INNOVATIONS IN MARKETING STRATEGIES OF NEWS PAPER INDUSTRY IN INDIA - A CASE STUDY OF TIMES OF INDIA GROUP Dr M. K. Sridhar t A. R. Sainath t Newspapers have become products like any other consumer, industrial or service products. They have unique features which other products do not have. The newspaper industry in India is witnessing intense competition from within and from outside like electronic and internet media. This has tremendous bearing on circulation and advertisement revenues. The industry has responded proactively to these challenges. There is more and more focus on marketing and innovations in marketing strategies. Reviews of some of these strategies are focused in the paper. The authors have presented a case study of TIMES OF INDIA GROUP for innovations in marketing strategies, which are product, price, promotion and distribution related. A survey has been conducted by the authors on a recent innovation in marketing strategy of TRIMMING and SLIMMING the size of the newspaper. The data collected from 357 readers of Bangalore are analysed. The readers in general are not only positive to these changes but also have observed them keenly. Such understanding of sensitivity of readers is crucial for the success of marketing strategies. Twelve online English newspapers published daily in India were selected for the study. The study used website content analysis to assess the contents and design of these newspapers. A checklist was developed as the main tool for data collection and Microsoft Excel was used as the tool for data analysis. The study shows that online English newspapers in India have a common pattern of contents, coverage, and design. Contents availability and access to the contents are the most prevalent options in these newspapers. Majority of the newspapers use Blog, RSS and Facebook to connect with their readers. Media History Monographs 16:2 (2013-2014) ISSN 1940-8862 Speculating “National”: Ownership and Transformation of the English- Language Press in India During the Collapse of the British Raj Deeptanil Ray Jadavpur University ABSTRACT The imminent collapse of the British Raj in India following the Second World War marked the formal entry of Indian big business speculators into the English-language newspaper business. It was more than a transfer of ownership from British to Indian hands: it merged the Indian speculators’ cravings for respectability, their becoming editor-proprietors of newspapers published in the colonial language of power, with a desire to expand the frontiers of what essentially were city-based dailies. Recording its disaffection with the overtly nationalist histories of the Indian press, this article outlines the historical circumstances in which the newspaper business in India functioned prior to the entry of the Indian big business speculators.
