4 1 Welcome from Tourism and Events

Welcome to the Blast by Tour de Brisbane.

This event is a new multi-activity, family-friendly experience which incorporates a free walk, community fun run and community ride delivered in a COVID-safe manner, with a course that takes in Brisbane’s city sights including the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and Story Bridge. Additionally, the event includes the ITU Age Group World Qualifier for Duathlon and the 10.5km Cycle Sprint for competitive or amateur cyclists.

This year has brought unprecedented challenges to the tourism and events industry, and this event encourages visitors to the Brisbane region to support local businesses as they continue to face the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tourism and Events Queensland is proud to support the Blast by Tour de Brisbane, which features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar.

Enjoy the event, and if you’re visiting Brisbane I encourage you to stay on to explore more of the region, from its café culture, retail shopping precincts, suburban green spaces and cultural tourism offerings to its islands, charming country towns, national parks and amazing produce.

Leanne Coddington Chief Executive Officer Tourism and Events Queensland

6 1 Welcome from the Event Director Hello friends of Brisbane.

It is a pleasure to welcome walkers, runners, riders and duathletes to beautiful Brisbane City in our wonderful Sunshine State.

The Blast by Tour de Brisbane is five different events designed to give the community a chance to celebrate our City in fully closed roads and cross the Story Bridge on its 80th birthday.

There is no denying that 2020 has been a year like no other. Together with the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council we are proud to offer this community gathering.

NXsports is delighted to create the Blast as a special thank you to the businesses and residents of Brisbane for allowing us to conduct the annual Tour de Brisbane in April.

Your bib not only provides you with timing, but also includes a digital barcode that can be used to access your personal photos from the day for free. A photography link will be available on our website on event day for you to explore your happy snaps.

We must say thank you to our Safety Partner Splatt Lawyers for covering the insurance costs for all participants in our Free Walk, Run and Ride – thanks Kerry and Di.

We are proud to be supporting our Official Charity Partner The Common Good, an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation. All funds raised goes directly to vital heart and lung transplant research. Just $44 buys one hour of research, so if you have not donated already I urge you to consider a donation through the ‘Fundraise’ link on our website.

Finally, I must stress this is a COVID-Safe event – please read the screening information in this book so you are prepared; and expect precautions and control will be enforced.

Enjoy your Sunday morning and again thank you Brisbane – see you at the Tour de Brisbane on Sunday 11 April 2021.

Have fun,

Mike Crawley Event Director NXsports Community Foundation

22 Cycle The Duathlon course starts above the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and cycles across the iconic Story Bridge, continuing through the city on a looped course with transition in the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens.

The cycle course is a 3.5 lap 23.9km course for the Sprint Distance and a 1.5 Lap 10.1km course for the Enticer Distance.

Please ensure you have made yourself familiar with the cycle course, in particular the intersection on Edward Street.

Starts will be carried out with 4 people at a time at 10 second intervals, as directed from the marshalling area.

For those doing the Sprint event, they will be directed around a U- Turn and back through the City and across the Story Bridge to complete their first lap.

At the completion of the bike, competitors will dismount at the Botanic Gardens Edwards Street Entrance and proceed to rack their bike before heading out on the run course.

23 Drafting

Drafting behind or next to another bike or any other vehicle is strictly prohibited. Athletes must ride on the left side of the road, except when passing other cyclists.

The draft zone of a competitor may not overlap the draft zone of another competitor, motorcycle or vehicle except in the following circumstances:

a) When the competitor is in the process of legally passing another competitor, motorcycle or vehicle: i. for safety reasons ii. for an aid station iii. for entrance to or departure from a transition area iv. in making an acute turn

b) When passing a forward competitor or motorcycle, the rear competitor is allowed a maximum of 20 seconds to pass through the 10m draft zone. Failure to observe this may result in a Blue Card Time penalty for drafting.

c) When passing a forward vehicle, the rear competitor is allowed a maximum of 90 seconds to pass through the draft zone. Failure to observe this may result in a penalty.

d) At every instant during the overlapping of draft zones, the rear competitor must be seen to be gaining on the forward competitor or motorcycle or vehicle. Failure to observe this may result in a penalty.

e) Once passed, a competitor must immediately commence to drop back out of the draft zone of the forward competitor before attempting to re-pass.

A competitor is deemed to have been passed once the leading edge of the front wheel of the passing bicycle has moved in front of the leading edge of the front wheel of the competitor’s bicycle. Failure to observe this may result in a penalty.

In short: • you have 20 seconds to pass another competitor once you have entered the draft zone • you must be making forward progress • you have 20 seconds to drop out of the draft zone once passed • Failure to observe these rules may result in a Blue Card Time penalty for drafting

MAKE SURE TO STAY LEFT ON THE BIKE
