Seaborn was named to the Preseason 2nd Team after picking up MAAC Rookie of the Year in 2015-16. WHAT THE HAWKS LOST MU graduated just one senior in versatile guard Deon Jones, a 1,000-point scorer and three-year started after transfer- ring from Towson. Last year, he led the Hawks in rebounding with 6.3 caroms per game and was one of three Hawks to average in double fi gures with 10.4 points per game. Only one other player does not return from last season’s roster is freshman walk-on guard Tyler Robinson, who appeared in two games, both against USC, last season. WHAT THE HAWKS BRING BACK Monmouth returns 2,538 of the 2,861 points the team scored last season, meaning that Monmouth brings back 88.7% of its scoring from 2015-16. MU also brings back an average of 81.8 points per game when calculated over a 31-game regular season schedule. The Hawks will see 89.9% of the teams minutes played last season back on the fl oor this year, as a group of veterans and four newcomers fi ll out the roster. RECEIVING VOTES For the fi rst time in program history, Monmouth received preseason votes in the AP Top-25, picking up seven in the fi rst edition of the ranking this season. The Hawks found themselves receiving votes in the AP poll seven times last season, with a high of 11 votes on December 28. MU spent consecutive weeks in the rankings twice, on 12/21 and 12/28 as well as 2/8 and 2/15. HAWKS AGAINST TOP COMPETITION MU will see two teams in the non-conference that were ranked in both the AP Top-25 and Coaches Polls preseason, and a third that received votes in the AP rankings. The University of North Carolina, who Monmouth will see on December 28, was ranked No. 6 in both polls, while Syracuse (11/19) was No. 19 in the AP poll and No. 17 in the Coaches Poll. Princeton also received two votes in the AP polls. JUSTIN ROBINSON Justin Robinson comes off one of the most impressive seasons in program history, setting the single-season scoring record as well as earning MAAC Player of the Year and AP All-America Honorable Mention accolades. He combined with Micah Seaborn to score the most points as a duo in school history, and was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year as well as to the Lute Olson Watch List as the nation’s top player. NEWCOMERS The Hawks have four newcomers, though only two are new to the program and two redshirted last year. A pair of true freshmen in Ray Salnave and Sam Ibiezugbe come to West Long Branch looking to make an impact, with Salnave a New York-native at the guard spot and Ibiezugbe, a center, hailing from The Masters School in Connecticut. Also joining the group are a pair who earned redshirts last season in guard Louie Pillari and forward Mustapha Traore. Pillari is a local and played scholastically at Christian Brothers Academy, while Traore joined the program last winter and sat the fi nal semester. SEEING NEW FACES Monmouth’s fi rst four home games will take place against a fi rst-year head coach. MU welcomes Drexel and Zach Spik- er on opening night before seeing Cornell and new head man Brian Earl. An early-season conference matchup will see Canisius and the only fi rst-year head coach in the league, Reggie Witherspoon before Hall of Fame weekend concludes with the Hawks squaring up with Army West Point and rookie Jimmy Allen. Allen was Spiker’s associate head coach at Army last year, and earned the promotion after Spiker accepted the top spot at Drexel. TRAVELING LESS The Hawks have four non-league home games, compared to just one last season. MU will open this season at home, whereas the Blue and White traveled 8,681.4 miles round trip before seeing the fl oor at home last year. THE KING RICE SHOW Prior to the season, Monmouth Athletics and the MU basketball program announced the introduction of The King Rice Show. The show will air on Monday evenings from 7:30pm to 8:30pm on ’s Facebook Live page, and will also go out live on Monmouth’s student radio station, WMCX 88.9FM, following the New Year. The program will also air Wednesday nights on The Shore Sports Network, WOBM-AM 1160 and 1310, from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. Eddy Occhipinti will host the show, and MU student radio voice Mike Trapasso will produce and have a short segment during the hour. BROADCASTING THE HAWKS You can catch the Hawks in a variety of ways this season, both on television and on the radio. Nearly every home game will air on an ESPN platform, including ESPN3 and several fl ex games with ESPNU and ESPN2. Every road game will air on The Shore Sports Network with Eddy Occhipinti, Steve Bazaz, Matt Harmon and Bob Lampinen, on WOBM-AM 1160 and 1310 and shoresportsnetwork.com as well as the RadioPup app. The student station, with Mike Trapasso and Matt DeLuca leading a host of MU students, will handle broadcasts for WMCX 88.9FM, wmcx.com and on the TuneIn Radio app.
