St. Brigid’s Parish,

NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2008

Dear Friends,

During the Summer a number of significant happenings took place. Pam, the Parish Secretary, retired in order to spend more time with her husband Michael and family. Pam was of great service to the Parish for almost a decade and her helpful, pleasant manner was greatly appreciated by all who came in contact with her.

Another retirement from the Parish was that of Sr. Anita. She had been pas- torally involved in the Parish for the last five years and her contribution on many fronts was also greatly appreciated. It is hoped that the pastoral work Sister en- gaged in will now be shared among the various pastoral groups. Both ladies will be sadly missed.

Many of you will be aware of the arson attack on the storage building behind the Church on 24th July last. The building and its contents were destroyed. The Gardai have been most diligent in their investigations and we are grateful to them. They were alert again on Friday morning 15th August at 3.30 a.m. when they discovered that the Resource Centre had been broken into. Fortunately not too much damage was caused on this occasion.

Following on our earlier consultation with Parishioners, you will all be now aware that since the end of July there is no longer a Sunday evening Mass at 6.30 p.m. It is hoped that the Parishioners who attended this Mass may now be able to at- tend our Sunday morning Masses.

On Friday 5th September some forty of us will be flying to Tel Aviv, via London and beginning our Parish pilgrimage in the Holy Land. Our first five days will be in Jerusalem, visiting the Temple area, Mount of Olives, Garden of Gethsemane, Calvary and the Holy Sepulchre. We will also travel out to Bethlehem, Ain Ka- reem (the place of the Visitation) and the Dead Sea, including Qumran (where the Dead Sea scrolls were found in 1947). We then travel northwards to Tiberius (on the Sea of Galilee) for the remainder of our visit during which time we will visit Capernaum, Mount Tabor, Cana and Nazareth before returning home. We would ask your prayers for a safe and peaceful journey. Fr. Alex

Vacancy for Parish Secretary

We are inviting applications for the above position. The work entails confidentiality, computer literacy and a certain flexibility in working hours. The hours are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday (i.e. 15 hours weekly). Salary negotiable. If interested please contact Msgr. Stenson at 833 3793 for further details. With the forthcoming Parish pilgrimage to the Holy Land, the following lines are of interest.

There Are Two Seas—a Parable by Bruce Barton

There are two seas in the Holy Land. One is fresh, and fish are in it. Splashes of green adorn its banks. Trees spread their branches over it, and stretch out their thirsty roots to dip of its healing water. Along its shore the children play. The River Jordan makes this sea with sparkling water from the hills. So it laughs in the sunshine. And men build their houses near to it, and birds their nests; and every kind of life is happier because it is there. The River Jordan flows on south into another sea. Here is no splash of fish, no flutter- ing leaf, no song of birds, no children's laughter. Travellers choose another route unless on urgent business. The air hangs above its waters and neither man nor beast nor fowl will drink. What makes this mighty difference in these neighbour seas? Not the River Jordan. It empties the same good water into both. Not the soil in which they lie; not the country round about. This is the difference. The Sea of Galilee receives but does not keep the Jordan. For every drop that flows into it another drop flows out. The giving and receiving go on in equal measure. The other sea is shrewder, hoarding its income jealously. It will not be tempted into any generous impulse. Every drop it gets, it keeps. The Sea of Galilee gives and lives. This other sea gives nothing. It is named the Dead. There are two seas in the Holy Land. There are two kinds of people in the world. Which kind are we?
