The forest remnant is located within the Matemateaonga Ecological District and lies in the Tangahoe River catchment. Campbell's Bush is a small (1.4ha) lowland forest remnant owned by the South Taranaki District Council as a Scenic Reserve. The bush remnant is only 900 metres west of the Rotokare Scenic Reserve and is within the Rotokare Reserve Trust 'halo' management area. Ecological Features Flora The high canopy at Campbell’s Bush is dominated by pukatea, tawa and swamp maire with occasional rewarewa and titoki. The understory is recovering well including species such as kawakawa, kanono, pigeonwood, mahoe and turepo and has become dense in places. Native ferns are well established in places and are establishing wider including shining spleenwort, sickle spleenwort, hen and chicken fern etc. Swamp maire (Regionally Distinctive) is present in good numbers and is notable for this site. Fauna The reserve will definitely be receiving spill over from the predator fenced Lake Rotokare Scenic Reserve and also benefiting from the halo pest animal control programme in this area. Tui were generally in numbers higher than usual for a small site. -

INTRODUCTION The age of many mid-late Quaternary surfaces in the area between Wanganui and Palmerston North has been poorly known because: 1. The marine terraces are not as well defined as they are west of Wanganui (Pillans, 1990). 2. The wave cut surfaces are difficult to locate, and the underlying sediments are sand dominated and softer. 3. The loess cover on marine and river terraces is of the Pallic Soil facies, i.e. pale grey and mottled, making paleosols difficult to see in the poorly drained loess. -

Ryan ([email protected]) Abstract: This paper presents the current state-of-knowledge of the Aotearoa New Zealand (Aotearoa) last interglacial (MIS 5 sensu lato) sea-level record compiled within the framework of the World Atlas of Last Interglacial Shorelines (WALIS) 15 database. Seventy-seven total relative sea-level (RSL) indicators (direct, marine-, and terrestrial-limiting points), commonly in association with marine terraces, were identified from over 120 studies reviewed. Extensive coastal deformation around New Zealand has prompted research focused on active tectonics, which requires less precision than sea-level reconstruction. The range of last interglacial paleo-shoreline elevations are resulted in a significant range of elevation measurements on both the North Island (276.8 ± 10.0 to -94.2 ± 10.6 m amsl) and South Island (173.1165.8 ± 2.0 to -70.0 ± 10.3 m amsl) and 20 prompted the use of RSL indicators tohave been used to estimate rates of vertical land movement; however, indicators in many instances lackk adequate description and age constraint for high-quality RSL indicators. -

James Cowan: The Significance of his Journalism Volume Three: ‘The White Slave’ (1906) By James Cowan Critical Edition Gregory Wood 2019 1 Introduction to the Critical Edition ‘The White Slave’ is firstly the story of a person, and secondly a partial history of the Taranaki Wars. This is the key point of difference between the serial and the later book version which significantly ramps up the historical elements of the story by incorporating the viewpoints of others from both sides. In contrast, ‘The White Slave’ is really a limited viewpoint compared to what is in the nine further chapters of the book version. The absence of those extra chapters in the serial is, I suggest, what makes ’The White Slave’ so much more realistic as an oral testimony, for it does not attempt to fill in the historical gaps that Bent would have not known about. Taranaki war history takes a back seat to the anthropological experience of Bent becoming an ‘outlander’, a ‘decivilised’ man, as Cowan put it in his summary of Bent in the final chapter. For, as mentioned in the thesis, from one angle the text chronicles what happens when a ‘civilised’ man returns to the wilderness to become a hunter-gatherer. What elements of his former civilised world would he miss? Would he survive in the ‘Crusoe’ tradition? Robinson Crusoe (1719) was written by Daniel Defoe and tells the story of a castaway who spends 28 years as a castaway on a remote tropical desert island, encountering cannibals, captives and mutineers before finally being rescued. -

Box 30 368, Lower Hutt Abstract Taranaki, Wanganui and King Country basins (formerly North Wanganui Basin) have been regarded as discrete basins, but they contain a very similar Neogene sedimentary succession and much of their geologi- cal history is held in common. Analysis of the stratigraphic architecture of the fill of each basin reveals the occurrence of four 2nd order megasequences of tectonic origin. The oldest is the early-early Miocene (Otaian Stage) Mahoenui Group/megasequence, followed by the late-early Miocene (Altonian Stage) Mokau Group/megasequence (King Country Basin), both of which correspond to the lower part of the Manganui Formation in Taranaki Basin. The third is the middle to late Miocene Whangamomona Group/megasequence, and the fourth is the latest Miocene-Pleistocene Rangitikei Supergroup/megasequence, both represented in the three basins. Higher order sequences (4th, 5th, 6th), having a eustatic origin, are evident in the Whangamomona and Rangitikei megasequences, particularly those of 5th order with 41 ka periodicity. The distribution of the megasequences are shown in a series of cross-section panels built-up from well -to-well correlations, complemented by time-stratigraphic cross-sections.
