we will hold the following services. WROXHAM FLOWER CLUB We are very sorry to say that, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our meetings are cancelled until further notice. We hope that we will be able to meet again in the near future but, in the meantime, if you would like to contact us please ring Sue Lusted on 07926 059005 . Inputs by 15th Please 7 WROXHAM BURE vALLEY ROTARY CLUB We have continued to meet on a regular basis since July, using a mixture of Zoom electronic meetings and socially distanced meetings at Wroxham Barns in the outdoor covered courtyard, including an excellent update from the Norwich Food Bank, which we also plan to visit when circumstances allow. We also managed our annual beach barbecue evening near Sea Palling, which coincided with the warm August weather and saw several members take to the water. We do have some activities taking place going forward, so some dates for the diary! Hopefully some of you came and met us on Granary Staithe in Hoveton on 23 rd August when we collected for some of our key charities, including the Norwich Food Bank, Shelter Box, and End Polio Now. Our first big event since March takes place on 6 th September at Wroxham Barns (which incidentally is open with excellent Covid 19 safety measures in place) when in addition to all the usual Wroxham Barns attractions we will be staging a Classic Car Show. As many classic car shows this year have had to be cancelled we are delighted to be able to put on this special one-off event. There will be a prize for best in show on the day, and any classic car owners who are interested in attending, at the time of writing there remain a few spaces, so please contact Robin Baines on 07721 465647 for information. We will be collecting on the day for local rotary charities that we support, and remember 100% of all proceeds from our collections go directly to the charities concerned. Another planned activity is taking place on 26 th September also in Hoveton when we are holding a Work Day doing a general clean and tidy operation on Granary Staithe and Pocket Park along with Hoveton Parish Council. If anyone would like to join us in this worthwhile community project again please contact Robin Baines on the above number. Going forward we will continue to assess the situation as to what activities are possible but hopefully we can continue to gradually ease restrictions and increase activity while staying on top of the virus. Meantime please stay safe and remember in the true Rotary spirit of “Service above Self” we have members ready and willing to help out in the local community wherever the need arises. If you have something you think we can help with, or if you are interested in joining us, in the first instance please contact our president, Robin Baines, on 01603782920/07721465647

Unfortunately there will be no refreshments but hopefully a raffle. Don’t forget to bring along the best of your two geraniums given out in April and also the Monthly Bloom and 6 Fuchsias on a plate. I do hope you have all remained in good spirits and health, thank goodness for our gardening. At the time of writing we are desperate for some rain, I do hope that by the time you receive this notice the garden will be greener and fresher and look forward to seeing you all on the 9th October. gARDENINg TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER This is a nice time of year with plenty of colour still in the garden. There are cooler evenings and not so much watering is needed. Summer bedding should be giving plenty of colour so keep dead heading begonias, geraniums and marigolds for continued flowering. Also, dead head plants like dahlias, chrysanths and roses. With your perennials, trim stems that have flowered and pull away any dying leaves. If you haven’t trimmed your hedges like beech, leylandii and hornbeam, there is still time to do it now. Give your lonicera and privet their final cut. Now is the time to think about what spring bulbs you would like, while there is still a wide choice available. Our lawns this year have been stressed but they should start greening up soon. Later this month you can start thinking about some autumn lawn maintenance. In the veg area lift any remaining onions and shallots. Plant spring cabbage and sow overwintering onions. Keep picking beans and harvest courgettes and marrows. Lift your main crop potatoes. Take down any nets from bushes that have finished fruiting. If your apples are ready, start harvesting your early varieties. Pick blackberries, autumn raspberries and conference pears. If you don’t cover your pond in the summer, now is a good time to do so, ready for the autumn leaf drop. If you are thinking of changing your garden around during the autumn/winter, or replacing some plants, start getting some ideas together. Plan ahead. Plants to look out for this month are sedums, dahlias, sea holly, viburnum opulus (for its berries), stipa gigantea, ornamental grasses and rudbeckias. Enjoy your garden this month and remember, the nights are pulling in fast. Michael Ottaway, Chairman HORNINg BRIDgE CLUB The club will not be meeting until further notice due to the current social distancing rules. Inputs by 15th Please 9 WROXHAM AND HOvETON LIONS CLUB I hope this report finds you all well and managing to safe distance in a very busy Hoveton precinct. The shop has now been open since the 10 th Aug and we are coming to terms with the restricted but necessary way of working. I would like to thank all our customers who have adhered to the Government requirements to wear a Face covering in the shop, sanitised their hands, safe distanced and waited patiently until being allowed entry.

