Still, the guitarists continued to argue over who did what. There were two bigger problems for me. Rich and revealing, it bores into not only the disaster, addiction and death that haunted the band but also into the real relationship between Page and Plant, including how it was influenced by Page's interest in the occult. Not entirely, anyway. After countless references to Aleister Crowley as a "Satanist" by Zep's other biographers, Wall paints a far more accurate picture of the figure Page obsessed about in the 70's. The key, you say, feeling courageous, would be letting you have a free hand to do it the way you know it should be done. Plant and Jones had no problem after Zeppelin, but Page one feels, had his moment and is really trying to get that moment back. And I just played the melody and I went home and worked out the up tempo section. I would have given it four stars if it were not for the following two problems. Comprehensive and yet intimately detailed, When Giants Walked the Earth literally gets into the principals' heads to bring to life both an unforgettable band and an unrepeatable slice of rock history. And is it really possible that John Paul Jones has nothing to say, though many of the really interesting frills and ornaments are his? Apr 30, Ru rated it really liked it. Or does Mick Wall - and this is a hypothesis that I was leaning towards as I read on and on, and on - have an undeclared bias, i. Perhaps as a result of these, the effective period of Led Zeppelin was brief. Jun 04, Jim Goodrich rated it really liked it. He did a great arrangement of the song, but nevertheless it is surely not a song by "Jimmy Page' as it is credited on the label. This inspired them to create, I suppose, and so this guy Page, he went in search and came up with a very recondite philosophical backwater. I was totally going to do a parody of the chapter intros here, but the thought of actually trying to imitate second person narration made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. He was just a big curly-haired kid with a big curly- haired voice from somewhere up there in the Midlands. Then The Who began a tour, the Yardbirds began a tour and that was it. Why is it necessary to devote so many pages to this topic? Except one thing, which admittedly does make me rage twitch: John Bonham attempting to "force a flight attendant to have sex with him" should have been called exactly what it was, Mick Wall. It's not news to me, or anyone, that alcohol and drugs and groupies and craziness and out of control behavior were a thing that successful bands and people got involved with in the 70s. So Mote It Be, He was going to find a new singer, Page had said in his quiet but determined voice, find a new rhythm section too if needs be, and lead the band himself. It is the summer of , you are thirty-three and sick and tired of earning money for other fucking people. Mick Wall said in that he just felt there had never been a really serious book written about Zeppelin. But on the other hand you have these terrible lyrics by Robert Plant View all 4 comments. Or at least this Mick Wall does, this fellow from England who has also written or co-written definitive biographies of Ozzy, Bono and Iron Maiden. G drove, you and Chris, who was still making up his mind, sitting in the back, smoking cigarettes and fearing the worst, that it would all be a big waste of time. I always love Led Zeppelin but this book makes me ambiguous. I had so much empathy with the commentary in America at the time of Vietnam that I just wanted to be with Jack Casady and with Janis Joplin. I just wanted him to do whatever he felt was best for him at the time. And if you were against them, Peter Grant was against you — big time. I was content with Zeppelin just being there, a constant in the background of my life. Almost impossible to do back then, it is frankly out of the question now. Wall refuses to incorporate, nor even reference anything newer than the in his italicized prose. By the end of the book, the asides were more a nuisance than anything. This was the one and only time this ever happened When Giants Walked the Earth: A Biography of Led Zeppelin Writer Anyhow, one time it was just me and him, and on the ride back to my house he played Led Zeppelin IV the album is actually untitled, but commonly referred to as Led Zeppelin IV, this is also discussed in the book. Anyway, this is not my best music biography read so far compared to Dylan Jones work. The members of the band basically turned into animals and beasts on tour. I know that many of their songs were "inspired" by the work of others, and I'm all for it. Stuff that for a game of soldiers. Mick Wall breaks off into long, italicized passages where he pretends to have an imaginary conversation with each person. Then one day you finally got your own chance to show what you could do — though not as a singer. Want to Read saving…. It went over so well, in fact, that Paul arranged a few more bouts between Dr Death and the Count. G, who sits there at the steering wheel, staring at the traffic straight ahead, and simply nods his head. What you may not get enough of is the astonishment of the music. It was all right for guys like Don Arden and Mickie Most with their big houses and flash cars; they had seen enough of the back end in their careers to view the whole thing as simply another business deal that had gone down before moving straight onto the next one. And is it really possible that John Paul Jones has nothing to say, though many of the really interesting frills and ornaments are his? These sections will all be written in the second-person present and they will last much longer than anyone could possibly want! Once Led Zep was born, though, it was like the portal opening to a world you never knew existed. Zeppelin would not be nailed down. First, though, you need to put the pieces together, find the corners of the jigsaw. And all the rest of them, too. But the Yardbirds was already sort of old news by then, and I had my own band, Retaliation, that had just signed a record deal. The Mick Wall biography on the other hand, does mention some of the shameless and shameful behaviour of the band but also talks at length about the backgrounds and stories of the individual musicians that made the group and the unwinding of the binds that ended in the tragic death of Bo I did not read the more famous Hammer of the Gods biography because I heard it took too much vicarious pleasure in the revelling and partying of the Zep boys and did not talk enough about the music they produced. If they did get hurt it was an accident. Entwhistle would later swear blind it was he that had suggested the name but it was Moon that Page would later ask for his blessing to use the name. Of course the drugs fed into the music of Led Zeppelin. Because Jimmy Page has dabbled, studied, collected, and practiced teachings in the occult, Mick Wall is insistent upon discussing the occult as much as possible in the book What they are not is songwriters.

I stood there, waiting for him outside in a quad of buildings on a sunny afternoon. A cool breeze blew through the trees as “The Battle of Evermore” adults accompanied children on paths. That distracted me from my own nervousness at reuniting with him after a period of Atlantic estrangement. It wasn’t hard to tell from my father’s walk that it was him passing through the entrance archway into his community. He always had a familiar gait, and I was happy to see it again. In our recent chats, he sounded like the good man that was my father, not the person he had been all those years. He walked around with an oxygen tank, which I had heard about from my mom and sister, who were both on speaking terms with him by then. He didn’t look all bad though. His hair still looked wavy and silvery. Mostly, I was glad to see him and break bread.

My colleague and fellow scribe Tony Wilson had secured the precious black vinyl LP and dropped it onto the turntable, awaiting my reaction. We were immediately transfixed by the brash, bold sounds that fought their way out of the lo- fi speakers – Robert Plant’s screaming vocals, the eerie Hammond organ sounds of John Paul Jones, and Jimmy Page’s supreme guitar mastery. But amid the kaleidoscope of impressions, the drums were the primary element that set pulses racing.
