Welcome to the 37th MIEA Annual Dinner and the MIEA National Real Estate Awards 2014: It's a NIGHT OF RECOGNITION!
Congratulations to all the Winners.
As Awards Chairman, I am very happy to note that despite a challenging time in the Malaysian economy, notably in the property market sector, I am proud to announce that the number of participants for the MIEA National Real Estate Awards (NREA) actually went up with a record of 26, the highest entry since its inaugural launch. Real Estate Negotiators are very hardworking indeed, we are not participating in the economic down turn!
According to our Chief Judge Datuk Seri Fateh Iskandar, while we take notice of the quantitative results, we are particularly looking for innovative and unique ideas in the services provided and taking risks in Erick Y. Being surrounded by the best of the best in the Malaysian real estate industry at this award ceremony this evening is a privilege for me.
My fellow Deputy Minister of Finance, YB Hj Ahmad Bin Hj Maslan, recently launched a registration tag campaign organized by the Board of Valuers, Appraisers and Estate Agents Malaysia (BOVAEA). The campaign aims to encourage Real Estate Negotiators (REN) to register into the system. This will ensure that accurate monitoring can be implemented. Only those registered under BOVAEA can act as Estate Agents. They provide services in buying, selling, leasing properties for clients so that optimum returns can be achieved.
With the rising number of public complaints, Malaysia must say NO to Illegal Agents in the country and penalize those involved. The Government is confident that the latest initiative from BOVAEA will benefit the real estate industry and substantially raise the level of YB Datuk Chua Tee Yong Deputy Minister of Finance professionalism amongst real estate practitioners. Malaysia This evening, we recognize the outstanding achievements of the best Estate agents and Negotiators in the industry. You have worked tirelessly to reach this goal. Your hard work and dedication is what make you stand out as winners. I am optimistic that winners like yourselves will drive the industry to soar to greater heights of excellence.

It is indeed a pleasure to welcome all of you tonite.
Firstly, I would lil‹e to congratulate the Malaysian Institute of Estate Agents (MIEA) for organising its 37th Annual Dinner and Awards Night. It is a testimony of MlEA's success under the able leadership of its President, Siva Shanker.
MIEA has done a marvelous job to upgrade the professionalism in the real estate industry by having trained more than 12,000 Real Estate Negotiators (REN) nationwide. The idea to recognize RENs and to issue them an identification tag each has been in the Board's horizon for a long time.
The rationale for this registration exercise is to ensure that industry players are ethical and professional as the real estate sector plays a pivotal role in the economy of the Country and has contributed approximately Datuk Sr Haji Abd Hamid Bin Abu Bakar RM90 billion in sales last year. The registration and identification President The Board of Valuers, Appraisers & exercise will also elevate the level of professionalism amongst industry Estate Agents practitioners and circumvent illegal real estate brokers from practicing Malaysia blatantly.
On our end, the board intends to enhance further its enforcement efforts. Mention must also be made that any illegal agent who carries out estate agency transactions will be prosecuted and shall be liable to a three year imprisonment or RM300, 000 fine or both upon conviction.
I am pleased to observe that there are quite a large number of ReaI Estate Agents who are doing very well in their practice and I hope that the Practitioners will work hand in hand with the Board to bring the industry to greater heights.
To all the winners of the National Real Estate Awards, which I understand is the highlight of the evening, I take this opportunity to congratulate all of you on your excellent achievement as your hard work has paid off handsomely and the award is testimony to it.