For those who regularly frequented our Tombola for the chance of wining a cuddly toy, I’m afraid we’ve had to postpone it’s opening until next year. We have yet to make a final decision as to whether our November craft fare will take place and if Santa is prepared to risk making his usual outing in December.

On 17 th Aug we met with members of the Bure Valley Rotary club in Wroxham Barns to tell them all about Lions Clubs International and explore ways of potentially working together on some of our larger fund raising projects. Hopefully, COVID-19 permitting, you will see both the Lions and Rotary members working together in the future.

You may have noticed that 2 benches had been removed from the Riverside path behind Massingham Butchers. These were benches we provided in memory of those members who have passed away. By the time you read this we will hopefully have replaced them as the old ones were beyond repair.

I’m sure you’ve had a good clear out during lock down and we’ll be happy to take any undamaged Bric a Brac, toys, books or clean clothing during shop opening times. Please do not leave anything outside the shop as it’s considered to be Fly-tipping and as such is unlawful.

Did you volunteer in some capacity during the lock down? If so you will know how rewarding it is. We are always on the lookout for volunteers in our shop or new members to join the worlds largest charitable organisation, If you are looking for new challenges in a friendly environment, we’ll be happy to give you more information. Please ring me on 01603781310, or our Membership Chairman Lion Lydia Spight on 07503221485. You can follow us on Facebook or our website. We, as always, look forward to hearing from you. Lion Mick Holden, President. BLUEBELLS Our monthly meetings on the first Thursday in the month are now postponed until further notice. Please keep yourselves safe and well, and when we are eventually free from this virus, we will have a celebration.

Social events are, of course, cancelled for now, although a get-together in September somewhere, with social distancing if necessary, has been suggested and we will try to do that, if possible and weather permitting. French Conversation is suspended for now and we shall review it later in the year, whenever we can get together again: the format does need changing so we’ll see what we can do. Meanwhile, our members will just have to practise their French by emailing or phoning their French friends, listening to French radio, online French courses, French books etc. Book Club members have had five successful Zoom meetings so far, the latest in August to discuss “The Godmother” by Hannelore Cayre, Marie’s choice. Marie did kindly offer her garden in Sutton for a meeting but most members still prefer to Zoom so we will remain like that for now. We will try and keep going and probably have to rely on Kindle books, Ebay etc. until our library reopens and can function normally again. Pat can supply more information for now on 01603 782375 or [email protected] For any more information please contact us, via Peter, on 01603 782733 or [email protected]

WROXHAM SOCIAL CLUB Unfortunately we are unable to set a date for opening the club for a while. Because of the social distancing and the way the club is set up, it would be impossible for members to be 2 metres apart. Most of our members come under the vulnerable category. The logistics of wiping every surface and toilets behind each member is not viable. We are doing our best to make the club a safe place and to keep everywhere sterile. I will update you as time goes on. We must be patient a little bit longer. The green is apparently looking really good. It’s a shame that it has not been played on this year. Bingo will have a new dimension too. Wait and see. Wishing everyone health and happiness and hope it is not too long before we can all meet up again. Rosemary Chair 01603 419811 or 07954670021

We are also grateful for the pleasure of laughing and chatting with our W.I. friends. The last two meetings broke up after 3 hours! Part of the entertainment is persuading member Rita Massingham to tell us more about Hoveton of yesteryear. Recently she regaled us with stories of dancing at the Hoveton Assembly Rooms the magnificent pantomimes Hoveton W.I. used to perform there. Our first post-Lockdown indoor meeting will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday 2 nd September in Hoveton Village Hall. Full social distancing precautions will be taken. Carolyn Williams 01692 630367 WROXHAM WI At the time of writing Wroxham WI is hoping to hold its first meeting since February. Weather permitting, this will be a socially distanced August garden party in a member’s beautiful garden. The committee has had to study many pages of National and Government advice to ensure everything done and offered would be in accordance with recommendations. In our brave new world “COVIG secure” are the new necessary buzz words. Many members are just looking forward to chatting with friends, all be it without the usual cuppa and refreshment. For some, at this time, it is a step too far to meet in a group and we shall look forward to welcoming them at a later date. It would seem that the meeting planned for Wednesday 16th September will also be outside and after that we shall see...... Already a great programme has been put together for 2021 The WI locally, nationally and countywide has so much catching up to do and will go from strength to strength. COUNCIL NEWS

WROXHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Parish Cemetery Work was completed last month on the first phase of the extension to the Parish Cemetery. A team from Simons Landscaping took just over two days to construct an extension of the existing central driveway and clear, flatten and seed the area. They also moved the old spoil heap from the existing cemetery and moved it into the new area. Our thanks to Councillor Peter Mantle who is the council lead on the cemetery for all his hard work on this important project.

