Shape Shifting for Time Shifting: Weight Loss in the Transmediation of This Is Us Jennifer Lynn Jones, Indiana University Successfully competing in Peak TV requires savvy promotions. Generally, “Peak TV” refers to the saturation of scripted television in this alleged new “Golden Age of Television,” with broadcast networks, cable channels, and stand-alone streaming services competing for ever more elusive viewers. Following the Pearson family and its unconventional triplets, NBC’s hit This Is Us (2016 to current) has distinguished itself in Peak TV by updating the generic conventions of a family soap with a mobile narrative temporality, constantly moving from present to past and, as season two glimpses suggest, into the future, in ways that create experiential and affective convergences between characters. This has given the show an edge in an era when network television has struggled with changing televisual viewing practices marked by both time- and platform-shifting. These relate to another significant aspect, body size: a main storyline involves the corpulence and weight loss of sister Kate, which has likewise necessitated body shaping in the contract of actress Chrissy Metz. The vicissitudes of Metz’s body extend Kate’s story, thus creating textual convergences through the body as a platform for transmediation. This response will consider how Metz’s appearances in mainstream television talk shows contribute to this phenomenon. Metz claims that she “committed to Kate’s evolution” in her audition process knowing that it would involve body shaping.1 “Body shaping” refers to any activity meant to transform the body, whether through diet, exercise, prosthetics, surgery, or cosmetology.

The exhibition opened on November 8, 2016, with special preview performances from November 2 - 6, 2016 during the NYCF. Paranoia Man in a Rat Fink Room continues after the festival with events and discussions brought together by Storefront through February 18, 2017. The exhibition follows a tradition of spatial experimentation at Storefront where the boundaries between architecture, art, and the subject are dissolved into one continuous environment. The installation is a historical pastiche of urban and architectural experiences linked through a mise-en-scène comprised of three architectural environments - a Canal Street style kiosk filled with the leftover DVDs and VHSs from Jungle Video (a now defunct media superstore in Los Angeles); a comedy club partially inspired by the original Rat Fink Room (the world's first dedicated stand-up comedy club, which opened in 1963); and a bathroom that has been converted into surveillance headquarters that will keep audio/video recordings of the last days of Storefront. Actors' Stories are a SAG Awards® Tradition When the first Screen Actors Guild Awards® were presented on March 8, 1995, the ceremony opened with a speech by Angela Lansbury introducing the concept behind the SAG Awards and the Actor® statuette. During her remarks she shared a little of her own history as a performer: "I've been Elizabeth Taylor's sister, Spencer Tracy's mistress, Elvis' mother and a singing teapot." She ended by telling the audience of SAG Awards nominees and presenters, "Tonight is dedicated to the art and craft of acting by the people who should know about it: actors. And remember, you're one too!" Over the Years This glimpse into an actor’s life was so well received that it began a tradition of introducing each Screen Actors Guild Awards telecast with a distinguished actor relating a brief anecdote and sharing thoughts about what the art and craft mean on a personal level. For the first eight years of the SAG Awards, just one actor performed that customary opening. For the 9th Annual SAG Awards, however, producer Gloria Fujita O'Brien suggested a twist. She observed it would be more representative of the acting profession as a whole if several actors, drawn from all ages and backgrounds, told shorter versions of their individual journeys. To add more fun and to emphasize the universal truths of being an actor, the producers decided to keep the identities of those storytellers secret until they popped up on camera. An August Lineage Ever since then, the SAG Awards have begun with several of these short tales, typically signing off with his or her name and the evocative line, "I Am an Actor™."
