THE GONFALONIERI GROUP OF MAGISTRATES

Within the Historic Procession of the Florentine Republic, as was already in force in the first editions of Calcio, the insignia of the Magistrates are a very im- portant part of the Florentine heraldry of the period. It was necessary to re- cover this historical aspect as soon as possible within the Football Proces- sion. Since the flag bearers, who had been entrusted with the responsibility of representing these signs had aban- doned the traditional flags for the most choreographic with the red lily in the center in 2002, the procession was miss- ing these representative signs so im- portant for the representation and re- enactment historical. They will be brought by gonfalonieri, of which the Treccani encyclopedia provides us with this definition: ... who carried the banner, that is the sign, the banner of a militia, of a guild, etc ... also in a figurative sense. The term then went on to indicate specific magistrates, especially in the Tuscan cities. From the next 2017 edition of the Tournament of San Giovanni del Calcio Storico Fiorentino, these signs will be carried through a flag bearing the arms, from 16 Gonfalonieri who are dressed in historical clothes that can be recognized in fresco paintings by Vasari di Palazzo Vecchio, Salone dei 500.

The detail of the fresco in the western part of the Salone dei 500 in Palazzo Vecchio and representing "Max- imilian of Austria attempting to conquer Livorno" was chosen to inspire the creation of the Gonfalonieri clothes of the Magistrates of the Historical Procession of the Florentine Republic. The figure taken for ex- ample is the man positioned in the middle, just behind the tambourine. It is a graceful pose of the military that has in his dress a very exuberant part in the sleeves and golden finishes throughout the clothing. From this figure, first extracted from the essential, a sketch was made and the tai- lor made the 16 dresses. The historical reference is linear and correct, the trou- sers puffed and above the knee perfectly consistent with the period represented.

The dress is characterized by a light velvet, with gold trim, sleeves with pullovers tied with a golden band, gale and puffs in satin fabric. The complete suit consists of:  Beaded jacket with tattered sleeves with tongue base;  Trousers with snuffy fabric sneakers;  Feathered cap;  Socks and shoes.