One problem of so many visitors is the rubbish they create. The Friends Of Caen Meadow recently added signs by the entrance to the area with the simple message - if the bins are full take your litter home. Sadly it seems a great many visitors cannot read or decline to take any notice and piles of bags of rubbish are left by the overflowing bins. The Parish Council has quadrupled the bin capacity at Caen Meadow but it seems it is never enough when we have a spell of fine weather. The Council is now looking into the possibility of placing large roll top bin at the entrance to the Meadow.

Social Distancing Tourists seem to be back with a bang in Hoveton which has led to complaints about many of them ignoring social distancing regulations seemingly on the basis that they are “on holiday”. BBC Look East ran a report on this issue in mid August. Doesn’t seem much anyone can do about it other than wait for the tourist peak to pass.

Operation good Neighbour - Hoveton and Wroxham This scheme was set up to help residents in need during the worst of the Coronavirus lockdown. It was based on the existing Wroxham and Hoveton Good Neighbours Scheme and has now reverted back to that organisation as the pressing Covid need is over. However the scheme has been boosted by more than a dozen new volunteers who offered their services to OGN and have expressed a wish to carry on with the Good Neighbours and both parish councils and the Wroxham Benefice will now have representatives on it too.

Parish Councillor vacancies We currently have three vacancies on the council and we are actively looking for candidates to help spread the work load. The role is open to anyone over 18 who has resided in Wroxham for more than a year or who is on the electoral role. The only qualification needed is a lively interest in village affairs and a desire to make a difference. If you think you might like to join please contact Council Chairman Barry Fiske for an informal chat: [email protected]

Councillor Profile - Barry Fiske, Chairman Wroxham Parish Council In an occasional series we begin a range of profiles of the members of your Council. We begin with our chairman - Barry Fiske in his own words: “I joined the council in June 2016 and was elected Chairman in December that year. Maddy and I have lived in the village for forty two years. We have two children who grew up in the village and have three young grandsons, soon to be joined by our first granddaughter, due in September. Inputs by 15th Please 13 I had a career in chemical engineering predominantly associated with the global distribution of chemicals. I spent nearly forty years travelling and once retired soon had “itchy feet” and wanted to be involved in something, being not quite ready to retire completely

Over drinks one evening with a neighbour the idea of joining the parish council appealed. Having joined the council I very quickly became absorbed in its ethos, the potential of working in a team and the exciting future possibilities of projects to enhance the appeal of the village and its amenities. Chairmanship of the council soon followed and I and my team have been involved in many aspects of village development, with more in the pipeline.

By far and away the most rewarding aspect of the Councillor role has been meeting and exchanging ideas with the residents of Wroxham, trying to help or advise wherever possible.

It’s not always easy and can take up time but as I regularly say: ‘‘it’s one of the most rewarding hobbies I have ever had”

HOvETON PARISH COUNCIL

Annual Accounts 2019-2020 At Hoveton Parish Council’s meeting of 6 th July 2020, the Council approved its annual accounts for the financial year 2019-2020. The Parish Council’s inspection period, during which ‘public rights’ may be exercised, is Tuesday 1 st September 2020 to Monday 12 th October 2020 inclusive (the Council’s inspection period has been delayed this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

During this period, any person interested has the right to inspect and make copies of the accounting records for the financial year to which the audit relates and all books, deeds, contracts, bills, vouchers, receipts and other documents relating to those records. For the year ended 31 st March 2020, these documents will be available on reasonable notice by application to the Parish Clerk ([email protected] or 07572 349600). For more information, or to review the Parish Council’s financial documents for 2019-2020, please visit our website (https://hovetonparishcouncil.norfolkparishes.gov.uk/finance) or look on the parish noticeboards.

