The victory is also the first at the Division I level for head coach Lance Harter and the first for any women’s program at Arkansas. The Razorbacks won three national event titles during the weekend to score a program-best 63 points atop the team standings. Prior to Saturday’s result, the program had a previous high finish of third place at the 2000 national meet in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks entered the meet with a top-five finish in three of the previous four years before ascending to the top of the team podium. With 63 points, the Razorbacks posted the third-highest team total in meet history. Arkansas scored 50 of its points Saturday. Doubling back from Friday’s anchor of the victorious distance-medley relay, Scott claimed her first NCAA individual title with a first-place run at 3,000 meters. The Razorback senior crossed the finish line to a standing ovation from the home crowd in a time of 8:55.19, more than three seconds ahead of the runner-up. Scott is the second runner in program history to win an indoor title at 3,000 meters, joining Sarah Schwald who won in 1995. Morris tied the NCAA indoor meet record in her victory in the pole vault, posting a final clearance of 4.60m/15-1. -

RADFORD* Department of Sport Sciences, Brunel University, Osterley Campus, Borough Road, Isleworth, Middlesex TW7 5DU, UK Accepted 19 November 2001 In this study, we examined aspects of the 4 ´ 100 m relay that are amenable to mathematical analysis. We looked at factors that aþ ect the time required to complete the relay, focusing on the performance of elite male athletes. Factors over which the individual athletes, and the team coach, can exercise some control are: the starting positions of the runners on legs 2, 3 and 4, the positions at which baton exchanges occur, the free distances at the baton exchanges and the running order of the athletes. The lane draw is shown to have an important in¯ uence on the relay time, although it is outside the control of the team coach. Teams drawn in the outside lanes bene® t from the inverse relation between bend radius of curvature and running speed. For teams composed of athletes with diþ erent times over 100 m, we show that the fastest relay times are achieved with the fastest athlete taking the ® rst leg, with the slowest two runners allocated to the ® nal two legs. One of the critical differences between a champion athlete and an also-ran entails how they are able to maintain intensity of effort over time. Elite athletes such as 45-year-old sprinter Merlene Ottey, who competed in her 7th Olympics in Athens 2004, have the propensity to direct their energies extremely effectively. We will be examining how motivation contributes to success for masters athletes and suggest some motivational techniques which you can tailor to your athletes’ needs. The two types of motivation Two main types of motivation determine athletes’ behaviours. Those who are driven by factors external to participation such as prize money, a trophy or to be revered by the fans, will usually gain greater satisfaction from such rewards than they will simply from playing their sport. This is known as extrinsic motivation. Some athletes compete well under negative pressure, such as a threat from their coach if they do not perform up to scratch. This is also a common form of extrinsic motivation; it works through notifying the athlete that if they are not willing to give maximal effort, they will lose favour or be dropped from the team. -

Linthorne Brunel University, UK 12.1 Introduction Athletics has been described as many sports within a sport. There are 24 events in the Olympic competition programme, and these events may be grouped into sprints, middle-distances, long- distances, hurdles, relays, walks, jumps, throws, and multi-events. To excel in a particular event an athlete must be genetically endowed with an appropriate body size. The athlete must then undertake physical training to develop the required mix of strength, speed and endurance; and spend many hours practicing the technical and tactical skills of the event. Athletes who are successful in the international arena usually specialise in just one event. Most athletics competitions are held under the rules and regulations of the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF), which was founded in 1912 and has about 220 member nations. Of interest to the sports engineer and sports scientist are the restrictions on the design of the competition facilities, the design of the athlete’s equipment, and the techniques that the athlete may employ. An unstated but underlying philosophy in athletics is that the outcome of a competition should be determined by the physical and technical abilities of the athlete, and not by differences in the quality of the athletes’ equipment (Julin, 1992). Most of the rules for the competition arena and the athlete’s equipment are ‘proscriptive’ in that the material, construction, and dimensions are specified in detail and to high precision; whereas the rules for the athlete’s technique are ‘restrictive’ in that they usually specify what is forbidden, rather than specifying how the movement must be performed. -

INTRODUCTION At the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, track and field spectators marveled at the world-record breaking performance of Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt, in the Men’s 100-Meter Final.1 In running 9.69 seconds and breaking his previous world record of 9.72, Bolt stunned observers as he ran his time with no measurable wind assistance and slowed in the last 15 meters of the race to celebrate his victory.2 Yet before 2008, Bolt had never broken 10 seconds in the 100 meters; in fact, the 100 meters was not even considered Bolt’s strongest track event.3 Later that week, Bolt went on to claim two more world records while earning Olympic gold medals in the 200 meters and 4x100 meter relay.4 Not surprisingly, Bolt has faced questions from reporters about taking performance-enhancing drugs.5 While Bolt has denied such allegations and has never failed a drug test, he is subject to public skepticism, especially given track and field’s tainted history of drug scandals by a number of Olympic champions, world champions, and record holders.6 As Bolt now must defend the legitimacy of * Ms. Lambert received her Bachelor’s of the Arts in History from Princeton University, 2006; and her Juris Doctorate from Temple University Beasley School of Law, 2010. -