My fellow Estate Agents and Negotiators. October is always a special month in the calendar of the Malaysian Institute of Estate Agents. It is the month where we come together to celebrate yet another successful year via our Annual Dinner. But more than that it is also the month where we celebrate our victories, successes and our achievements. The most prestigious event in our calendar is without a doubt is the MIEA National Real Estate Awards. This year a total of 13 awards were offered and a record number of 26 submissions were received. We are very pleased and honoured that amongst these were first time recipient from Perak. Well done State Branches. Tonight we celebrate the successes of our peers and fellow Estate Agents who have done well for themselves in 2013. Not everybody can be a winner but let me tell you this, there are no losers in this room. 2013 was a difficult year for Real Estate Agents and the fact that you are still standing and celebrating our Annual Dinner is testament to the fact that you have weathered the slowdown well. MIEA has done very well this year. The initial batch of Negotiators have been Siva Shanker registered with the Board and nearly all of them have received their practicing tag. Congratulations all of you. Wear your tags with PRIDE. The Board, with the assistance of RISM, PEPS and MIEA embarked on a massive public relations and publicity exercise to educate the public on the benefits of using Registered Estate Agents for all their property transactions. This exercise is well underway and is already beginning to show signs of success with both buyers and sellers insisting that Negotiators show them their tags before they decide to deal with them. We congratulate the Board on this massive initiative and look forward to working with them in the coming year to propel this exercise to the next level. My friends, the specters of Illegal Agents looms largely in our faces each day. These Illegal Agents are getting better organized and more structured, sometimes even adopting corporate identities. We need to stop these people now before they grow too big and become difficult to manage. We urge the Ministry to take our plight seriously and galvanize the police to take action against these illegals to the full extent of the law. They must not be allowed to practice with the impunity that they are displaying now. We welcome all of you to our Annual Dinner and Awards Night. The long established close cooperation between REHDA and MIEA has been monumental to the industry and it is truly an honour to be appointed as the Chief Judge of the MIEA National Real Estate Awards 2014. Since its establishment 6 years ago, the MIEA National Real Estate Awards has grown by leaps and bounds to become an indelible influence amongst its practitioners. The increasing number

It is such a laudable initiative for coming up with the Awards and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate MIEA for providing the industry players something to benchmark themselves against. I believe the Awards have and in years to come will become THE iconic Awards which any real estate agents and real estate agencies would crave for. Recognition of the Awards is an extra weight as it means prestige and higher values particularly in terms of credibility and reliability. Being awarded the country's top real estate agents or real estate agencies is no mean feat in an increasingly competitive and challenging environment!
Honestly speaking, the judging process was not an easy task. The entries received were very competitive and of the highest standards. The judges had a difficult time going through in detail the short-listed entries to ensure that the winners chosen are the best amongst the best. We were truly impressed by the strong interest of some participants who have gone the extra mile not only in demonstrating that their services are unique but have also adopted innovative and creative approaches in delivering quality services. From the entries, we are able to see how estate agents and agencies are constantly striving to improve their standards and I would encourage bigger participation in the future.

Shawn Adriano Valerio I'm from a Middle Class Family and my parents worked hard to put me through higher education. I studied and qualified as a mechanical engineer. Upon my return from USA, I began my working career, working for a large Japanese manufacturing company. That only lasted a year as I realised that my interests were elsewhere.
I then embarked on a career in Sales and Marketing spanning several industries: Engineering, Fast Moving Consumer Goods and Banking. This phase lasted for 9 years before I decided to leave the 'secure' environment of working for a bank and join the unknown of the Real Estate profession.

Shawn Adriano Valerio My decision to leave the 'security' of a banking job was realizing that my pay cheque and my future was determined by the competitiveness of my employer. The 6 years of experience in the consumer banking sales influenced my decision in choosing the Real Estate profession.
Initially it was a struggle knowing that there was no secure income and the added pressure of trying to get my first deal. It took me almost 6 months to secure my first real estate deal but thereafter a few deals followed suit.
The first real estate company I joined did teach me the importance of marketing and advertising my listings. I still believe that this is critical to the success of any sales person in the Real Estate profession. Innovative and creative advertisements are important to ensure that my advertisements stand out amongst the crowd.
It's now 4 years since joining the Carey Real Estate family. I've learned to be professional and creative in my approach towards engaging with clients. I have also learnt to leverage on teamwork and work on the strengths of my colleagues in the company.
I began to find my niche in the commercial real estate sector about 2 years ago and have particularly focused on investment driven assets. This is what I enjoy, engaging with clients to rationalize and help them achieve their investment goals.
Educating clients on the need to be an active investor to hedge against inflation and enhance wealth is my daily routine now!