14 To Advertise Tel: 01603 782466 or e-mail [email protected] Parish Partnership Scheme As reported in July’s issue of the Bridge it is time to consider Norfolk County Council’s (NCC) Parish Partnership Scheme for 2021-2022. This annual process requires town and parish councils to submit ideas and bids (on a 50/50 basis) to NCC for small projects that could benefit local communities. Last month HPC asked residents for any ideas they might have for developing a small project to benefit the village but so far no suggestions have been received. The deadline for submissions is 4 th December 2020 so please put on your thinking caps but bear mind there is a cap of £25,000 on any bid.

Some schemes could include small lengths of formal footway, a trod, improved crossing facilities, improvements to public rights of way, part-time 20mph signs with flashing warning lights, outside schools, etc.

Don’t forget, any potholes, regular incidences of standing water/flooding, or mud on the roads, can be reported to Highways via Councillor Alex Howe ( [email protected] or 01603-783096), or directly by telephone on 0344 800 8020 or by email at https://www.norfolk.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/roads/report-a-problem or at https://www.fixmystreet.com/ For fly tipping then contact NNDC at https://www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/tasks/environmental-protection/report-fly-tipping , or at www.fixmystreet.com . Dog fouling can also be reported on Fixmystreet or to NNDC at https://www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/tasks/environmental-protection/report-dog-fouling/

Hoveton Flower Beds HPC is very lucky to have a small number of volunteers who give their time to keeping the flower beds in the village maintained and looking colourful. Sadly, one of our long standing volunteers has recently stood down for personal reasons and her contribution is sorely missed but nature endures and those of us who are left work hard at trying to build on the foundations already established. For some of us our expertise only revolves around our own gardens but if anyone would like to join our small group, and the learning curve we are on, then you would be very welcome. Please contact Councillor Alex Howe if interested. The beds we currently work around are on Granary Staithe, the two near the double roundabout, the one at the corner of Horning Road West and Tunstead Road, and the one at the top of Stalham Road near the bus stop. Our most recent volunteer has taken the bed near the bus stop in hand and is doing a wonderful job but the bed on Granary Staithe needs a little bit of taming, and some ideas for the Spring to be considered. Some of you may have seen the sad demise of the recently planted salvias on the two beds by the double roundabout. This was due to the very dry conditions during early August; drought tolerant plants are now being considered! Inputs by 15th Please 15 Social Distancing in Hoveton It can scarcely have passed notice that despite the helpful measures instigated by the District Council a large number of folk are ignoring social distancing guidelines within the village. HPC has no wish to level blame at any specific cohort but we all need to remember that coronavirus has not gone away. There are those local residents who have expressed their unwillingness to come into the village during these uncertain times and HPC recognises the difficulties local people are experiencing, with residents unable to access shops and local services due to the crowds. It is a completely unsatisfactory situation but one that seems to be beyond our control.

The most recent concern surrounds those who are visiting from areas in local lockdown and HPC shares those concerns. It has been suggested by some residents that bookings should not be taken from visitors from those areas and it may be that by the time this issue is published such measures will have been put in place. Sadly, at the time of writing, there seems to be little more that can be done to encourage folk to be more responsible short of putting oneself in harm’s way and inviting unpleasantness but with two weeks before publication who know what the situation will be in September!

The great British September Clean 2020 In early 2020, Keep Britain Tidy (KBT) launched the Great British Spring Clean but sadly, for reasons about which we are all aware, the clean-up had to be put on hold. KBT is now announcing the launch of the Great British September Clean.

Litter is a sore point for our community. Despite our excellent litter picker, James, he cannot be everywhere at once and if anyone feels like joining HPC on a KBT litter pick between 11 th and 27 th September then please contact Councillor Alex Howe, or check out KBT’s website at https://www.keepbritaintidy.org/get-involved/support-our-campaigns/great-british-spring-clean

HPC has previously acknowledged the litter picking done by residents and the benefit they provide to our community but in the spirit of working together it would be encouraging for the parish council to know who you are and to work as a team to monitor the amount and type of litter that is collected, and any hot spots which have been identified within the village.

HPC’s next meeting is on Monday 7 th September, held via Zoom. Or feel free to contact one of our existing councillors for a chat. More information about what’s involved can also be found on our website at http://hovetonparishcouncil.norfolkparishes.gov.uk.

