It is one of the world’s most remote areas and a true destination for adventurers. Trekking to K2 base camp offers splendid views of the local area and the Pakistani wilderness.

Trango Adventure has been operating adventure holidays in Pakistan for over 40 years, specialising in trekking and climbing Expeditions. All our adventure holidays can be tailored to suit your tastes and interests so you can experience a tailor-made adventure holiday and enjoy a K2 trek the way you want to. It is also the best way to see the glorious views from the mountain.

The K2 Base Camp Trek journey begins in Islamabad where you are met by a Trango Adventure representative at the airport. From there, you will be transferred to your hotel and in the evening, briefed over the upcoming trek at dinner. The small town is the last civilisation you will see for some time. From there, the trekking begins as you head to Korfong. K2 Base Camp is 90 kilometres away. The distance may not sound like much, but trekking with packs at that elevation is very difficult. It is a chance to test your mettle and adventure attitude. As the elevation increases, you will experience incredible views that take the breath away along with the altitude. The sun in summer can be harsh as you trek up to K2 Base Camp, so having protective clothing and sun cream with you is a way to prevent unnecessary sunburns.

Each day you will trek for several hours covering kilometre after kilometre of elevation as you draw closer to K2 Base Camp. You and your group will trek on Baltoro Glacier and pass through areas such as Urdukas, Khoburtse, and Goro. On day 14 of your trekking adventure, you will finally reach K2 Base Camp. There, you will stand 5,150 metres above sea level and be surrounded by panoramic views of the Karakorum Mountains. After spending the day at base camp, you will descend to Concordia where you will enjoy a good night’s sleep. The adventure is not over, however, as you begin your descent and see K2 completely differently on the way down.

Once back in Askole, you will celebrate a trek well done with your team of hikers, guide and porters. The drop in altitude starts to become more noticeable as the granite walls and spires lining the glacier, which yesterday looked almost lower than us, now tower to lofty heights above. There is more oxygen in the air and slightly warmer. Passing through the campsite of Urdukas and the Duke of Abruzzi, you can marvel at the tenacity of those early pioneers who endured untold hardship simply to get to their base camps in these mountains. You will have lunch on Duke’s terrace with spectacular views across the glacier to Biale Peak which remains hidden except from this point. After lunch, you continue trekking down the Valley, sometimes on the glacier and sometimes along the moraine or the valley sides until you reach Khoburtse camp, your first off-glacier camp for some days. Continue descending on Baltoro Glacier towards Paiju with a beautiful view of Trango Tower. Do a detour to the south to cross the Liligo Glacier. Two decades ago its snout was half a mile up the valley and now it has collided with the main Baltoro Glacier with the result that the churning forces have made it impossible to cross without the detour. After the detour and returned to the main Baltoro Glacier, you now cross its north side, climbing over the huge swells of the glacier towards the ramparts of Uli Biaho. On the other side you then work your way down to the valley where you pick up the main trail and pass by the snout where the underground river erupts out in a cascade to become the Braldu River. Now you are off the glacier and at a lower elevation it is considerably warmer, and you may make an early start to use the cool of the morning. Leaving Paiju you walk on a good trail down the valley. It is surprising how different the experience is compared to your ascent. The trail rises and falls as you cross several alluvial fans. You have to cross some side streams today, mostly using makeshift bridges or stepping-stones but it may be necessary also to wade across, especially later in the day. The source of all these streams are meltwater, and so, they grow bigger as the day gets warmer. At one point the trail passes close to the river besides walls of conglomerate, and you may feel its tremendous power. You follow the main Braldu river downstream to its confluence with the Panma river where you turn north-east to reach a camping place beside the toll bridge at Jhola.

Soon you will follow a pleasant trail which leads down to the little ablation area beside the Biafo Glacier known as Korofong, surrounded by sparse grasses and tamarack bushes.

https://www.trangoadventure.com [email protected] Ph: 0092 5815 453144 After Korofong you first follow the glacial moraine of the Biafo Glacier and then walk beside the river that issues from its snout until you reach a bridge which allows you to cross to its north side. The trail passes through a wide flat area known locally as the ‘King’s Polo Ground before climbing to pass through a convenient cleft in a ridge of a rock. Descending steeply down the other side of this ‘window’, you have a pleasant stroll through a boulder-strewn landscape before climbing once again up onto a shallow plateau. You cross several small side valleys and begin to see various signs of habitation before reaching an irrigation channel bring melt water to the field of Askoli. You follow the channel for a while and can appreciate the tremendous skills of the local Balti people who have harnessed the distant snows to grow their crops in a high altitude desert. Eventually, you reach green fields and stone walls which lead you into Askole village. Some of your K2 trek porters are from Askoli, and they will be happy to be home. Today, you will celebrate your success of K2 Base Camp Trek with the porters and hand out their tips as a token of your appreciation for their hard work.
