It’s hard to believe that we are already immersed in spring and summer activities at Ayrshire Cancer Support. Since our last newsletter, Ayrshire’s leading cancer support charity has been busy providing free services to the Ayrshire community. As a small charity, with a big remit, our small staff team supported by our large band of volunteers has helped to support thousands of people through their cancer diagnosis. As demand for our services grows, I would like to make a special appeal to anyone who has a few spare hours each week to come forward and help us. The recent NHS chemotherapy service review has highlighted the important issue of how cancer patients travel to their hospital appointments to receive chemotherapy and radiotherapy – and whilst 90% of the journeys we undertake are to the Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow, there is also a real need to take patients for their treatment at and Hospitals. We anticipate again this year, that we will make over 13,000 journeys to hospital – but we can’t do it without the help of our volunteer drivers. If you can volunteer to drive patients to hospital, please get in touch. Our capital fundraising campaign, Home4Cancer, has also been in the news, and we have almost raised enough money to buy a property to turn into a drop-in and therapy centre in Ayr, like the one we have in . This sees us approach the end of Phase One, thereafter we will need to raise funds to refurbish and create a purpose built space which serves the needs of cancer patients and their families that live in or near South Ayrshire. Our therapeutic services have also been in great demand and as the general public become more comfortable with talking about their mental health and well-being, so do people affected by cancer. Many years ago there would have been a stigma associated with cancer and counselling – it’s so encouraging that people now see the real and lasting benefits of talking to a trained professional counsellor about how they feel and how they can adopt strategies to cope. If you need to speak to someone about how you are feeling, in relation to a cancer diagnosis or a bereavement, we can provide free professional counselling at our centres in Ayr or Kilmarnock. Every day, we need to raise around £2,500 to provide our free services at our centres, in the community and in hospital wards across Ayrshire. We receive no funding from the government or the NHS – and are funded by the generosity of the Ayrshire community – both business and private. I’d like to thank each of our supporters for doing their bit and continuing to make a difference to the lives of people affected by cancer. Finally, I’d like to thank all of our volunteers, because it is only due to their dedication and desire to help others that we can provide the personal support we do. We are a relatively small and local organisation yet we are able to provide a substantial number of support services completely free of charge to cancer patients and their loved ones. I hope for your continued support to help ensure we can carry on providing free, face to face support and practical help to the many people who need us, in 2020 and well beyond. Thank you for all that you do in helping to make a difference to the lives of people affected by cancer throughout Ayrshire. Sandra McCall CEO

Ayrshire Cancer Support were approached by the team at Dumfries House after the opening of their new Health and Wellbeing centre, and asked if we could provide services within the venue. After initial visits to the centre and listening to feedback from the local community, we are delighted to offer some of our services free of charge there. Louise Graeme, Head of Cancer Support Services said, ‘After meeting with the team at Dumfries House and recognising the need for the delivery of outreach services in the area, we decided to offer counselling services in connection with cancer at the Health and Wellbeing centre. Not everyone finds it easy to arrange transport to our centres in Ayr and Kilmarnock, and although we can arrange this free of charge, we felt it would be easier for patients and their families to access Dumfries House. We are delighted that we can now arrange our services in the beautiful surroundings of Dumfries House by appointment with clients living in the Cumnock area.’ To arrange an appointment, call 01563 538008 in the first instance.

WWW.AYRSHIRECS.ORG • AYRSHIRE CANCER SUPPORT MAGAZINE 17 BUSINESS: BUILD YOUR BRAND AND HELP YOUR COMMUNITY AT THE SAME TIME

We are delighted to have launched our latest corporate brochure, which outlines the benefits of becoming a business partner of Ayrshire Cancer Support. Todays’ customers hold companies to a higher standard. They’re looking for more than just material products or quality services when choosing a company to work with: 9 in 10 consumers expect companies to not only make a profit, but also operate responsibly to address social issues, particularly in their own community. Eighty-four per cent of consumers also said they seek out responsible businesses whenever possible, the majority of whom prefer partnerships to directly benefit their local community. Recognising how important social responsibility is to customers and employees, many companies now focus on and practice corporate social responsibility (CSR). More companies are now engaging in local charity partnerships as there is a recognition that they directly benefit their employees and their families. Undertaking socially responsible initiatives is truly a win-win situation. Not only will your company appeal to socially conscious consumers and employees, but you’ll also make a real difference in the Ayrshire community. Engage your employees and customers in giving back. Business owners in the corporate world have more power than many realise and using that power to improve the local community can bring people of all backgrounds, ages and interests together. By engaging your employees and customers in giving back, corporations can solve big local problems and have a huge impact!

“THIS NEW WAVE OF BUYERS IS DEMANDING TRANSPARENCY, AND WHEN GIVEN THE CHOICE, WILL ALMOST ALWAYS CHOOSE A BRAND OR PRODUCT TIED TO A SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS CAUSE RATHER THAN A CORPORATE BIG NAME BRAND”