A1151 Traffic Congestion & NCC Market Towns Network Improvement Strategy (MTNIS) Some of you may recall my mention of a Key Stakeholder meeting held in Sep 2018 which was called to explore ways in which the traffic capacity and congestion of the A1151 could be improved. This was grafted onto an existing highways planning task called MTNIS and a range of study work was agreed to be done which would involve key local stakeholders in developing proposals (not including a bypass!) which could be deliver improvements in the short to medium term. Roughly a year ago I chased its progress, having heard nothing, and was assured traffic survey data had been collected and was being analysed to help inform draft proposals. I was thus shocked to hear in Feb 20 that the proposals had been developed with no local input and that they were unlikely to gain local support. I, and other stakeholders, have protested loudly at the breaches of proper process and the ‘top down’ proposals. Worse still, NCC ignored nearly all the stakeholder requests and pressed ahead to add the proposals to the MNTIS which then become future policy. After multiple strong objections NCC relented and has now agreed to effectively do much of the work again but to involve local stakeholders in developing a wider set of proposals which would have local support. Work will now resume with Highways and include at least both County Cllrs and Hoveton & Wroxham Parish Councils taking an active part. I will update you as work progresses. The recent increase in holiday traffic arising from the recent trend for staycation holidays has emphasised the need for action.

Update on Foul Water Flooding in Lower and Upper Hoveton Networks . Many of you will know I have been pressing Anglian Water (AW) to investigate and rectify the causes of long standing foul water flooding in the lower Hoveton network and the more recent foul water flooding in the Grange Close area. For the past 9 months AW have effectively tried to disengage from my calls for action, which has been very frustrating. However, with the help of North Norfolk MP, Duncan Baker, we have now re-engaged AW at Regional Officer level to report investigation progress, come up with a plan (possibly involving the Environment Agency and NCC as the Local Lead Flood Authority) to address current problems and ensure any future major development doesn’t make the present situation worse. We met with AW on 11 Aug with the next meeting planned for mid Sep. We know there are no quick fixes but we need to be sure of the causes and agree the remedies which may require major infrastructure capacity improvements. I will keep you advised of progress.

Covid19 - Recovery to a New Normal . In recent months I have explained measures to develop new arrangements to allow businesses and resident’s activities to progressively return

Inputs by 15th Please 17 to a new normal that provides an appropriate degree of Covid security and comfort to people – be they residents or visitors. Currently, I am facilitating continuation of the good work and volunteers behind ‘Operation Good Neighbour’ to join the Wroxham & Hoveton Good Neighbour Scheme so that the enhanced level of community support capacity is retained in case of future Covid spikes or to meet other help needs in the community. It’s hoped the W&HGNS will be enlarged in early Sep and could take on wider volunteer community support roles. I am similarly supporting the return of the community care car scheme which has been suspended since the start of the Covid lock down. That too is hoped to be back in operation in Sep for the usual range of medical and dental appointment travel needs for patients unable to attend them by other means. More details of that will emerge separately in due course. Both developments are positive signs of recovery to ‘new norms’ of providing Covid secure voluntary support to the local community. If you are aware of anyone who may not be supported or is struggling to cope then please contact the nearest Local Co-ordination Centre at Stalham via [email protected] or the Wroxham & Hoveton Good Neighbour Scheme on 07501 362793. I am also aware there are other small informal neighbourhood arrangements in place that do the same valuable support work. Thanks must go to all those lending a helping hand. In the coming autumn and winter they will be more important in maintaining support in the community.

I welcome your views on these and any other issues. My contact details are: Tel 783885 or e mail: [email protected] or [email protected]. ARTICLES & PRESS RELEASES

