That’s the major question right now for the baseball team in Milwaukee, which traded base stealer extraordinare Scott Podsednik to the White Sox in exchange for Lee (.305Avg. 31HR 99RBI). He gives them the right handed power bat they’ve been lacking for a while to go sandwiched in between lefty hitters Lyle Overbay (All-Star) and veteran outfielder Geoff Jenkins. Jenkins (.851 career OPS), Lee and likely Brady Clark will compose the Brewers outfield. Behind the plate is Damian Miller, who works very well with start pitchers as he did in Arizona, Oakland and Chicago, so he will have no trouble handling Ben Sheets. Chad Moeller, an ex-teammate of Miller’s with the Diamondbacks, should spell him for about 40-50 games and be a decent backup. I question how good Clark can be in the everyday lineup, markedly as the leadoff man. Clark was decent in 2004, batting .280 and stealing 15 bases. Still, don’t see him staying there long if he’s only score 40-50 runs per season. And Clark will get the chance to touch home plate with guys like Lee, Overbay and Jenkins behind him. Russell Branyan poses a threat when on the field. Despite striking out quite often, he hit 11 dingers in 51 games. Branyan, whose 81 home runs are the most of someone with less than 1500 plate appearances, would relish the opportunity to start every day or get upwards of 250 at-bats.

    The Honorable Chairman and Members, Pima County Board of Supervisors Re: Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium and Pima County Stadium District January 15, 2014 Page 2 costs have been partially financed and fueled by the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority (ASTA), which was formed to assist in the building and financing of a new stadium for the Arizona Cardinals football team. The ASTA is only authorized to operate in Maricopa County. Over the years, a number of other spring training facilities have been built or upgraded in Maricopa County. Because of the additional financing provided by the ASTA, we cannot compete with Maricopa County in attracting new Major League teams for spring training. The total cost of building sports facilities in Maricopa County is now nearly $1.3 billon. The downtown Phoenix Chase Field public cost was $238 million; the Arizona Cardinals stadium in Glendale had a public cost of $307.5 million; the Coyotes hockey arena was constructed with $180 million in public funding; and $542 million in public funds has been spent for both new and renovated Cactus League baseball facilities. Several other large sports facility expenditures are planned in Maricopa County, including construction of the new $99 million Mesa Stadium for the Chicago Cubs; nearly $28 million in construction and renovations at the Peoria Sports Complex for the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners; and $17.5 million in renovations to HoHokam Field for the Oakland Athletics. These are extraordinarily exorbitant expenditures of public money for sports facilities used primarily by for-profit private organizations. An article in the December 13, 2013 Arizona Republic reported on Glendale’s fiscal stress resulting from financing sports facilities and indicated the annual payment for the two- team spring training facility for the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers would cost $17.5 million this year.

    Snapshot of U.S. Department of Education Office of Safe and Healthy Students (OSHS) Safe and Supportive Schools (S3) Grant to California Department of Education TOTAL AMOUNT AWARDED TO CALIFORNIA (2010-2014): $2,220,770 CA S3 PROGRAM SUMMARY The California Safe and Supportive Schools (CA S3) grant primarily aimed to reduce high rates of drug- and violence-related behavior in 58 high schools across 26 school districts. CA S3 empowered students and engaged the community by supporting the implementation of more than 30 different programs, facilitating student “fishbowl” discussions at school sites, and developing briefs and tip sheets on a range of critical school climate topics. CA S3 worked with the participating districts and schools to use annual school climate survey data – as well as discipline, incident, and other administrative data – to choose and implement interventions tailored to those districts’ and schools’ specific populations and needs. Additionally, CA S3 successfully addressed challenges related to increasing stakeholder awareness on the relevance of school climate, building staff buy-in, and engaging parents. GOAL OF THE SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE SCHOOLS PROGRAM S3 grantees reported annually on the number of participating schools with: • A decreased percentage of students who reported alcohol use in the past 30 days; • A decreased percentage of students who reported harassment or bullying on school property; • Improvement of school safety scores (as defined by each grantee); and • A decrease in the number of suspensions for violence without injury.     MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

BACKGROUND: Del Oro High School is located on 55-acres at 3301 Taylor Road in Loomis, and site improvements include a swimming pool, baseball fields, tennis courts, track, and football stadium. The current swimming pool was constructed in 1969, and it no longer meets the needs of the school and community. It lacks the gutters that are typically found in competitive pools to reduce wave splash-back, and the facility has inadequate restrooms and amenities for athletes and visitors. The pool is used year-round, and typical attendance at a dual team swim meet can top 800 people including athletes and their families. The Town of Loomis coordinates with Del Oro to organize swim lessons and open swim hours for the community. Given the age of the swimming pool, its configuration, and heavy usage, Del Oro has long sought to replace its current pool. The planned Del Oro High School Aquatic Center includes a competition swimming pool measuring 25 yards x 35 meters.