MONDAY ART CLASSES AT BROADLAND YOUTH AND COMMUNITY CENTRE After an 18 week shutdown classes finally got going again in a reduced form on July 20th. Whilst numbers were well below normal, everyone who attended soon relaxed and enjoyed a bit of normality. We are lucky that the hall is fairly large and everyone can have their own table and practice safe social distancing. The new term proper will start on Monday September 14th. There are two classes every Monday, a morning one 10.30 -12.30pm and an afternoon one from 1.15 - 3.15 pm. Due to the current guidelines I’m planning to limit the classes to 15 students in each. By current estimates this will still allow us to accommodate a few new students who would like to start. The classes are suitable for beginners and also more established artists who wish to improve and develop their art. The general aim of the classes is to build artistic confidence and develop individual style in an uninhibited way. We are a friendly group and you would be most welcome if you wanted to come and join us. If you are interested in coming along or would just like to get some more information please give me a ring, either on my home number:- 01603 784319 or my mobile :- 07847030479. Chris Hutchins 18 To Advertise Tel: 01603 782466 or e-mail [email protected] WHERRY YACHT CHARTER CHARITABLE TRUST UPDATE Although all our scheduled sailings have had to be cancelled this year, we were delighted at the end of July to be able to take out our first charter party. They were a family group who hired two of our wherries, with skippers, for a cruise through the northern rivers. Then, at the start of August, we were able to take the Rt Revd Graham Usher, Bishop of Norwich from South Walsham staithe to St Benet’s Abbey for the annual open-air service. The service actually took place a week earlier than originally planned for this year and was for a handful of invited attendees only, due to the current Covid-19 restrictions. It was wonderful that the traditional service could go ahead, but disappointing that neither the public, nor our usual WYC passengers, could be there this time.

The annual service takes place at St Benet’s Abbey because King Henry VIII gave the Abbot of St Benet’s the position of Bishop of Norwich, in return for land owned by Norwich Cathedral. Although the site is now a ruin, the abbey was never formally dissolved, so to this day the Bishop of Norwich is also the Abbot of St Benet’s.

WYC first transported the Bishop of Norwich to St Benet’s Abbey for the open-air service in 1976 and has been doing so regularly ever since. Despite varying weather conditions, the Bishop has always been delivered on time (or nearly!). A selection of different wherries has been used over that period, but that first trip, like this year, was fittingly on our wherry yacht Olive. Pleasure wherry Hathor has featured quite often and in 2017 the Bishop’s party travelled aboard our largest and youngest (at a mere 93 years) wherry, Ardea, accompanied by wherry yacht Norada. At that time it was our former WYC Patron, the Rt Revd. Graham James who was Bishop of Norwich and Abbot of St Benet’s.

WYC is pleased to announce that the new Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd. Graham Usher has recently agreed to become the new Patron of WYC.

Bishop Graham said: “I am honoured and delighted to become a Patron of the Wherry Yacht Charter, building on the work of my predecessor in this area. Jesus spoke from a boat to the listening crowds and taught about the water of life. I hope that I will be able to encourage and enable others to enjoy and experience the spiritual connection that can be found through exploring the waters and landscape of the Norfolk Broads on one of your five beautiful wherries.”

WYC is happy to accept charter bookings until the end of September. If you would like to support our ongoing work please become a Friend of WYC by emailing [email protected] Inputs by 15th Please 19 1ST HOvETON & WROXHAM SCOUT gROUP The coronavirus pandemic has meant that all face-to-face Scouting activities have been suspended since mid March but the Group remains committed to seeing the return of meetings and activities at HQ as soon as it is safe and possible to do so. In the meantime, some members of the Group have taken part in online Scouting events, including The Great Indoors Weekender, Scouts in the Sky and BoxJam. Sadly, the annual Classic Car & Bike Show, which was scheduled for July and is the Group’s main fundraiser, had to be cancelled and all further fundraising activities, including the October Jumble Sale and November Bag Packing in Roys, have also been suspended. However, recycling continues and we welcome your donations of clothing, glass bottles, paper and cans at the ‘banks’ at our Scout HQ in Nobel Crescent (NR12 8SF). As Scouting is likely to be different in future, we are using this period of closure to make decisions about how the Group will operate. Thanks to the continuing diligence of the Executive Committee, the Group’s financial position remains stable, for the time being, but we cannot continue without support from volunteers, both as Leaders and also on our Committee. Many generations of young people have enjoyed Scouting in Wroxham and Hoveton since 1910. If you can help us to ensure our Group continues and would like to know more, please contact our Group Scout Leader, Terry, on 01692 630688.

THIS MONTH’S COvER The front cover this month depicts something that was variously described as "Wroxham, an Old Landmark" "Old Mill on the Bure" or "Humphrey's Mill". It wasn't so 'old' but for a few decades it was indeed a landmark on the river between Wroxham and Horning. It was one of the best known of the hundreds of little trestle windpumps pioneered by Dan England, the Ludham millwright, scattered across the Northern Broads in the latter half of the 19th and early 20th century. England probably got the idea from his visits to the Netherlands, where he saw a very simple design of Dutch windpump, the tjasker, consisting of a pair of sails coupled directly to an Archimedean screw which lifted water into a drainage channel. He refined the design, raising the 'patent' sails and fantail onto a short trestle. It was an immediate success, easy to build and maintain, portable if needed and practically automatic. Because of their light 'temporary' construction only two now remain: one at Upton Dyke, and the well-known Clayrack Mill from How Hill, currently dismantled in storage and awaiting restoration. Wroxham had at least two: Humphrey's Mill which stood on the riverbank off Beech Road just to the left of "The Willows" holiday cottage; and another near Bridge Broad on the other side of the railway line behind the library. At least one of these attracted the attention of local boys who would swim the river, climb the trestle and try to 'make the sails go round' much to the annoyance of the marshman. Personally I can't help thinking a working replica of a trestle mill on a site near the Bridge would have better commemorated the 'Capital of the Broads' than a lump of granite which is not native to the Broads - and probably not more expensive. With so much of Broadland's heritage vanishing and surviving windpumps going derelict, Wroxham Parish Council's 'art installation' is somehow suggestive of a 'vanity project' - especially as there are already two existing village signs forged by a famous and much-loved Wroxham man. Inputs by 15th Please 35 LEWIS ALBERT SLATER 1927-2020 Lewis was born in Horning on 1 March 1927. He was married to Annie for almost 57 years and the couple lived in Hoveton all of their married life. They raised a family of 5 children and rejoiced at the arrival of 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great, great-grandchild. Lewis had a strong connection with the local boating community, having worked as a marine engineer on pleasure craft on the Broads and seagoing fishing vessels for most of his life. Lewis suffered a stroke in September 2001 and bore his subsequent disability with stoicism and was determined to remain independent. However, the last few years had taken their toll and he moved to respite care in Ludham earlier this year. Unfortunately, the outbreak of Covid-19 necessitated him staying there when lockdown was instigated, and he passed away peacefully on 25 th May 2020.Due to current restrictions, a small family funeral was held, but a memorial service is planned for when restrictions are lifted. Grateful thanks to the Rev’d Tracy Jessop for all of her advice and support during this very sad time. Thanks to everyone for the kind words and messages of sympathy which were such a comfort to Annie and the family, there were too many to contact everyone individually. Annie would also like to thank the many people who gave help and support to the couple in the last years of Lewis’ life. The family would also like to thank everyone who kindly sent donations in his memory, which totalled £560 and will be shared, with some to the Priscilla Bacon Lodge and the majority to the Norman Lamb Mental Health and Welfare Fund. All future proceeds from Annie’s ever popular wayside stall, selling homemade jam and marmalade, plants and produce will also go to the Normal Lamb fund. 36 To Advertise Tel: 01603 782466 or e-mail [email protected] FORTHCOMINg EvENTS

MUSEUM OF THE BROADS September at the Museum of the Broads On 2 nd August, the Museum re-opened to visitors. It was lovely to welcome people back onto the site and onto both boats for the first time in 2020. In accordance with Government regulations, the numbers are limited, people are being asked to wear face coverings and keep their distance, and boat passengers are only seated within their family group or social bubble. Although things may look a bit different, the Museum is still bringing the stories of the Broads alive! (pictures on page 35) At the time of writing, the days the Museum is open are Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday each week. Full details are on the website, including the online booking of admission tickets and boat trips. Phone bookings may be possible on the day of the visit too. Unless the situation changes, the Museum will also be open for 2 of the National Heritage Open Days, on Sundays 13 and 20 September. Although entry will be free of charge, booking will be essential and there will be a cost for the boat trips. Again, please see the website. Stay safe, and all at the Museum hope to see you soon! DELIvERY OF THE BRIDgE With the print edition of The Bridge being delivered once again to every household in Wroxham, we are seeking two volunteers who can spare around 20 minutes each month to post the magazine through their neighbours’ letterboxes. This time the rounds are on both sides of the Norwich Road: from The Avenue to the lane by the former chapel on one side; and from The Hub to No. 178 on the other. We offer our sincere thanks to Marion Pardon, who has been delivering The Bridge from the very beginning, and to Mr and Mrs Houghton, of Charles Close, who have also stepped down from taking round the magazine. Please call Keith Turner at 01603 784719.
